Wait, Is Spider-Man In Madame Web?

Summary
  • The first trailer for Madame Web hints at the possibility of Spider-Man appearing in the film, but it is unlikely considering this is Madame Web's introduction to the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
  • The trailer shows a brief scene with someone wearing a red and black Spider-Man suit, sparking speculation about a potential Spider-Man appearance.
  • Madame Web introduces the concept of Spider-Totems and already features multiple Spider-People, including Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin, and Anya Corazon, with their full transformations yet to be revealed.
The first trailer for Madame Web teases the introduction of different characters from Spider-Man’s universe, and it has raised questions about Spider-Man himself appearing in it. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding with its Multiverse Saga, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continues to grow with characters associated with Spider-Man, especially darker, more antagonistic characters. After the failure of Morbius, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is moving on with Madame Web, directed by S.J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, the title Madame Web.
Madame Web tells the story of Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who, after a near-death experience, gains clairvoyant abilities. Cassandra is then forced to confront her past while trying to survive with three young women – Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) – with powerful futures who are being targeted by a masked threat. The trailer for Madame Web shows brief flashbacks to Cassandra’s past, and in one blink-and-you-miss-it scene, there seems to be a hint of Spider-Man showing up in this new adventure.
Will Spider-Man Appear In Madame Web? The MCU has now confirmed, thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home, that the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe are part of the same multiverse, so there are different Spider-Men that could, at one point, make an appearance in either universe. A surprise appearance of Spider-Man in Sony’s Universe has been rumored since Venom was released, but Sony’s Universe has focused on building its universe without Spider-Man. While Madame Web has strong links to Spider-Man, it’s unlikely Spider-Man will be included, more so as this is Madame Web’s first movie and thus her introduction to the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
Speculation about Spider-Man’s possible appearance in Madame Web gained force thanks to one very brief scene in the trailer. During a quick flashback to Cassandra’s past (at around the 51-second mark in the trailer below), there’s someone on the left side of the screen with the distinctive red and black of a Spider-Man suit, and even the texture of it is similar to Spider-Man’s suit. Of course, it could be someone entirely different, and the texture could be some sort of plant as this person and Cassandra’s mother were in what looked to be a cave.
It’s also worth noting that it’s unclear when exactly is Madame Web set, as it’s possible it’s set many years before Peter Parker was born. Adam Scott’s character is rumored to be playing a young Uncle Ben, so if true, it's highly unlikely that the current Spider-Man will make an appearance in Madame Web.
Which Spider-Man Would Be In Madame Web's Universe? If there’s a Spider-Man in Madame Web’s universe, it most likely wouldn’t be Peter Parker, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for it to have a Spider-Man. Madame Web is introducing Spider-Totems and the Web of Life and Destiny, the latter a three-dimensional construct in five-dimensional space that acts as a model of the entire multiverse, enabling travel between realities. Spider-Totems are a class of multiversal supernatural entities created by the goddess Neith and linked to the Web.
Each dimension has its own Spider-Totem, with Peter Parker being the one of Earth-616, and Spider-Totems can select individuals within any universe to serve as their avatars. Through Spider-Totems and Totemic Avatars, Madame Web could have a Spider-Man even if it’s set before Peter Parker’s time.
Madame Web Has Multiple Spider-People Close Even if Spider-Man isn’t in Madame Web and the person in the flashback is someone entirely different, Madame Web already has multiple Spider-People. The girls Cassandra teams up with and tries to protect are Spider-People, and Cassandra knows because she saw their futures. Julia Carpenter becomes Spider-Woman, as does Mattie Franklin, while Anya Corazon becomes Araña, who in the comics later becomes Spider-Girl. The Madame Web trailer shows Julia, Mattie, and Anya in their costumes and fighting, though it’s unclear if these will just be visions or if they will make their full transformations in this movie.
In addition to them, Madame Web’s antagonist is Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who was recently seen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as Spider-Therapist. Sims gained powers similar to those of Spider-Man, and in the comics, he explained to Spider-Man the nature of animal totems. Sims also possesses a type of extrasensory perception that serves as an early warning system, as teased in the Madame Web trailer when Cassandra mentions Sims has visions too. Madame Web doesn’t really need Spider-Man (yet), but it already has some interesting Spider-People.
