Captain America 4 Has The Perfect Opportunity To Fix A Major Hulk Complaint

Summary
  • Tim Blake Nelson is returning as Samuel Sterns, a.k.a. the Leader, in Phase 5's upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
  • Captain America: Brave New World could set up a storyline which sees the Leader unleash the savage Hulk again, after years of the Hulk being weakened.
  • Mark Ruffalo is not expected to appear in Captain America: Brave New World, but the project will still explore the Hulk's MCU storyline.
One major complaint aimed at Bruce Banner's Hulk in the MCU could be solved if one Marvel Comics story is adapted for Phase 5's upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Shortly after the finale of 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which saw Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson finally suit up as the MCU's new Captain America, Marvel Studios confirmed that Sam Wilson would be returning in his debut solo movie as the star-spangled man-with-a-plan. Releasing on February 14, 2025, Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World even has the unusual opportunity to develop the story of the MCU's Hulk.
Despite being focused on Sam Wilson's evolution as Captain America, Phase 5's Captain America: Brave New World's cast features several Hulk-related characters. This includes Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross, recast after William Hurt's passing, Liv Tyler's Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns, with Tim Blake Nelson returning from 2008's The Incredible Hulk. At the end of The Incredible Hulk, Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's gamma-irradiated blood, which catalyzed his transformation into the Leader, one of the Hulk's most prominent adversaries in Marvel Comics, and the Leader's return in Captain America: Brave New World could tease a major change for the Hulk.

Release Date February 14, 2025 Studio(s) Marvel Studios Cast Anthony Mackie Related Captain America 4 Repeats 1 Thing No Marvel Movie Has Done In 80 Years Captain America 4 will introduce several big changes to the Captain America series and the MCU, including one tweak that hasn't been done in decades. The Hulk Needs To Turn Savage Again In The MCU Originally portrayed by Edward Norton in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, Mark Ruffalo assumed the role of Bruce Banner from 2012's The Avengers onwards. Ruffalo has now made nine appearances as Bruce Banner's Hulk in the live-action MCU, and has perhaps undergone the biggest transformation of any superhero in the MCU, though these changes haven't always been well-received. 2019's Avengers: Endgame saw Banner unite his human and Hulk personas into one body, Smart Hulk, but this transformation received some criticism, as it took place completely off-screen during the five-year-long Blip, and has significantly weakened the Hulk in the MCU's Multiverse Saga.
Related The MCU Confirmed A Huge Missing Part Of Hulk’s Endgame Story Marvel Studios still hasn't explored a major part of Bruce Banner's story as the MCU's Hulk, but What If...? season 2 may have revealed new details. Although Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner and the Hulk has consistently been praised, many are hoping the Hulk will revert to his original savage state in the MCU's future. With recent speculation that Marvel Studios may be developing an adaptation of Marvel Comics' World War Hulk, this could happen soon, despite there being no official confirmation. The last time the Hulk showed off his savagery was during 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, which saw the Hulk rage through the streets of Johannesburg. Since then, the Hulk has been relatively subdued, but this could change in the MCU's Phase 5.
The Leader Unlocked The Savage Hulk In Marvel Comics Close The introduction of the Leader in Captain America: Brave New World could bring about this next big transformation for Bruce Banner's Hulk, as the supervillain has proven himself capable of unleashing the Hulk at will in the pages of the Marvel Comics source material. Samuel Sterns' Leader debuted in 1964's Tales to Astonish #62, making him one of the Hulk's longest-running and most formidable adversaries. Since he has similar gamma radiation enhancements - though is gifted a superhuman intellect instead of superhuman strength - the Leader knows a great deal about the Hulk, including how to quickly unleash the beast.
During 1970's The Incredible Hulk (Vol. 2) #124, the Leader interrupts the wedding of Bruce Banner and Betty Ross by firing a powerful gamma ray at Banner, causing his transformation into the Hulk. Instead of changing into a somewhat-intelligent Hulk, however, the Hulk reverts to his original brutish state during this transformation, and battles the Rhino, whom the Leader had enhanced. In his savage state, the Hulk destroys General Ross' home, and injures the General, causing public perception of the Hulk to sour again. A story such as this could very easily play out in Captain America: Brave New World.
Captain America 4 Can Set Up The Hulk’s Next Big Transformation Despite so many Hulk-related characters being confirmed to be returning in Captain America: Brave New World, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is not expected to be appearing. This means that this Marvel Comics plot likely won't be explored directly, but it could be set up for the future. Betty Ross' return in Captain America: Brave New World could hint at a reunion between her and Banner, and potentially their future wedding, allowing this story to be explored. The Leader's future after Captain America: Brave New World is unclear, but he could be the key to bringing back the much-wanted savage Hulk.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025, as part of the MCU's Phase 5.
