“Don’t Do It, Save Yourself”: Spider-Verse Fan Wants To Read Spider-Man Comics - And Everybody’s Begging Him Not To

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.After watching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a fan decided they wanted to read Spider-Man comics but was begged not to by a lot of people who have read the ongoing Spider-Man comic book run. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"s shocking ending and excellent multiverse adventure have led many people to want to know more about the hero after leaving the film. One Marvel fan wanted to get into the current Spider-Man comics but was instantly bombarded with requests not to do so.
On Twitter, @ConquestOfEvo announced that they wanted to "read the current mainline [Spider-Man] comics" because of how good Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was, but those aware of what is going on in the comics urged him not to read them.
The ongoing controversy surrounding Zeb Wells" The Amazing Spider-Man run is due to the years-long issue that Marvel editorial has against Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson getting together. The latest chapter of that situation in the comics was the addition of Paul, MJ"s new boyfriend and current public enemy number one of the Spider-Man fanbase. The Spider-Man comics also received hate recently for killing Ms. Marvel.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Fixes The Comics" Issue Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featured Jake Johnson"s Peter B. Parker learning how to get his life back on track by helping Shameik Moore"s Miles Morales become the new Spider-Man of his world. By the end of the film, Peter understood what he needed to do to get out of the hole he had dug for himself, and at the top of the list of what he wanted to fix in his life was the character"s relationship with his world"s Mary Jane.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shows what happens between Peter B. Parker and MJ after the end of the first animated film. The once-divorced couple not only got back together, but they are now living happily with their young daughter, Mayday. While MJ does not have a big role in the film, the short time that she shares onscreen with Peter is a bigger service to their relationship than the last few years of Spider-Man comics, with it all dating back to 2007"s ill-received One More Day storyline, which saw Peter and MJ"s marriage be undone by Mephisto.
Based on that, it becomes clear why fans are urging others who enjoyed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse not to read the comics, as the beautiful father-daughter relationship Peter shares with Mayday in the movie is but a distant dream in the comic book realm. While the comics might not let Peter and MJ fans get their fix of the relationship, the characters should appear again in next year"s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, with at least Peter and Mayday confirmed for the film after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"s ending.
