Marvel just recently gave the first look at the upcoming X-Men '97 Disney+ series with a short trailer packed full of reveals and teases. The original X-Men: The Animated Series is a beloved Marvel animation project from the early 90s, and anticipation has been high for its upcoming sequel. While individual stills and some brief plot synopses have previously been shown, the debut trailer is the first time the X-Men's newest adventure has been seen in motion.
The trailer confirms that the show will be picking up where the original X-Men series ended, shortly after the death of X-Men leader Charles Xavier. However, it also gives some interesting clues about what can be expected from characters like Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean Grey. While details are still largely under wraps for X-Men '97, things are slowly starting to fall into place.

The only way to save him was to send him off into space with Empress Lilandra of the Shi'Ar Empire. The opening to the X-Men '97 trailer shows clips from this original ending, but the trailer also implies that Xavier may have died between then and when the show picks up.
The biggest hint at the fate of Professor X comes from the appearance of his last will and testament. Whether Charles is actually dead or just presumed to be isn't shown, but what is shown is the shocking contents of his will. Xavier apparently left everything to Magneto. This promises to upset the status quo of the series in a major way, and it will be interesting to see if Xavier ever returns and what Magneto will do in the meantime.
9 X-Men '97 Will Have Some Ties To The Wider Marvel Universe Spider-Man Is Referenced In The X-Men '97 Trailer In a quick shot from the trailer, a copy of the Daily Bugle floats in front of the screen. Though the main headline is about a mutant fashion show, some of the smaller details confirm that Spider-Man exists in the world of the series. The top left of the paper reads "Is Spider-Man A Mutant?" and the top right credits some photos to Peter Parker.
When the show was originally airing, it would sometimes cross over with Spider-Man: The Animated Series as well. This newspaper could just be an Easter egg or may hint at a possible appearance by Spider-Man in X-Men '97. Either way, it confirms that more Marvel heroes still exist in the show's reality.
8 X-Men '97 Is Keeping The Original Series' Iconic Theme Song X-Men: The Animated Series' Theme Song Appears In The Trailer Near the end of the trailer, the X-Men '97 logo appears, accompanied by a riff from the original X-Men theme song. The theme song from the original series was iconic, so it is good to hear that Marvel will be keeping it around for X-Men '97. This will help make the show feel like one cohesive narrative despite being made so many years apart.
7 Jean Grey Is Pregnant Jean Grey Has Never Been Pregnant In Marvel Comics Jean Grey being pregnant isn't just new for the X-Men cartoon but also for the wider Marvel world. The main-universe Jean has never had any biological children in the comics, which means this is brand-new territory for the character in the show. If Jean gives birth at some point during X-Men '97, this could mean the introduction of a new character to the world of X-Men who has no previous history in the comics.

6 Marvel Has A New "Marvel Animation" Banner X-Men '97 Will Be The First Show With The New Banner Marvel Studios recently created the Marvel Spotlight banner for MCU content that works without much knowledge of the wider MCU. Now, Marvel has created a Marvel Animation banner as well. Though X-Men '97 isn't the first animated show Marvel has made, it is the first one to have this banner. Inventing a new logo specifically for animated projects could imply that Marvel is preparing to release more animated content in the near future. Perhaps other shows like Spider-Man: The Animated Series could be given the same revival treatment.
5 The Hellfire Gala Exists In X-Men '97 The Hellfire Gala Is An Annual Marvel Comics Event The copy of the Daily Bugle in the X-Men '97 trailer had a lot of reveals for its short time on screen. The top right side of the newspaper mentions the Hellfire Gala, an event that takes place in Marvel Comics, but is far too recent of an event to have appeared in the original show. The Gala is an annual event in the comics that often signals some big changes coming across all the X-Men books.
The Hellfire Gala takes place on the island of Krakoa, a living island which has become an independent nation for mutants in the comics. Each year, Krakoa allows non-mutants to come visit and experience mutant culture via the Hellfire Gala. It is unclear yet if the Gala will happen in X-Men '97 or if this is simply a reference for comic book fans to catch.
4 Cyclops Is Filling The Role Of Professor X Professor X Was Usually The Leader In X-Men: The Animated Series Whether Charles Xavier is dead or still in space, the X-Men '97 trailer makes it clear that he is not around for at least part of the show. In his absence, it seems that Cyclops has stepped up to take his place. Though Cyclops has always been a leader of the team, the trailer shows him saying Professor X's classic line: "To me, my X-men." This would imply that Scott Summers will be taking on more of Xavier's responsibilities now that he is gone.
Related 12 X-Men Fox Failed That Marvel Can Finally Fix In The MCU Mutants have started to arrive in the MCU, teasing the debut of the X-Men, which gives Marvel Studios the chance to redeem several wasted Fox heroes. 3 The Updated Animation Preserves The Original X-Men Feel X-Men '97's Animation Is Slightly Updated From The Original Close X-Men: The Animated Series did a great job mimicking the look of its characters from the comic book that came on screen. The characters have similar linework to a comic book, and the colors are bright and vibrant. Though X-Men '97's animation is updated in some ways from the original series, it has done a good job preserving the feeling of the original show. Similar to keeping the same theme song, keeping the visuals mostly consistent will help make the show truly feel like a continuation as opposed to its own new thing.
2 Several Veteran Voice Actors Are Joined By Franchise Newcomers The X-Men '97 voice cast is made up of an interesting mix of returning talent from the original series and franchise newcomers. While much of the cast was already announced before the trailer, hearing the voices makes clear how everyone in the series will sound. While there are still some unknowns, actors for Wolverine, Rogue, Beast, Mister Sinister, and Storm are the same, while new talents lend their voices to Jean Grey, Jubilee, Gambit, and Magneto.
1 Magneto Has A New Look In X-Men '97 Magneto looks slightly different in the trailer for X-Men '97 than he had previously in the original series. His muscular build is a little less exaggerated than it was in the previous incarnation, perhaps implying that Magneto might not be fighting as much as he used to now that he's aging. His slimmer build and wearing a suit instead of his normal costume may imply that he is planning to try and take over for Professor X now that he has inherited all of Charles' things. This may set up an interesting conflict between him and Cyclops in X-Men '97.
