Iron Man's nature as a hero allowed Marvel Studios to get away with the issues currently plaguing the costume change in The Marvels. It has been more than four years since the Infinity Saga wrapped up in Avengers: Endgame. Earth's Mightiest Heroes made their last stand against Thanos and his minions. The film also marked the swan song to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's inaugural hero. Much has happened in the franchise since Tony Stark's death, and it has been a conscious effort by Marvel Studios to move their storytelling forward with barely any references to Iron Man.
Considering how prominent Stark was in the MCU's Infinity Saga, however, it's difficult to totally disregard the hero's legacy. Iron Man was involved in almost every big event in the MCU's first decade as he functioned not only as an active hero but also as a financier for the Avengers. Many of the franchise's establishes tropes started with him and his movies. Aside from his personal arc and impact in the greater universe, his mere existence allowed Marvel Studios to get away with some narrative schemes. His absence in the Multiverse Saga exposes some issues, including The Marvels' latest one.

Ms. Marvel's Suit Change Hints At A Future MCU Merchandise Problem

The MCU Phase 5 continues, all eyes are on Disney+'s Secret Invasion. However, Marvel Studios is also looking forward to its next big screen release in Nia DaCosta's The Marvels. Set to premiere in November, marketing for the movie is slowly ramping up. After the release of its first trailer, additional promotional materials are being rolled out, including a brand-new poster, debuting Ms. Marvel's upgraded costume. Suit changes aren't new to comic book movies, but Kamala Khan's fresh suit is being specifically scrutinized because she doesn't need a new one after Ms. Marvel on Disney+.
Currently, there are speculations that Ms. Marvel gets a new costume in The Marvels purely to sell merchandise. Narratively, there is really no need for her to get a fresh costume, considering that her last one is fairly new. Assuming that this is the case, this isn't exactly new, however. For years, Marvel Studios has been giving their heroes essentially a costume refresh every single time they return to the screen. Selling toys and other tie-in merchandise is definitely a factor in that.
That being said, they were able to get away with it primarily because of Iron Man. Since Stark was an innovator, it made sense for him to continue tinkering with his suits, resulting in having a new one each time he appears on a project. It's also worth noting that his armors having upgrades fit in his character and even personal arc. Unfortunately, that isn't the case with most Multiverse Saga heroes, including Ms. Marvel.

Why The MCU Can't Justify Costume Changes Like It Once Could

With Iron Man's death in Avengers: Endgame, it will be difficult for Marvel Studios to get away with always debuting a new superhero suit like they're doing in The Marvels. Aside from upgrading his own armor, Stark was generous enough to also make some tweaks to his fellow Avengers' costumes and tech. No one has yet to take on this role since his demise. In the Multiverse Saga, the franchise having more heroes means less time fleshing them out as characters. This is made worse by the multiverse's expansion. It doesn't make sense for the majority of them to sport a new ensemble when their appearances aren't as frequent.
