Marvel"s X-Men Reboot Brings Major Element To The MCU The Avengers Have Been Missing For 12 Years

Summary
  • X-Men '97 showcases the X-Men's superior teamwork compared to the Avengers, thanks to their close-knit living arrangements and well-trained abilities.
  • The Avengers' lack of unity has been a significant problem in the MCU, as their disorganization in previous films led to a cataclysmic defeat.
  • With the new threat of Kang the Conqueror approaching, the Avengers' absence since Avengers: Endgame raises concerns for the future of the MCU's heroes.
X-Men '97 will mark the X-Men's MCU debut when it releases on March 20, and their arrival will finally bring an element that the Avengers have been missing throughout their 12-year career. Since banding together for the first time in 2012, the Avengers have appeared together in three more movies, with their most recent outing in Avengers: Endgame bringing the arcs of two of the team's most prominent members to a close. It has now been nearly five years since the MCU's protagonists teamed up, but a brand-new team is en route.
X-Men '97 is set to continue the story of 1992's X-Men: The Animated Series, which ended in 1997 with the ambiguous death of Charles Xavier. The series came to define the X-Men for a generation, helping to spur the success of Fox's live-action franchise that launched with X-Men just three years later. Now that Marvel has regained the cinematic rights to the team, X-Men '97 will precede their feature-length MCU arrival by several years - and with them comes a lesson in teamwork.
Related 10 Biggest Reveals From Marvel's X-Men '97 TV Show Trailer The trailer for the new X-Men '97 series is brief, but it reveals plenty of exciting details about the Disney+ show's story and characters. X-Men '97 Shows The X-Men Work As A Team Better Than The Avengers Aside from their mind-bending mutations, the X-Men are defined by their capacity for teamwork, the likes of which blow the Avengers out of the water. This isn't too surprising, given that the X-Men live together inside the X-Mansion, while the Avengers - as indicated by their solo movies - tend to live their lives separately from the rest of the team. Additionally, the X-Men are particularly well-trained, utilizing the Danger Room to synergize their unique set of powers. The Avengers, meanwhile, tend to approach large-scale battles by doing their own respective things, outside a few instances.
The trailer for X-Men '97, seen below, shows how the X-Men's teamwork manifests. Gambit charges Wolverine's claws with kinetic energy while Storm and Rogue drop their non-flying teammates onto the battlefield. Cyclops, meanwhile, whose leadership role is far more evident in this series than in Fox's X-Men franchise, hammers home the fact that they are a close-knit team with his lines: "We get this done by working together as a team," and "To me my X-Men!" While the Avengers aren't devoid of combos, the fact that the team only gets together occasionally works against them.

Why The Avengers' Lack Of Unity Has Been Such A Big Problem In The MCU The Avengers arguably had their own X-Mansion in the form of Avengers Tower and the Avengers Compound. After Avengers: Endgame, however, the compound has been destroyed and the Avengers Tower has been sold to some as-yet-unknown entity. Since then, the new members of the Avengers haven't fought together outside The Marvels, which presumably means the team is more disjointed than ever. With the looming threat of Kang the Conqueror on the horizon, this doesn't bode well.
This is especially concerning given the fact that the last time the Avengers were so disorganized it led to their cataclysmic defeat in Avengers: Infinity War. The schism formed by the events of Captain America: Civil War meant that the team was woefully unprepared to face Thanos before his plan to acquire the Infinity Stones came to fruition. The multiversal threat posed by Kang brings much higher stakes, and the fact that the Avengers have been AWOL since Avengers: Endgame does not bode well for the future of the MCU's inhabitants.
