The Winter Soldier is assembling a new Thunderbolts roster, complete with a shocking MCU recruit. Marvel has brought together a new incarnation of the venerable team, led by the Winter Soldier, ahead of their MCU debut. Just like the comics, the film will bring together some of Marvel’s dirtiest players, but with a few surprise recruits. Now, in Thunderbolts #1, fans meet one of the new members, who has deep ties to SHIELD.
Thunderbolts #1 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Geraldo Borges. In the book’s opening pages, fans see the trail the Winter Soldier is leaving across the Marvel Universe in his pursuit of the Outer Circle. The trail leads him to former SHIELD agent Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The Winter Soldier explains the last few months of his life, and asks Contessa to join him in tracking down the Outer Circle. The Contessa agrees, and a smiling Winter Soldier tells her “this is justice. Like lightning.”
Later, the Winter Soldier and the Contessa plan to storm Red Skull’s castle.
The Winter Soldier is Armed with Terrible Knowledge Previously, in Captain America, Cap and the Winter Soldier found themselves facing the mysterious Outer Circle, a secretive group manipulating world events from the shadows. Captain America, the Winter Soldier and others had been pawns of the Outer Circle for many years without knowing it. Captain America and his allies were able to take the Circle down, but in the aftermath, the Winter Soldier is now armed with dangerous knowledge. With this knowledge, he is going to build a new incarnation of the Thunderbolts to take down evildoers–and he’ll have a surprise ally in the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
The Contessa Valentia Allegra de Fontaine was created by legendary artist Jim Steranko
Fontaine’s inclusion into the new Thunderbolts roster should not come as a surprise, as the character is bringing the team together in the MCU. Played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the Contessa has been in shows such as Falcon and the Winter Soldier and movies like Black Widow, playing a role similar to Nick Fury in the early phases of the MCU. The character has a rich history in the comics as well, fighting alongside Nick Fury and SHIELD against the likes of HYDRA. However, the Contessa has never had ties to the Thunderbolts in the comics.
Related Marvel Finally Settles The Captain America vs Winter Soldier Debate Marvel has finally answered the question of who would win in a fight between Captain America and the Winter Soldier, and the outcome will shock fans.
The Contessa is a True Asset to the Thunderbolts--and the MCU While audiences are still learning about the Contessa and this new Thunderbolts team on-screen, theWinter Soldier has recruited her for a new incarnation in the comics. The exchange between the Winter Soldier and the Contessa makes it clear she has the skills necessary for the war that is about to be waged. The Contessa’s entire adult life has been one of subterfuge and spycraft, skills which will be an asset to the Winter Soldier’s new Thunderbolts team. While some may dismiss the Contessa’s inclusion as a gimmick to tie the book into the MCU, she in fact brings a lot to the team.
Thunderbolts #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics!
