Director Zack Snyder has opened up about how Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver's last supper scene was originally made for his cancelled
Justice League 2 movie. Prior to the massive battle that takes place between the warriors on Veldt and the Imperium, the movie's core characters have a discussion about what influenced their fight against the villainous group. This leads to a series of flashbacks where the character's backstories are fleshed out more thoroughly.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder revealed how
the last supper scene in Rebel Moon - Part Two was first created for his original Justice League 2 plans. The director revealed how the sequence was initially written for the core heroes of the DCU to catch up after a major time jump, but was repurposed for his sci-fi action film. Check out what Snyder had to say below:
There absolutely is a Last Supper in Justice League 2, and the scene had them telling the stories of how they got there, because Justice League 2 was going to open with us now 10 years in the future. And yes, [Rebel Moon — Part Two’s sequence] has a similar sort of structure to the Justice League 2 scene that we have.
How Much Was Rebel Moon Inspired By Snyder’s Justice League 2 Plans? Close The last supper discussion that happens between the core warriors in Rebel Moon - Part Two offered them much-needed character development, giving the team members and their motivations more depth. If this scene had been applied to a Justice League sequel,
it would have helped set up Snyder’s planned conflict for the movie. This would seemingly include Darkseid as a major antagonist, set up at the end of Justice League and the next step in the DCEU's original plan.
Beyond this important scene for character growth, it's unclear how much of Snyder's new franchise was directly inspired by the shelved plans for Snyder's DC superhero sequel.
Both movies share a core concept, with a group of characters – each wielding their own strengths – facing off against a much larger threat whose goals could result in the end of a world. Given Rebel Moon's overwhelmingly negative reviews and a structure that didn't help develop its characters throughout the film, it seems the movie went in its own direction instead of pulling major inspiration from Justice League 2 plans.
However, the last supper scene was a core part of revealing more about Rebel Moon's world and characters, showing how the same concept could have been mirrored in
Justice League 2. In the possible superhero film, though,
it would have been done with characters established and developed in the first four-hour movie. This would have made the scene automatically stronger because of the familiar faces it would have involved, making it clear why the scene would have been so important in the cancelled superhero movie.
Snyder's current focus is on the Rebel Moon franchise, wherein he hopes to make four more movies in the series.
