Samuel L. Jackson returned to the MCU in The Marvels, but the Phase 5 sequel seemed to forget one of his most important storylines that Marvel Studios set up only months prior. Nick Fury has been a staple of the MCU since his debut in Iron Man, having now appeared in more projects than any other MCU character, and playing a central role in the formation and success of the Avengers. Despite having been in the MCU since the start, Fury wasn't the star of his own project until 2023's Secret Invasion, and although the series performed disappointingly, some major storylines were set up for the former Director of SHIELD.
Secret Invasion saw Nick Fury return to Earth to deal with the threat of a rebellious faction of shapeshifting Skrulls living among humanity, and the series supposedly led directly into the events of Phase 5's The Marvels. Released on November 10, 2023, The Marvels saw Fury back on the SABER Space Station, aiding Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau's Photon, and Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel during their battle against new MCU villain Dar-Benn. The Marvels saw Fury back on form, but the film also ignored one major part of his story from Secret Invasion that should have had a much greater impact on his character and Nick Fury's MCU timeline.
Nick Fury's Wife Varra Doesn’t Appear In The Marvels Close In an effort to delve deeper into Nick Fury's personal life, Secret Invasion debuted Charlayne Woodard as Priscilla Fury, Nick Fury's wife. Priscilla was soon revealed to actually be a Skrull named Varra, who had helped Fury integrate Skrull refugees into human society years previously, but had now become disillusioned with her husband's motives. Varra's MCU debut expanded Nick Fury's story in some powerful ways, showing a more emotional, tender, and romantic side to the world-renowned spy, and also acted as proof that human and Skrull can live side-by-side. However, the depth of this storyline was lost in The Marvels, as Varra didn't make an appearance, or was even mentioned.

It perhaps made sense that Varra was left out of The Marvels, as the Phase 5 film wasn't Nick Fury's story, but rather focused on the new MCU team of Captain Marvel, Photon, and Ms. Marvel. Nick Fury's role in The Marvels was to push forward the narrative for the three female leads, while also hilariously dealing with a surprise Flerken infestation on the SABER Space Station. Nevertheless, Varra traveled to SABER with Fury at the end of Secret Invasion, so it was jarring that she didn't make a single appearance, or even received a mention, particularly after Fury seemed to have a lot of personal growth in Secret Invasion.
The Marvels' Varra Cut Makes Secret Invasion's Ending Even Weirder

In the final moments of Secret Invasion episode 6, "Home," Varra and Nick Fury reunite, with Fury finally accepting his wife in her true Skrull form before the pair travel to the SABER Space Station together. This implied that Varra was indeed aboard the SABER Space Station during the events of the Phase 5 team-up film, but she didn't appear once. The rushed ending of Secret Invasion was confusing anyway, with Fury seemingly abandoning Earth once again even after learning that may not be the best idea. The Marvels' omission of Varra has only made this weirder, as it's possible The Marvels has simply retconned the ending of Secret Invasion.
