2024 Will Make Or Break 1 Specific Type Of Superhero Movie

Summary
  • Studios remain hesitant to greenlight R-rated superhero movies despite their potential. This reluctance is evident in the MCU's commitment to PG-13 ratings and Warner Bros.' resistance to allow James Gunn's conditions for an R-rated The Suicide Squad.
  • The success or failure of R-rated superhero films releasing in 2024, such as Deadpool 3, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Kraven the Hunter, will determine the future of R-rated superhero movies. Marvel Studios may consider making more R-rated films like Blade if Deadpool 3 performs well.
  • More R-rated superhero movies could benefit major franchises like Marvel and DC by allowing for a higher level of storytelling. The R-rating could enhance the authenticity and intensity of characters like Blade and accommodate James Gunn's style of irreverent humor in the DCU.
From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the rebooted DC Universe, 2024 will be a turning point for one specific type of superhero movie. Interestingly, 2024 will be a pivotal year for the superhero movie genre as a whole. The box office profits of 2023 - or lack thereof - for major superhero movies are undoubtedly a worry for the likes of Marvel Studios or Warner Bros. which are seemingly committed to the future of the genre through James Gunn's DCU slate for the latter and the continuation of the sprawling MCU for the former.

Despite the cruciality of the year for the superhero genre overall, it just so happens that the Marvel movies releasing in 2024 - and their DC counterparts - will impact the future of one specific type of comic book movie. The type of superhero film in question has been decidedly less common than the usual projects released by the MCU and the now-defunct DCEU. However, 2024 will be vital to either ensuring the continuation of such a superhero project or leaving them as a forgotten element of the past through the successes or failures of the MCU, DCU, and even the SSU.
Studios Are Continuously Wary To Greenlight R-Rated Superhero Movies R-rated superhero films are still a low priority for major studios. Close The specific type of superhero movies in question are R-rated projects which studios have proven to be continuously wary of. Concerning the MCU, the franchise has yet to theatrically release a story that possesses an R-rating. Every single one of the MCU's 33 theatrical movies has been rated PG-13, with Disney and Marvel Studios yet to make the jump into more mature storytelling.
The MCU's main rival, DC Studios, has been more open to R-rated films, though even then Warner Bros. has tried to avoid such an outcome. The most recent R-rated DC movie was 2021's The Suicide Squad, written and directed by new DC boss James Gunn. Gunn revealed in an interview with IndieWire that Warner Bros. hated his conditions for shooting the movie, one of which was that it was to be R-rated. This proves how wary studios can still be of R-rated superhero movies which is also echoed by Sony Pictures.
During the development of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it was reported that the film would be R-rated. According to various reports at the time of the film's production, director Andy Serkis considered crafting a more violent movie. This was proven not to be the case when the film was released as a PG-13 story. Interestingly, the action scenes in Venom 2 were noticeably choppy in the edit which suggests cuts were made to the film's more violent aspects, again hinting that studios are hesitant to commit to rated-R superhero projects.
2024 Could Make Or Break The Future Of R-Rated Superhero Movies The rise or fall of R-rated comic book films could be determined in 2024. Despite the obvious unwillingness of studios to greenlight R-rated superhero movies, three of the five to be released in 2024 are expected to be or have been confirmed to possess the more mature rating. These movies also fittingly come from each one of the major franchises in question; Deadpool 3's R-rated story is part of the MCU, Joker: Folie à Deux marks the DCU's contribution to 2024, and Kraven the Hunter is expected to be an R-rated extension of the SSU. Therefore, the success or failure of these films will be pivotal to the future of R-rated superhero films.
Interestingly, Marvel Studios has reportedly been mulling over future MCU projects like Blade being R-rated. Should Deadpool 3 succeed, it would likely make this decision easier. Similarly, a potential lack of box office success for Deadpool 3 would have an adverse effect on future R-rated MCU films. The same can be said for Joker 2 and whether more DCU films will be R-rated under Gunn's tenure. Finally, Kraven the Hunter is important to the SSU's future as it could solidify that franchise as one that benefits from more mature ratings.
Why More R-Rated Superhero Movies Could Benefit Marvel & DC Franchises Major superhero franchises could provide another level of storytelling with more mature ratings. As alluded to, more R-rated superhero movies could benefit both DC and Marvel properties going forward. The aforementioned Blade centers on the titular Marvel Comics character whose stories tend to be more bloody, gory, and violent than his peers. Adapting this style of comic would undoubtedly be much easier with an R-rating as it would allow the filmmakers to capture what makes the character of Blade so compelling without having to purposely tone the film down.
Concerning the DCU, James Gunn is a filmmaker who arguably thrives under R-ratings. While his work with the MCU has certainly proved he can craft well-made, emotional PG-13 movies, Gunn's style of irreverent, crude humor and violence shown in films like The Suicide Squad evidently works. This could translate well to the DCU films under Gunn's direction while also allowing other filmmakers to not feel cornered into one specific rating. This all proves that the 2024 R-rated superhero movies released in the MCU and DCU - along with the SSU - are integral to the future of the genre.
