The trailer for 2023's The Marvels might have accidentally spoiled the events of Nick Fury's upcoming Secret Invasion series on Disney+. 2023 is a big year for Samuel L. Jackson, as the Hollywood star is set to be featured in two separate projects in the MCU's Phase 5. Secret Invasion will release in June and will pit Jackson's Nick Fury against a rebel faction of shapeshifting Skrulls on Earth, while The Marvels, scheduled for release in November, will see Fury back in business aboard the mysterious SABER Space Station. New details about The Marvels, however, might have already ruined the ending of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion series.
Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for The Marvels on April 11, 2023, revealing more about the storyline and characters for the upcoming Phase 5 project. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani will be joined by Samuel L. Jackson in their debut cosmic adventure as a team, with the latter seemingly providing background support just as he has previously done for the MCU's original Avengers team.
This has led to some confusion, however, as recent trailers for Secret Invasion caused many to speculate that the former Director of SHIELD would meet his demise in the crossover miniseries. Nick Fury's appearance in The Marvels seems to suggest otherwise.
Nick Fury's The Marvels Role Means He Survives Secret Invasion

The trailers for Secret Invasion have put a lot of emphasis on the grittiness of the upcoming series, acting as a departure from Marvel Studios' more light-hearted recent projects and perhaps feeling more like the spy thriller nature of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Fury's relationship to the Skrulls started in the 1990s, as demonstrated in Captain Marvel, but it seems this alliance has soured over the years. With formidable rebel Skrulls leading an uprising in Secret Invasion, it was speculated that Fury would finally meet his end; however, since The Marvels releases after Secret Invasion, his appearance in the Captain Marvel sequel suggests he will survive his solo series.
How Nick Fury Could Still Die In Secret Invasion

The notion that Nick Fury would die in Secret Invasion has been a popular opinion, particularly after the trailers for the upcoming series were released. Scenes from the trailers show Fury no longer as the tough and steadfast character audiences know and love, but one skulking in the shadows and even neglecting to sport his trademark eye patch. At one point, Fury even visits his own gravestone, potentially foreshadowing a death during the series, and this could still happen despite his appearance in The Marvels in November.
It's possible that the MCU's Phase 5 is releasing out of chronological order, which could allow The Marvels to take place before Secret Invasion in Marvel Studios' timeline. This would explain Fury's cleaner appearance and residence on the SABER Space Station. Even if the projects are released in chronological order, it's possible that Fury could die in Secret Invasion and be replaced by a Skrull, or potentially even a Life Model Decoy, as he has been known to use these replacements frequently in Marvel Comics. This would mean the Fury featured in The Marvels isn't actually Fury at all, which would make for some intriguing storylines in the MCU's future.
