Spider-Man: Homecoming Pitch Meeting — Revisited!

  • Spider-Man: Homecoming launched a new franchise in the MCU, but in spite of its successes, there were a few flaws, which Screen Rant reflects on in its latest Pitch Meeting – Revisited episode.
  • Between a reliance on Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark and twisting moments from previous adaptations of the webslinger.
  • The sequels to Homecoming improved on the original by focusing less on exterior MCU characters and instead building on the character development of Tom Holland's Peter Parker.
With the character's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe still unclear, Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is looking back on its Spider-Man: Homecoming analysis. The 2017 movie served as the launchpad for a new franchise revolving around the webslinger, this time set in the MCU and following the early days of Tom Holland's Peter Parker in his early days of heroism as he sought to bring down Michael Keaton's Vulture. Homecoming was a critical and commercial hit upon its release, initially setting a record for the second-highest-grossing installment of the Spider-Man franchise and spawning two follow-ups and a third in development.
Nearly seven years after the movie first hit theaters, Screen Rant's own Pitch Meeting series is taking a look back at its original Spider-Man: Homecoming episode. The video, as seen at the top of this article, features the original analysis in which host Ryan George poked fun at the 2017 movie's reliance on repeating tropes from previous Spider-Man adaptations, as well as frequently utilizing Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark to fix problems the titular webslinger couldn't. The video then goes on to see George edit his original script to better fit his current style of Pitch Meeting humor, while still acknowledging some critiques still hold up.
How Holland's Spider-Man Sequels Improved On Homecoming Close At the time of its release, Spider-Man: Homecoming proved to be a welcome surprise for both critics and audiences alike, who initially expressed doubts about the possibility of a second reboot being any better than the previous one given how quickly it came after its predecessor. The MCU title ultimately succeeded largely thanks to its upbeat tone, better fleshing out Peter's teenage life than previous movies and avoidance of the origin story seen in previous movies. In spite of its successes, there were a few elements that felt underwhelming to some, namely the overreliance on Downey Jr.'s Iron Man.
Related Iron Man’s Complete MCU Timeline Explained The MCU’s Tony Stark lived a dramatic and action-packed life as both the genius billionaire playboy and as the armored hero known as Iron Man.
Heading into its sequels, however, director Jon Watts and writing duo Chris McKenna and Erik Summers frequently found ways to improve on the impressive groundwork laid down by Homecoming. Picking up shortly after Avengers: Endgame, 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home was able to use Stark's MCU death for a meaningful exploration of how the titular webslinger could forge his own legacy rather than look to emanate Iron Man's. Even as Spider-Man: No Way Home leaned into its nostalgic actor returns for its multiverse story, it still pushed Holland's hero into learning some challenging lessons he will carry with him into his future adventures.
With a Spider-Man 4 currently in the works for the MCU without Watts back at the helm, it will be interesting to see if the studio will at least bring back Sommers and McKenna to craft Holland's next story. Given the acclaim they found with their work on Holland's first three installments, it would be a shame if they didn't continue building on the success that began with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This time, Peter battles with Adrian Toomes, who takes on the moniker Vulture after profiting off of selling Chitari technology and weapons. Under Tony Stark's guidance, Peter must prove himself a hero while protecting his city from Vulture and the other criminals in New York. Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first of three films in director Jon Watts' MCU journey, dubbed the "Homecoming" trilogy.
