  • The canon status of Agent Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been disputed following the development of MCU-specific shows on Disney+.
Marvel Television brought many new and returning characters into live-action during Agent Carter, taking place after the events of 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger in the MCU. In the wake of Captain America: The First Avenger and the 2013 One-Shot short film Agent Carter, Marvel Television and ABC Studios developed a TV series focusing on Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers' love interest. Agent Carter ran for two seasons between 2015 and 2016 before being canceled despite its positive reception. Although Agent Carter made references to the wider MCU, its canon status, much like Agents of SHIELD, has been disputed following Marvel Studios' development of MCU-specific shows on Disney+.
Agent Carter saw Peggy Carter balance her life as a secret agent working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve - a precursor to SHIELD - with her life as a single woman in 1940s America, following the apparent death of Steve Rogers' Captain America. In season 1, Carter works with Howard Stark's butler to find those responsible for framing Stark for the sale of deadly weapons, and season 2 explored the threats of the Atomic Age after Carter's move from New York to Los Angeles. Over the course of Agent Carter's two seasons, several actors from Captain America: The First Avenger reprised their roles, and many new characters were also introduced.

Hayley Atwell as Margaret "Peggy" Carter Hayley Atwell debuted as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, gaining a huge amount of popularity that led to her starring spot in Agent Carter. Working at the SSR's New York office, Carter initially carries out mundane administrative work while also taking on secret missions, eventually earning the respect of her colleagues who routinely undermined her. Atwell reprised the role of Agent Carter several times in the MCU proper, including in projects such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Avengers: Endgame, and in What If...? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Peggy's superhero variant Captain Carter.
James D'Arcy as Edwin Jarvis While JARVIS was introduced as Tony Stark's artificial intelligence in 2008's Iron Man, Agent Carter revealed that JARVIS had been based on Howard Stark's human butler, Edwin Jarvis. Jarvis supports Peggy Carter on her mission to clear Stark's name after he's framed for selling deadly weapons to the USSR and ends up helping her with missions separate from those involving Stark. James D'Arcy is best known for his roles in Jupiter Ascending, Oppenheimer, Broadchurch, and Homeland, and returned as Edwin Jarvis in Avengers: Endgame, seen during Tony Stark and Steve Rogers' mission to 1970, marking the first time a character from a Marvel Television series appeared in the MCU.
Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark Dominic Cooper first appeared as Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to have a pivotal role in Agent Carter as the instigator of several of Peggy's missions. John Slattery portrayed the older Howard Stark in MCU projects such as Iron Man 2, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame, and Cooper's iteration was inspired by Slattery's mannerisms as Tony Stark's father and the former CEO of Stark Industries. In the Agent Carter One-Shot, which was interpreted as the ending of the Agent Carter series, Stark asks Peggy Carter to help him form SHIELD, linking back to their role with the organization in the MCU.
Chad Michael Murray as Jack Thompson Jack Thompson is a war veteran and Chief of the New York SSR office in Agent Carter, having received a promotion after taking credit for much of Peggy Carter's work in defeating the Soviet-based terrorist group Leviathan. For Agent Carter season 2, Thompson is made Chief of the East Coast SSR office, yet continues his egotistical, chauvinistic, and opportunistic tendencies. Chad Michael Murray is best known for his previous roles in One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, and Dawson's Creek. Thompson eventually accepts Agent Carter and aids her in season 2 before being shot by an unknown assailant while preparing to return to New York City.
Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa A war veteran and SSR agent, Daniel Sousa faces different prejudices to Peggy Carter, as he is undermined due to a leg injury sustained during World War II. Sousa's investigation into Howard Stark leads him to discover Carter's status as a traitor, though the pair eventually strike up a romantic relationship following their defeat of Whitney Frost. Enver Gjokaj previously portrayed a New York City police officer in The Avengers and reprised the role of Daniel Sousa in Agents of SHIELD season 7, which reveals that his relationship with Carter didn't last. However, Sousa strikes up a romance with Chloe Bennet's Daisy Johnson, and he eventually joins the present-day SHIELD.
Shea Whigham as Roger Dooley Shea Whigham's Roger Dooley is introduced as the Chief of the SSR's New York office, overseeing Agents Carter, Thompson, and Sousa, before his death in Agent Carter season 1, episode 7, at the hands of Russian hypnotist Johann Fennhoff. Dooley was a short-lived and lesser-known character in Marvel Comics, allowing Whigham to flesh him out properly for Agent Carter. Whigham is known for roles in several high-profile projects including The Wolf of Wall Street, Joker, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Boardwalk Empire, so his inclusion in Agent Carter brought gravitas to the Marvel Television series, even though Dooley didn't survive for too long.

Captain America - Although MCU star Chris Evans himself doesn't appear in Agent Carter, archive footage of Steve Rogers from Captain America: The First Avenger is used throughout the series, highlighting Peggy Carter's continuous grief and Howard Stark's friendship for the star-spangled man-with-a-plan.
