Summary
- Hulk's lack of a solo film in the MCU is a business decision, but it's actually the right choice for the character's development.
- Universal Pictures still holds distribution rights for a Hulk solo film, making it unlikely for Marvel to pursue one.
- The Hulk works best as a supporting character in the MCU, helping to tie together different generations of films and boosting other characters' stories.
Hulk will never get a solo film in the MCU franchise, but that may actually be a blessing in disguise for the character. Bruce Banner made his MCU debut in 2008 with The Incredible Hulk, where he was played by Edward Norton. In the character’s next MCU appearance in The Avengers, Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. Though Ruffalo has gone on to play the Hulk in various projects since then, the Hulk has never gotten a second MCU solo film, and it doesn't seem likely any time soon.
Although the lack of Hulk solo MCU stories is more of a business decision rather than a creative one, it is actually the right choice for the character. Bruce Banner is way past the point of needing a solo film, especially this far into the Multiverse Saga. Even though he’s the only original Avenger who doesn’t have any solo projects, he is one of the MCU characters that has received the most consistent development. The Hulk has been making do with MCU supporting roles, and continuing on this path is what’s best for this character regardless of behind-the-scenes production factors.

Bruce Banner has had a restricted role in the MCU because of the complicated Hulk movie and character rights. The Incredible Hulk was released before Marvel was purchased by Disney, and the film was originally distributed by Universal Pictures. While Marvel still has rights over the character and is technically allowed to make a Hulk solo film, Universal would get first refusal for any project. Any Marvel film with Hulk as the main character would allow Universal to split the box office profits, which is likely why Marvel Studios has strayed away from making a solo Hulk film.
It's possible that the Hulk's rights reverted back to Disney last year, but no comment one way or the other has been officially made, and the rhetoric around a Hulk solo movie seems to imply Universal still holds the rights.
The studio has doubled down on the Hulk’s solo film potential with Ruffalo recently commenting on the situation at his Santa Barbara International Film Festival panel. Ruffalo said that Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige confirmed to him that
Hulk will never get a standalone film, and the character’s development would instead be sprinkled in as subplots in future MCU projects. While this information is nothing new, Ruffalo’s recent comments may finally put the rumors of a solo Hulk project to rest.
Yeah. Kevin [Feige] was like, 'What would you like to do?' And he said, 'What would you do if you had a standalone Hulk movie?' I said, 'Well, I'd like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character.' And he's like, 'Okay. We'll do that over the course of four movies. We'll never give you a standalone Hulk...I don't mean to burst your bubble, but that's just not going to [happen]. So, we'll do it over four movies, how does that sound?'
The MCU Needs Hulk As A Supporting Character Close Ruffalo has proven that he can embody Bruce Banner and his inner turmoil with his Hulk persona. While the actor is undoubtedly charismatic enough to carry a solo project, the Hulk actually works best in the MCU as a supporting character. The MCU moved into a new era with the Multiverse Saga and with that comes a plethora of new characters introduced. There’s not much tying the original generation of MCU films to the new ones, and the consistent appearance of the Hulk in various projects is the throughline that the franchise needs to feel coherent.
Even without a solo film, Ruffalo has had plenty of MCU appearances at this point, such as supporting roles in Thor: Ragnarok and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Bruce is always given the opportunity to riff off of another character in each of his appearances, whether it be a colleague like Thor or his family like Jennifer Walters.
Bruce’s character shines when playing off of another’s presence, and the Hulk is one MCU character that can effectively grow while also boosting other characters’ stories. Considering that Marvel has no other choice regardless, they should take advantage of having such a character.
It’s Too Late For A Hulk Solo Film
Even if Marvel decided that they wanted to go ahead with a solo Hulk project, it is simply too late in the MCU for the film. The character has already had so many appearances and subtle character development that a solo Hulk film would just be more of the same. Marvel should take note of Black Widow, as there was demand for a solo project, but the mistiming of its release in the greater franchise watered down the interest. Especially now that the MCU has moved on to the Multiverse Saga, the
Hulk just doesn’t warrant his own film.
Related 10 Great Hulk Theories That Completely Change The MCU's Most Complex Avenger Hulk is one of the MCU's most iconic and beloved Avengers, but several interesting theories shift the perspective on the particularly complex hero. Marvel’s direction with the Hulk in the MCU has always been up in the air because of the complicated distribution rights. With Ruffalo’s recent comments about the character, it seems like a Hulk solo film is officially dead. However, this path is actually a good one for Bruce Banner as he works best in a supporting role when playing off of other characters. Instead of trying to pave a future where the
Hulk gets a mistimed solo film, Marvel Studios is better off having the character consistently appear in smaller roles over several projects.
