The Marvels has hit a new low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new movie, which is the third feature in Phase 5 of the MCU, is a direct sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, which introduced Brie Larson's former fighter pilot turned superhero Carol Danvers to the franchise. The sequel sees Captain Marvel having her powers entangled with Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), forcing the trio to work together as a team when a dangerous threat arrives on the scene.
Per Deadline, the official results are in for the The Marvels box office in its opening weekend. Its 3-day domestic total has hit the lower end of its original projections, raking in $47 million that contributes to an accumulated worldwide opening of $110 million. Both domestically and worldwide, that is officially the worst opening weekend for any MCU movie ever, and the lowest since the second-ever MCU movie The Incredible Hulk opened to $55.4 million domestic in 2008.
How The Marvels Worldwide Opening Compares To The Rest of The MCU

While the opening weekend for the The Marvels release is only slightly lower than that of the franchise's second-lowest opening, this is still a bad sign for the new MCU movie. When adjusted for inflation, The Incredible Hulk's domestic opening weekend actually lands at around $80 million, widening the gulf between the two movies even more. That $110 million worldwide opening weekend doesn't help much either, as that total is still significantly less than the original Captain Marvel made in its domestic opening alone, which grossed $153.4 million.
Indeed, 17 other MCU movies had their domestic openings outgross the new movie's global gross, ranging from the smash hit Avengers: Endgame at $357.1 million to Spider-Man: Homecoming at $117 million. This result may have been impacted by the fact that the The Marvels cast was unable to promote the movie for most of its pre-release campaign. That period landed during the 2023 actors strike, in which Screen Actors Guild members refrained from performing in or promoting struck productions while they fought for fair pay.
There are 33 movies in the MCU, meaning 16 movies had domestic openings below $110 million, including The Marvels.
However, The Marvels is not the only movie to have struggled with external factors at the box office. The MCU experienced a box office dip in mid-2021 when theaters were just reopening after COVID-19 pandemic-related closures, but those titles' domestic openings nevertheless outgrossed the new movie considerably, including Black Widow ($80.4 million), Shang-Chi ($75.4 million), and Eternals ($71.3 million). It remains to be seen how the new movie performs across its entire run, but its box office challenges have likely only just begun.
