    • Echo's world view and violent mentality were shaped by Wilson Fisk, who raised her and taught her the ways of violence.
    • Maya seeks revenge on Fisk for her father's death, but learning the truth about his involvement changes her understanding of him.
    • Echo's journey in the new series will explore her origins, her struggle with rage, and her attempt to find peace after the events of Hawkeye.
Echo star Alaxua Cox explained how Wilson Fisk's influence shaped Maya's worldview and turned her into the rageful person she is in Hawkeye and Echo. Maya is introduced as a powerful antagonist in Hawkeye, leading the Tracksuit Mafia for Fisk and hunting down the Ronin who killed her father. However, when she learned that Fisk was actually responsible for her father's death, she went after him, shooting him to avenge her father. The new series will explore not only the aftermath of these actions but also her origin and how she can escape the violence that Fisk brought into her life.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Echo, Cox broke down the dynamic between Maya and Wilson Fisk. She explained how he raised her, which shaped her worldview on violence. Cox also shared how Kingpin turned her into the rage-filled person that she was in Hawkeye. Check out Cox's full quote below:
Alaqua Cox: Maya's father, he died of course, and Fisk takes her in as a caregiver and cares for her. And then it's kind of crazy how Kingpin teaches her the violent lifestyle that she lives, and all these lies and betrayals happen, and all these bad things happen. I like how we show little Maya is able to beat up somebody because Kingpin was there and he showed her the way. Maya became this rageful person, all learned from Kingpin. It's very interesting to see that dynamic in a relationship.
How The Events Of Hawkeye Affect Echo Close Hawkeye set up the events in Echo by exploring Maya's connection to Fisk, her violent mentality, and the catalyst for her return to her hometown in Oklahoma. In Hawkeye, Maya's single-minded focus is avenging her father by targeting the Ronin, whom Fisk has poisoned her against after shaping her into a weapon. However, learning that Fisk is the responsible party tilts her world forever, changing her understanding of the man she once saw as an uncle figure.

Much about Maya's past is a mystery for now, but Echo will delve into how she became a loyal lieutenant to the crime lord. It seems Fisk helped shape her from childhood to become someone who was not only loyal to him but also useful. Part of what is interesting about Cox's insight is that Maya has been using violence to connect with and impress her uncle since childhood. Cultivating the rage instead of helping her move past it shows that while Fisk may have a fondness or love for Maya, he still raised her selfishly.
It seems learning of Fisk's deception may force Maya to change her worldview as she returns to her Oklahoma hometown, where she will need to contend with her heritage and the community she left behind when she moved to New York. How Maya faces her rage could be the determining factor in whether it will destroy her or whether she can find peace. How Maya will face Fisk after shooting him at the end of Hawkeye could also be at the heart of Maya's growth in Echo.

Echo begins streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9 at 6pm PT.
