Marvel Has Finally Promised To Fix A Four-Year-Old Character Insult

Summary
  • Captain America's lack of presence in recent Marvel content has been a major insult to the character, but upcoming projects will rectify this after four years.
  • Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, will have prominent roles in the upcoming Captain America film and What If...? season 3, indicating a shift in focus back to the character after four years on the sidelines.
  • In addition to these appearances, Sam Wilson is expected to play a significant role in two Avengers movies in Phase 6, signifying at least four years of prominence for the character.
A recent update surrounding an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe show proves that the franchise will rectify a character insult that has lasted four years. Since Avengers: Endgame, many would agree that the MCU's biggest problem has been its lack of focus. The franchise's expanded list of upcoming Marvel movies combined with other theatrical releases since 2019 and the MCU's Disney+ shows has caused an exponential increase in new characters and storylines.
While the Marvel movies releasing in 2024 promise to rectify this with only Deadpool 3 set to release, the increase in MCU characters has meant some of the franchise's more important figures have been sidelined. When watching the Marvel movies in order of release, there are several characters who have been teased or introduced that are yet to appear again after years in limbo. One of the characters in question is a major insult from Marvel Studios, though this issue seems to be being rectified by the promises of an upcoming MCU TV show and film.
What If…? Season 3 & Captain America 4 Will Bring Sam Wilson Back After 4 Years The character who has been somewhat insulted by Marvel Studios is Sam Wilson/Captain America. The last appearance of Captain America came in 2021 with Anthony Mackie headlining a Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Sam Wilson also had a brief role in What If...? season 1 as a zombie version of Falcon, though Captain America has been reduced to throwaway mentions and references in the MCU since 2021.
However, this insult will finally change in 2025 - four years after his last appearance - with the promise of Sam Wilson's role in two MCU projects. The first is Captain America: Brave New World, the fourth film in the series that will see Anthony Mackie reprise his role as the titular character in his first solo feature film. The second is What If...? season 3 with Marvel's recent update about the animated show confirming an appearance for Captain America.
Marvel’s Other Confirmed Phase 6 Projects Promise More Sam Wilson In The Future While Sam Wilson's two appearances in 2025 are welcomed, what makes this better is the promise of even more roles for the character beyond those. It is expected that Captain America will play a prevalent role in the two Avengers movies confirmed for Phase 6. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are expected to be released in 2026 and 2027 respectively with both presenting a major role for Captain America as the New Avengers' leader.
This would mean that Sam Wilson has four consecutive years in which he has MCU roles, not accounting for any other appearances or cameos that could be provided. This would go a long way to fixing the mistake of sidelining the character for four years after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as many would agree Captain America should be a central figure in the MCU. With the two confirmed 2025 appearances in mind alongside the potential roles in 2026 and 2027, Captain America's biggest MCU insult may finally be a thing of the past.
