Summary
  • Third time's the charm for Agatha as the show receives another title change, with the newest hinting at a WandaVision connection.
  • Agatha's title changes reflect her manipulative character and adaptability in the MCU.
  • Marvel leans into the iconic "Agatha All Along" moment with a simple, fitting title for the upcoming show.
Marvel Studios has just changed the title of Agatha for the third time, paying off a brilliant joke from WandaVision. The Agatha show's name change will not come as a surprise to fans of the MCU given its history. As one of the many upcoming MCU TV shows, Agatha will continue the storytelling of the franchise's Phase 5. While many were less than enthused about an Agatha Harkness spin-off upon the show's announcement, the concept of a WandaVision continuation through Agatha - and Vision Quest - is promising, to say the least.
Related Why WandaVision Season 2 Will Happen (Just Not How You Think) WandaVision is still one of Marvel's best Disney+ series but hasn't been renewed for Season 2, which may take a surprising form. Agatha's cast of characters will be spearheaded by Kathryn Hahn, returning as the titular witch after the events of WandaVision. Besides this and a few other casting announcements, much of what Agatha will consist of remains a mystery. Fittingly, the marketing for Agatha is as much a mystery as the show itself, with Marvel Studios providing the production with a third name change. Despite the constant alterations of the production's title, the newest title of simply Agatha hearkens back to WandaVision, honoring perhaps the most iconic joke from one of Marvel's best TV shows.
The Agatha TV Show Has Yet Another New Title Agatha has received its third title change since the show's announcement in 2021. Firstly, it is worth exploring the various name changes behind Agatha's production and why each one likely took place. Initially announced as Agatha: House of Harkness, the show's title seemed self-explanatory. With Agatha being the central character of the WandaVision spin-off, the show was bound to explore the house of witches from which she hailed: House Harkness. However, the first change saw the project retitled as Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
Again, this title was logical and essentially just a rewording of House of Harkness. In the MCU, witch magic revolves around the harnessing of chaos, with Agatha's House Harkness serving as the titular Coven of Chaos. Another change was then implemented, with Marvel Studios seemingly settling on Agatha: Darkhold Diaries for the show's official title, hinting that the Darkhold book would have much more of a presence in the project after Agatha was shown to possess it in WandaVision. However, in March 2024, Disney+ listed the TV show as simply Agatha, complete with an updated logo.
Agatha’s Title Changing Links Back To Her WandaVision Introduction WandaVision's iconic Agatha moment fits perfectly with the spin-off's title changes. Close While the constant changing of a show's title could be cause for concern, the new name of Agatha is perfect for one reason. The title alone works, as it is a straightforward, blunt way of letting the audience know the show centers around Agatha. But when combined with the previous titles the show has possessed, the true genius of Agatha comes to the fore as it calls back to her WandaVision introduction.
Rather than be House of Harkness, Coven of Chaos, or Darkhold Diaries, the title of the upcoming MCU show has simply been Agatha all along. In WandaVision episode 7, Agnes reveals herself as Agatha Harkness, the mastermind behind the manipulation of Wanda in the Hex. This revelation is revealed in the form of "Agatha All Along," a song that quickly became iconic to the point of charting on Billboard's Digital Song Sales. With the new title of her own TV show, Marvel is leaning into the famous song by revealing that the title has been Agatha all along.
The callback to "Agatha All Along" could well have been accidental, with no confirmation from Marvel Studios hinting that the title changes were made specifically to reference the iconic WandaVision song.
Agatha’s Title Changes Perfectly Fit Her MCU Character Agatha's personality matches the ever-changing title of her solo MCU show. Even going beyond the genius callback, accidental or not, to WandaVision's "Agatha All Along," the Agatha title changes perfectly fit how her character was depicted in the MCU. Throughout WandaVision, it became clear that Agatha Harkness was a master manipulator via her exploitation of Wanda's sitcom-related Hex. This manipulation of Wanda was enacted through endless planning, changes of tactics, adaptations, and schemes. With these traits being the prominent aspects of Agatha's character, the title changes somewhat match her personality.
Just as Agatha adapted and changed to fit whatever situation she needed to throughout WandaVision, the title of her own show is doing the same. While this may not be an intentional marketing strategy from Marvel Studios and could simply be showrunner Jac Schaeffer deciding that each subsequent change best fits the show's developing production, it still works when placed into comparison with Agatha's character. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether Agatha's story will reflect these changes when the show premieres in late 2024.
