10 Best Quotes From Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Summary
  • Across the Spider-Verse's well-written script mixes humor with drama, such as Spider-Man India's confusion about the phrase "chai tea."
  • Even though Spider-Man 2099 is positioned as the movie's villain, he has memorable quotes that inspire thought about balancing personal happiness and the greater good.
  • One of Miles' biggest moments of character growth leads to the shocking twists that he's not actually back home after all.
Many memorable quotes were featured in Sony's 2023 animated adventure Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. As the sequel to 2018's smash-hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - set separate from the MCU and Sony's Spider-Man Universe - Across the Spider-Verse caught up with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) a year and a half after he first became Spider-Man. The animated sequel introduced many new characters to the Spider-Verse franchise, including hundreds of new and familiar Spider-People, expanding Miles Morales' world beyond belief. Across the Spider-Verse also debuted sinister new villains in the form of the multiversal Spot (Jason Schwartzman) and the leader of the Spider Society, Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac).
While Miles Morales is still the focus in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel also delvs deeper into the stories of other Spider-People, notably Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld), whose relationship with her father is explored in more detail. Several new realities are investigated throughout Across the Spider-Verse, leading to some interesting and sometimes confusing conversations between these beloved characters. Even so, this allowed writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham to include some instantly memorable quotes, delivering comedy, drama, and emotional weight.
10 "You're Saying 'Tea Tea!'" Pavitr Prabhakar, A.K.A. Spider-Man: India The first alternate dimension that Miles Morales travels to in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is Earth-50101, home to Pavitr Prabhakar, a.k.a. Spider-Man: India (Karan Soni). This created the opportunity for cultural differences and discrepancies to be explored in Spider-Man: India's opening speech, which noted one mistake often spoken in the Western world. In numerous languages, 'chai' is translated literally as 'tea,' though this delicious beverage is often asked for as 'chai tea.' This error was pointed out hilariously by Spider-Man: India, who noted that nobody would ask for "'coffee coffee' with room for 'cream cream.'"
What did you just say? Chai tea? Chai means 'tea,' bro! You're saying 'tea tea!' Would I ask you for 'coffee coffee' with room for 'cream cream?'
9 "Miles, Being Spider-Man Is A Sacrifice..." Miguel O'Hara, A.K.A. Spide-Man 2099 Close Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, was introduced as the leader of the Spider Society in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, who believes that Miles Morales' very existence as Spider-Man breaks a series of Spider-Verse's canon events. O'Hara incorrectly assumes that Miles hasn't sacrificed anything to become Spider-Man, neglecting to remember that Miles' Uncle Aaron was revealed to be the villainous Prowler before being killed in Into the Spider-Verse. When Miles' father's life is on the line - suspected to complete a canon event - the pair brawl, and Spider-Man 2099 stresses the fact that saving Miles' father isn't more important than saving "an entire world, every world."
Miles, being Spider-Man is a sacrifice. That's the job. That's what you signed up for. You have a choice between saving one person, and saving an entire world, every world.
8 "Taking A Crap On The Establishment. I Salute You." Hobie Brown, A.K.A. Spider-Punk Among the many Spider-People introduced in Across the Spider-Verse, Hobie Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), was one of the most unique. Already disgruntled with the actions of the Spider Society, Hobie helps Miles Morales several times throughout Across the Spider-Verse, and regularly notes his distaste for the establishment and societal norms. This is most evident when Mayday Parker, Peter B. Parker's (Jake Johnson) daughter, does what comes naturally to babies while visiting the Spider Society with her father. This act earns her Spider-Punk's respect, shortly before he decides to resign from the Spider Society completely.
Taking a crap on the establishment. I salute you.
7 "I've Got You Trapped In My Well-Defined Musculature..." Ben Reilly, A.K.A. Scarlet Spider The highly-anticipated Ben Reilly, a.k.a. Scarlet Spider (Andy Samberg), was also included in the Spider Society's roster in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, though he wasn't an ally to Miles Morales, instead being featured as one of Miguel O'Hara's most loyal soldiers. Throughout the film, Reilly regularly laments about his dark and tortured soul, and tragic history, though this backstory isn't actually explored in any detail. His matter-of-fact speech created some of Across the Spider-Verse's most enjoyable moments, including one when he gets Miles Morales in a choke-hold, noting that the young Spider-Man is "trapped in [his] well-defined musculature," - though Miles quickly escaped.
I've got you trapped in my well-defined musculature so don't even...
6 "You're The Best Thing I've Ever Done." George Stacy Gwen Stacy takes a more leading role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, allowing the young Spider-Woman's backstory and family relationships to be uncovered. The most poignant of these comes during exchanges between Gwen and her father, police Captain George Stacy, who finds out her identity as Spider-Woman in the film's opening moments but renounces her. Gwen battles with the realization that her father will need to die to fulfill a canon event throughout Across the Spider-Verse, but this is broken when he reveals he has quit the force and is no longer a Captain before finally accepting his daughter for who she is, and the heroism she carries out.
My job... being Captain. This whole thing doesn't matter anymore. You're the best thing I've ever done.
5 "The Power Of The Multiverse In The Palm Of My Hand." Johnathon Ohnn, A.K.A. The Spot Close While Spider-Man 2099 is a more human threat aimed at Miles Morales, the young Spider-Man also comes face-to-face with Johnathon Ohnn, a.k.a. the Spot, a villain created after Miles and Peter B. Parker's escapades at Kingpin's facility in Into the Spider-Verse. After being exposed to the energy of the collider, Ohnn was transformed into a strange, humanoid creature, devoid of features apart from spots that cover his body and form portals into alternate dimensions. Throughout Across the Spider-Verse, the Spot gains power and references Dr. Otto Octavius' infamous line from 2004's Spider-Man 2 to demonstrate just how much he has gained.
The power of the multiverse in the palm of my hand. My holes aren't a curse. They're the answer!
4 "Make Sure He Never Forgets Where He Came From..." Rio Morales The majority of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse saw Miles Morales embarking on a spectacular multiversal journey, but the film also made time for some incredibly touching and tender moments between him and his parents, Jeff and Rio Morales (Brian Tyree Henry and Lauren Vélez, respectively). Although his family don't know about his Spider-Man activities, Miles' mother shares a few words of wisdom with him before he leaves to join Gwen and the Spider Society, reminding him that he is always loved and she hopes he takes care of himself. These words resound with Miles, as he references this beautiful moment later on, though this came with a twist.
Wherever you go from here, you have to promise to take care of that little boy for me. Make sure he never forgets where he came from. And he never doubts that he's loved. And never lets anyone tell him that he doesn't belong there. You've gotta promise, Miles.
3 "I Never Found The Right Band To Join..." Gwen Stacy, A.K.A. Spider-Woman Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens with Gwen Stacy's Spider-Woman backstory being explored, culminating in her joining a band that she realizes she doesn't actually fit into. Throughout the film, Gwen's yearning for a place to belong is put front and center. This presents itself in interactions with Miles and her hope to find a home at the Spider Society, but she soon finds she doesn't fit in there, either. Instead, Gwen decides to build her own Spider-Person team after learning that Miles has become trapped in a dark alternate dimension, marking the returns of some familiar favorites from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
I never found the right band to join, so I started my own, with a few old friends. You want in?
2 "I Know You Know I've Been Lying To You..." Miles Morales, A.K.A. Spider-Man After Miles Morales manages to escape from the clutches of the Spider Society, he inadvertently travels to Earth-42, the home dimension of the spider that initially bit him, instead of his home, Earth-1610. It takes him a while to realize his mistake, however, so he goes home, and decides to finally come clean to his mother, referencing their earlier conversation before he left for his interdimensional adventure. This was a brilliant moment of confidence and presence from Miles, yet it amounted to nothing and led to his capture by an alternate Uncle Aaron and his own variant, Miles G. Morales, a.k.a. the Prowler.
I know you know I've been lying to you. It's because I thought, if you knew, you wouldn't love me the same. And then I went out there, and now I'm not afraid of anything. Mom, I'm Spider-Man.
1 "Everyone Keeps Telling Me How My Story Is Supposed To Go." Miles Morales, A.K.A. Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse may have featured Miles Morales as a child who was just learning about his new powers, but Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse saw him really come into his own as Spider-Man. Perhaps the earlier Miles would have relented when presented with the threat of breaking canon events, but this more confident version of Miles was prepared to go up against the combined might of the Spider Society to pave his own path. This included battling Spider-Man 2099 one-on-one and disagreeing fervently with the Spider Society's leader, claiming that nobody will tell him how his story is supposed to go.
Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah. I'm gonna do my own thing.
