Summary
  • Daredevil season 1 showrunner, Steven DeKnight, expressed his thoughts about the original version of Daredevil: Born Again getting scrapped.
  • DeKnight is pleased that Marvel has recognized the importance of having a showrunner to ensure the success of a series.
  • The changes to Daredevil: Born Again were made due to various production issues and to align the tone with the beloved Netflix series.
Following major Daredevil: Born Again news, the showrunner of Netflix's Daredevil season 1 has responded to the Marvel Cinematic Universe series' big changes. Marvel has decided to rework Daredevil: Born Again due to multiple production problems, firing all writers and directors attached to the show. According to the report, Daredevil: Born Again's tone was very different from the beloved Netflix series' action and violence, feeling more like a legal procedural, with Charlie Cox only suiting up as Daredevil in episode four, than the energetic Netflix series.
On Twitter, Netflix Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight responded to Daredevil: Born Again's changes, letting fans know what he thinks of the MCU series' creative overhaul.
While DeKnight made it clear that he is not happy that Daredevil: Born Again's plans were scrapped, the Netflix Daredevil season 1 showrunner revealed that he is "delighted that they finally realized you need an actual showrunner who's a writer to make a series work." DeKnight's showrunner comment stems from the report claiming that Marvel is now looking to hire showrunners for its Disney+ series. Maybe this way, Cox's series can resemble the high quality of Netflix Daredevil's three seasons.
How Daredevil: Born Again’s Creative Overhaul Can Help The Series Daredevil: Born Again's cast includes Cox as Matt Murdock and the return of two major stars from the Netflix series, Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. At this point, not much is known about Daredevil: Born Again's story; however, the original plans for the series would not have seen the returns of Matt's closest friends, Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page, who were rumored to have been killed in the MCU.
Marvel can use Daredevil: Born Again's creative overhaul to have Karen and Foggy back, even if not in major roles, as a way not to alienate fans of the Netflix series. A copyright filing revealed a synopsis for Daredevil: Born Again, which has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios, that hinted at Matt and Wilson Fisk leaving Daredevil and Kingpin behind at the start of the series. That is in line with the report that Cox would only suit up in episode four.
Netflix's Daredevil succeeded in large part due to the show's dark tone and the story perfectly mixing emotional and fun moments with eye-popping action. Based on the latest Daredevil: Born Again production report, the MCU series would have gone in another direction, which would not have worked for many fans. By keeping elements such as Kingpin working to help the people of New York — which rumors claim will be as the city's new Mayor — and bringing the series' tone closer to the Netflix show, inserting more visceral action into the series and perhaps adding Karen and Foggy, Daredevil: Born Again can be the show Marvel fans expect it to be.
