Summary
- Madame Web's Rotten Tomatoes score is a disappointing 17%, reflecting the ongoing issues in the Sony Spider-Man Universe franchise.
- The film was expected to kickstart a positive year for the universe but has instead added to the disappointing track record of live-action projects set within the same franchise.
- Although the score is based on a small number of reviews, it is unlikely that more Madame Web exposure will see the film to be eventually considered one of the year's best superhero movies.
The Rotten Tomatoes score for
Madame Web has been unveiled, proving that the Sony Spider-Man Universe film cannot overcome recent issues plaguing the franchise. Madame Web is the fourth movie in Sony's universe after Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius, attempting to take the franchise in a new direction via a multiversal Spider-Man hero like Madame Web. With several other Marvel movies releasing in 2024 from Sony Pictures, the studio was likely hoping that Madame Web would kickstart a positive year for the universe centered on Spider-Man-adjacent characters.
Unfortunately, though,
Madame Web's lowly critical approval rating of 17% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes has proven the opposite. Rather than overcome the issues that have plagued Sony's other projects in this franchise, Madame Web has instead compounded a disappointing run of live-action projects. While the score of 17% is only based on 86 reviews and the score could still rise when more critics release their thoughts,
it is unlikely Madame Web will be counted among the best superhero movies of the year based on its initial scores, despite the story's promising cast of characters.

How Madame Web's Rotten Tomatoes Score Compares To Other SSU Movies
As alluded to,
Madame Web only continues a poor run of form regarding Sony's Spider-Man Universe. While the two Venom movies are often considered shoddily crafted albeit fun theater-going experiences, the reaction to Morbius was incredibly poor. Lacking the goofy, silly fun of the Venom movies, Morbius was panned upon release. It seems the unknown Marvel Comics character of Madame Web's film aligns more closely with the Jared Leto-led films, though there is still yet to be a Sony Spider-Man Universe movie released to a "Fresh" critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes which poorly reflects on the Venom sub-franchise too.

While the audience approval ratings for the SSU movies are fairly high, it is clear that critics find little to love in the franchise. Despite this ongoing disastrous trend of poor critical ratings, Sony Pictures has two more attempts to change the franchise's fortunes in 2024. An untitled, third Venom project is set for release in November 2024, while Kraven the Hunter is scheduled for August 2024. With
Madame Web disappointing critics, the creatives at Sony will pray for a more positive reception to the remaining 2024 projects so as to not derail the Sony Spider-Man Universe completely.
