The Marvels Trailer Backlash Proves The MCU Has Already Failed The Captain Marvel Sequel

The Marvels trailer backlash proves that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already failed its Captain Marvel sequel. The Marvels faces the task of living up to the original Captain Marvel, which was released in 2019 to great success, going on to gross over $1.1 billion worldwide. The sequel continues the story of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in the MCU, with the hero now being joined by Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, daughter of Carol's best friend Maria, and with Ms. Marvel's Iman Vellani rounding up The Marvels' cast of heroes.
The Marvels unites three characters who have contributed to Captain Marvel's legacy in the comics, which is an interesting move for the franchise, turning an original solo movie into a team-up sequel, although not the first time an MCU film has made such a move. The Marvels' first trailer has shown what kind of trouble its trio of leads will deal with in the sequel, but it appears that The Marvels' biggest battle will be offscreen. While Captain Marvel encountered commercial success, the movie also had to deal with great toxicity from online users, and, sadly, The Marvels will apparently have to deal with the same issue.
The Marvels Trailer Backlash Explained The Marvels' early backlash comes from the movie earning a very negative record. The Marvel's trailer is the most disliked MCU trailer on YouTube. In total numbers, The Marvels' trailer does not have the biggest dislike count of the MCU on YouTube, with that mark going to the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which got a whooping 554,000 dislikes. What makes The Marvels the most disliked MCU trailer on YouTube is the difference between its like and dislike counts. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law had a positive count due to its 786,000 likes, while The Marvels has received 468,000 dislikes against 444,000 likes so far.
Captain Marvel & Brie Larson Received Backlash In 2019 Sadly, this amount of internet hate is not new to the Captain Marvel franchise or its lead star. Back in 2019, the original Captain Marvel saw an unprecedented amount of toxicity due to the movie being the first MCU entry to focus on a female lead. Larson had to deal with many unsavory comments that did not stop throughout Captain Marvel's entire theatrical run, with her character being commonly referred to as a "Mary Sue" simply for being powerful and having a cocky attitude, the latter of which was never a problem for Robert Downey Jr.'s popularity as Iron Man.
What makes The Marvels' situation potentially worse than that of Captain Marvel is the current state of the MCU. Marvel has just come out of an underperforming Phase 4, which is widely regarded by both critics and fans as the MCU's most flawed phase so far. Phase 5 was supposed to course-correct the MCU; however, its first release — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — introduced the MCU's new main villain, Kang the Conqueror, to lackluster results.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania earned some of the worst critic reviews in the MCU, with the universe's uneven VFX trend manifesting itself again in the film, and has become the lowest-performing Ant-Man movie at the box office. With the MCU currently in disarray, the internet trolls that showed up to criticize Captain Marvel could use the argument of Marvel's current issues to validate their hate toward the female-led franchise, with The Marvels' first trailer showing signs of a new hate campaign brewing.
How Marvel Studios Can Fight Against The Marvels Backlash Marvel Studios needs to protect The Marvels' stars from what may be another hate campaign directed toward the franchise. It is possible that the current state of the MCU could aggravate the situation for the movie's leads, with the original Captain Marvel trailer earning 1.1 million likes against 106,000 dislikes, a far cry from The Marvels' current situation. Marvel Studios has to step up and be vocal about the issue. The Marvels' stars deserve better support from the MCU than what Larson got during Captain Marvel's theatrical run.
While many MCU stars banded together to defend Chris Pratt from a "Who's the worst Chris?" trend on social media in the past, that same energy was not present for Larson. Some MCU stars like War Machine actor Don Cheadle and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Clark Gregg defended Larson from the attacks, but The Marvel's cast deserves more. Hopefully, not only will MCU talent rise to defend The Marvels' trio of leads from unjustified hate, but Marvel Studios itself will have learned a lesson from the Captain Marvel situation and will publicly rally against the hate campaign that is forming against The Marvels.
