- The new suit in Captain America 4 undermines the impactful storyline of Sam Wilson's journey to becoming Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
- The trend of suit changes in the MCU raises concerns that Spider-Man's No Way Home suit may also be replaced in future appearances, prioritizing merchandising and toy sales over character development.
Captain America is next set for an appearance in
Captain America: Brave New World, a film that seems set on continuing a frustrating MCU trend. Originally, Captain America: Brave New World was scheduled to be one of the Marvel movies released in 2024. However, delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in 2023 saw the film pushed back to 2025 meaning it will be four years since Anthony Mackie's Captain America was last seen in the franchise.
Despite this long wait to see Captain America's MCU story continue, the character is expected to play a vital role in the upcoming MCU movies of Phases 5 and 6. As such an important part of the franchise's future, excitement for Captain America: Brave New World is only growing, especially in light of new teases and first looks of the movie being revealed. That said, one of these insights into Captain America: Brave New World's story has highlighted the fact that Marvel Studios seems content to continue a disappointing trend regarding MCU heroes of late.

The disappointing MCU trend in question is that Captain America 4 has redesigned Sam Wilson's suit. An original post from DisTrackers on Instagram highlighted some merchandising material for the 2025 film which featured Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson in a new-look Captain America costume. This is one of the more frustrating aspects of the MCU as the franchise constantly puts its heroes in redesigned suits with every new appearance from characters like Steve Rogers and Thor to more recent mainstays like Ms. Marvel and Ant-Man.
This begs the question of why this is the case. The reality is that
Marvel Studios and Disney are required to sell merchandising and toys for each project, meaning constant redesigns of supersuits allow for more toys and merch to be crafted. If the superheroes of the MCU wore the same suit in every new project, the line of merchandising released by Disney/Marvel would become stale quickly, likely resulting in fewer sales. Therefore, Captain America is the latest superhero to receive a new suit in the MCU which will be highlighted in Captain America: Brave New World.
Captain America’s New Suit Ruins Falcon & The Winter Soldier’s Best Storyline
Regrettably,
Captain America: Brave New World giving Sam Wilson a new suit actively negates one of the character's best MCU storylines. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson's arc centered on his hesitancy to take on the Captain America mantle from Steve Rogers. From the inner turmoil of a black American representing a country where not everyone sees him as equal to the worries that he cannot live up to Steve's legacy, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier offered a thought-provoking, deeply affecting character arc for Sam.
Eventually, Sam realized that he did exemplify everything Captain America should be. In the final episode of the series, Sam embraced this by donning his new Captain America suit and stopping the attacks of the Flag Smashers. Given the long, intense, meaningful journey that he embarked on throughout the show,
Sam's suit-up moment as Captain America was immensely satisfying and made the impact of his new Cap suit hit even harder. Unfortunately, replacing this suit for Captain America 4 after it was seen in only one episode nullifies the impact of Sam’s story in favor of merchandising and toy sales.
Captain America 4’s New Suit Bodes Ill For Another MCU Hero
Sam Wilson's Cap suit in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - a suit that holds such thematic importance - being replaced by another suit in Captain America 4 bodes ill for another MCU hero. The hero in question is Spider-Man who was most recently seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The MCU's Spidey is another character who often receives new suits, often wearing multiple in only one movie. That said,
No Way Home ended with perhaps the best live-action Spider-Man suit ever crafted which had a similar, albeit less meaningful than Sam's, thematic importance to the character.
After being inspired by meeting the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield versions of Spider-Man, the MCU's Peter Parker crafted a classic Spidey suit on his own without the use of Stark Tech or the Avengers' help now that everyone had forgotten him. This solidified the fact that the entire MCU Spider-Man trilogy was one, giant origin story for the character.
Nothing typified this more than Spider-Man's new MCU suit, which many hoped would be a sticking point for the character going forward.
Spider-Man 4 is yet to be officially confirmed, yet Sony and Marvel are reportedly in the midst of ironing out a continuation for the MCU's Web-Slinger.
Unfortunately, it is looking evermore likely that this suit will be replaced in Spider-Man's next MCU appearance. Recent MCU character trends alone are enough to prove this, yet the replacement of a suit as meaningful as Captain America's from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier all but puts it beyond doubt. While
Captain America: Brave New World will, hopefully, be a strong solo outing for Sam Wilson, it is unfortunate that it must continue a trend that seems driven solely by corporate profits.
