Avengers: Secret Wars has the opportunity to bring back some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most missed and underused characters, possibly resulting in an even bigger blockbuster event than Avengers: Endgame. Not slated to release until 2027, what scant details that are known about Avengers: Secret Wars suggest the film will adapt the Marvel comic event of the same name. The original Secret Wars saw the introduction of an all-powerful cosmic being, The Beyonder, pitting heroes and villains against each other within the confines of the alien planet, Battleworld.
In the comics, The Beyonder uses his staggering power to bring together heroes and villains from far and wide in order to watch them duke it out, with the ultimate prize being the ability for the winners to make wishes at the Beyonder's behest. It's unclear if the MCU will utilize the Beyonder, perhaps instead centering the conflict around a cataclysmic collision of universes orchestrated by Kang. Either way, the plot promises the ability for Marvel to recycle dormant characters whose return has been hotly anticipated, perhaps creating the franchise's single biggest event yet.
9 Ulysses Klaue Andy Serkis' delightful villain performance deserves a second chance The Marvel Cinematic Universe has long had a problem with maintaining threatening villains, with many of the franchise's antagonists either being underdeveloped or killed off far too soon. While Ulysses Klaue may have been overshadowed in Black Panther by Michael B. Jordan's excellent performance as Eric Killmonger, he was an endlessly watchable scenery-chewing villain who deserved more screen time. Considering the comics' character he was based off of, Klaw, has a strangely high profile in the original Secret Wars run, it might behoove the MCU to bring Klaue back.
8 Ronan The Accuser Secret Wars' off-world setting could spell the return of the Kree warlord An extremely dangerous villain in the comics, Ronan the Accuser was slain all too soon in his first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, suffering a humiliating defeat after being distracted by Star-Lord's dance skills. Ronan's overall lack of personality and punchline of a loss to the Guardians didn't do his comic counterpart justice. Considering Avengers: Secret Wars is likely to bring the Avengers back into space once more, there might not be a better time to redeem Ronan as a genuine threat.
7 Quicksilver Pietro deserved better than he got in Age of Ultron Close There was a point in time in which Quicksilver's cameo in WandaVision was prophesied to usher the X-Men into the MCU, bridging the gap between universes. Now that the X-Men have officially entered the MCU without his help, Quicksilver deserves some redemption in the MCU, especially Aaron Taylor-Johnson's version, which didn't get much of a chance to shine as a hero before being unceremoniously gunned down by Ultron's drones. It could be interesting to see Pietro's reaction to what became of his sister, and how he would interact with the Avengers once again ten years later.
6 The Mandarin Wenwu's redemption arc is worth re-examining Another of Marvel Comics' most intimidating villains that was erroneously introduced and killed off within the space of a single movie, The Mandarin's return could go in many different interesting directions. His redemption at the end of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings could be followed through, interacting with the new iteration of the Avengers who may be weary to accept his help. What could be more fascinating would be watching him fall back into his old villainous habits thanks to the influence of other antagonists like Kang in Battleworld.
5 Scarlet Witch Considering Wanda wasn't technically defeated, her return could be the most threatening Scarlet Witch's arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely been open and shut, going from villain to hero to villain again before ultimately making a change of heart, redeeming herself via sacrifice. What's important to note, however, is the fact that Wanda Maximoff wasn't technically defeated -- She made the choice to defy her own destiny as the Scarlet Witch. Because of this, her return as the only villain in MCU to technically never be defeated could make her return the biggest threat for the new Avengers to contend with.
4 Dormammu Bargaining might not help against the cosmic conqueror With only one small appearance in the first Doctor Strange, Dormammu is one of the most powerful remaining villains in the MCU yet to make a return after being teased, still presumably held within the Dark Dimension. The introduction of his niece, Clea, in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness suggests the ancient entity could still be looming on the horizon, and his return in Avengers: Secret Wars would be sure to turn heads. Dormammu could take Galactus' role in the original Secret Wars comic, should the franchise not want to introduce the world devourer too quickly.
3 Ultron The MCU's single most underused villain deserves a dangerous return Close Ever since his anticlimactic end in his titular film Avengers: Age of Ultron, even staunch MCU fans have decried the series' waste of Ultron as an overarching villain, mourning the untimely death of the robot overlord. What If...? proved just how great of a threat Ultron could be if allowed to develop, and James Spader's excellent performance as the megalomaniac automaton deserves to bring the same energy to the live-action films. The Secret Wars comic featured Ultron heavily, and considering the multitude of ways to explain his return as a sentient A.I., re-introducing Ultron seems like a no-brainer.
2 Steve Rogers Time travel shenanigans could excuse Captain America's reappearance The torch of Captain America may have been definitively passed to Sam Wilson, but there's no denying that the return of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers would do numbers for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the character isn't currently dead, his old age is far from suited for the heroics Avengers: Secret Wars would require. Instead, his presence could be justified as a stop along his time-traveling journey to return the stolen Infinity Stones to their rightful place in the cosmos, giving the character one last hurrah before being officially retired.
1 Iron Man If Marvel can pull it off, the return of their flagship character would be truly epic Close The return of Robert Downy Jr.'s Iron Man has been a hotly debated rumor plaguing the MCU in the wake of their recent underwhelming year. Iron Man's sendoff in Avengers: Endgame was an incredibly poignant end to both the actor and the character's arc through the series, and risking undoing all that with an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars would be a big gamble. But if the MCU could find a way to pull off a re-appearance of Iron Man respectfully, it would undoubtedly be a bigger event than even Avengers: Endgame.
