The Falcon & The Winter Soldier"s Season 2 Teases Make 1 Of Thunderbolt"s Original Planned Deaths Way Less Likely

Summary
  • The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Season 2 teases could mean Bucky survives Thunderbolts where he may not have previously.
  • Reports stated the original plan for Thunderbolts would've killed off the team, preventing The Falcon & The Winter Soldier season 2 from following on after the MCU movie release.
  • However, the MCU going forward with both The Falcon & The Winter Soldier season 2 and potentially killing Bucky off in Thunderbolts would still be possible so long as the Disney+ sequel series was a prequel.
It already looked like the MCU was moving away from their original plan to kill the Thunderbolts, and the potential for a second season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier seems to make it even more likely. Reports that Marvel was originally planning to kill the new super-team off in Marvel's Thunderbolts came only after the plan was seemingly going to change. Marvel has brought on The Bear's showrunner, Joanna Calo, to rewrite Marvel's Thunderbolts, and likely save a few of their lives in the process.
This change to Marvel's Thunderbolts may have been influenced by Disney CEO Bob Iger's plan to refocus Marvel around sequels for existing characters, making exceptions only for big names like The Fantastic Four. Keeping the Thunderbolts alive would mean a potential sequel for the team, or at least not losing some major names from the MCU timeline. Allowing one Thunderbolt specifically to survive would also make sense if Marvel wants The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 to happen.
Related The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: 8 Things You Didn't Know About The Disney+ MCU Series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is littered with interesting facts and production details. But did hardcore fans know them already? Marvel's Thunderbolts Reportedly Had A Grim Ending Originally Planned For Bucky The Original Script For Marvel's Thunderbolts Would Reportedly Have Killed Off The Team Before Marvel scheduled rewrites for Marvel's Thunderbolts, its original ending would likely have included the death of the team, including Bucky Barnes. Bucky has been in the MCU since Phase 1, so it wouldn't be too surprising for Marvel to bring his story to an end. Still, it would have been a shame to kill Bucky off prematurely. This is especially true given where the character was at when he last appeared in the MCU.
In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, season 1, Bucky was finally taking steps to make up for his past as the Winter Soldier. This included making amends with people whose family members he hurt, and practicing restraint while on missions with Sam. As a team-up movie starring mostly anti-heroes and villains, Marvel's Thunderbolts doesn't seem like the best venue for Bucky to finish his redemption arc. While there is a way that Marvel's Thunderbolts could have redeemed Bucky, allowing him to continue his story might be a better way to go.
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Season 2 Teases Support Bucky's Thunderbolts Survival The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Season 2 Was Teased In A Disney Press Release The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Cast Sebastian Stan , Daniel Brühl , Anthony Mackie , Wyatt Russell , Erin Kellyman , Emily VanCamp Release Date March 19, 2021 Seasons 1 Streaming Service(s) Disney+ Showrunner Kari Skogland While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 has not been confirmed yet, a recent Disney press release did make it seem more likely. In it, Disney gave information about the upcoming UHD and Blu-ray releases for several of their shows. Interestingly enough, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was labeled "season 1" whereas the limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi did not have a season number attributed to it. This would suggest that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will return for another season, or at least that the opportunity is being kept open for the time being.
If The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is coming back, then that is good news for Bucky Barnes. Bucky will most likely survive the events of Marvel's Thunderbolts if he is going to star in a Disney+ series that is going to release after it. However, as good as this looks for Bucky, it still isn't an absolute guarantee that he will survive.
Why Bucky Might Still Be In Danger In Marvel's Thunderbolts Marvel Has Released Several Prequel Projects Close Marvel's Thunderbolts
Director Jake Schreier Release Date May 2, 2025 Cast Sebastian Stan , Wyatt Russell , Julia Louis-Dreyfus , Tim Roth , Daniel Brühl , Florence Pugh , David Harbour , Olga Kurylenko , Harrison Ford Franchise(s) Marvel Cinematic Universe It seems unlikely that Marvel would make a show called The Falcon and the Winter Soldier without one of the two titular characters. However, Marvel has shown that they are willing to make projects starring a dead character before. Black Widow starred Scarlet Johansson in the title role, despite her having died in Avengers: Endgame. The movie was a prequel, set before Natasha's death. This isn't Marvel's only prequel film, as Captain Marvel also took place in the past.
If Marvel decides to set The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 before the events of Marvel's Thunderbolts, it's very possible Bucky could still die in his upcoming movie. Hopefully, Marvel's refocus on sequels, and the lackluster reception of Black Widow, convince Marvel to keep Bucky around longer. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 seems like a better way to give Bucky the attention his story deserves, since a team up movie will have to spread its attention thin across all of the members.
