Spider-Verse Theory Explains Doctor Strange"s No Way Home Spell Failure

Summary
  • A Spider-Verse theory connects the No Way Home's narrative with the establishing of a Spider-Man focused multiverse in other movie releases.
  • The Spider-Totems concept from comics unite Spider-Man franchises and explore the Web of Life and Destiny.
  • This could explain why Doctor Strange's No Way Home spell backfires, and hold larger implications for Marvel's movie landscape.
One theory from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse may explain Doctor Strange’s multiversal magic mishap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The multiverse has been a popular concept in recent years, especially in superhero fiction, with the MCU’s current Multiverse Saga centering the multiverse in its many installments following Phase 3. The various Spider-Man franchises, from the MCU’s own Spider-Man movies to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe have also made frequent use of the concept as well, with the multiverse being an essential component of the Spider-Verse series especially. One concept from the comics may unite each of these franchises.
Despite its premise relying on the nebulous concept of the multiverse, No Way Home’s narrative is relatively small at first. Peter Parker and Doctor Strange’s botched spell was intended to return a sense of normalcy to the former’s personal life, only for a group of deadly supervillains (and their respective Spider-Man variants) to enter the MCU’s reality. The stakes became far more extraordinary in the film’s third act, thanks to the actions of the Green Goblin, but a potential connection exists between all Spider-Man franchises, possibly making the events of No Way Home even more important.

Spider-Totems In Sony's Spider-Man Universe Explained Close The relatively recent concept of Spider-Totems debuted in the J. Michael Straczynski run of The Amazing Spider-Man comics. Essentially, Spider-Totems are spider-powered beings found throughout the multiverse. Every universe has an equivalent to Spider-Man whose existence connects them to a construct known as the Web of Life and Destiny. This construct serves as a model of the multiverse and can grant beings abilities akin to precognition. Madame Webb’s clairvoyant powers come from her ability to tap into the Web of Life and Destiny and perceive its patterns. These concepts have seemingly already been introduced to the Spider-Man films.
2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and No Way Home each have their respective heroes tap into the multiverse – seemingly incidentally. In Into the Spider-Verse, Peter B. Parker, Spider-Woman, and the other multiversal spider heroes enter Miles Morales’s universe thanks to the Kingpin’s collider and No Way Home’s multiversal events are due to a botched reality-warping spell from Doctor Strange. Daniel Espinosa – the director of the Sony Spider-Man Universe’s Morbius – has confirmed that the connection between the Spider-Man franchises is even more robust, as the films’ respective realities all include a Spider-Totem. Espinosa notes in an interview with CinemaBlend:
So in almost all verses, you have Spider-Man, or a Fantastic Four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius. But they will be different in tone. That's not quite the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (is) approaching the idea, but they're remaining to some core truth. Then you have the second kind of legend, which is about the totem. Which is that, in all universes, there is a spider totem. Which means that in all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man. Or a Spider-Woman.
Spider-Verse 2 Reveals The Multiverse Has Been Damaged Close Across the Spider-Verse explores the intricacies of the multiverse, introducing the concept of “canon events” – critical occurrences that supposedly cannot be avoided. Preventing a canon event from occurring, according to the film’s version of Miguel O’Hara, could cause a universe to collapse and begin a chain reaction that breaks all other universes. The film’s version of Miles Morales has a history rife with anomalies. The spider that gave Miles his powers comes from another universe, depriving that reality of its Spider-Man and leading its version of Miles to become the Prowler.
Related Morbius Director Confirms Spider-Man Exists In Sony Universe (& Hints At Iron Man) Director Daniel Espinosa confirms that a version of most marvel characters exists in Sony"s Morbius universe, including Spider-Man and Iron Man!
The film’s main version of Miles breaks a canon event by saving the life of Police Inspector Singh on Earth-50101 and later learns that his father’s death is his universe’s canon event. Across the Spider-Verse ends on a cliffhanger, with Miles captured by his Earth-42 doppelgänger but nevertheless determined to save his father, canon event or not. As it stands, Miles has disrupted two timelines – including his own – prevented one canon event, and seeks to avert another. This leaves the multiverse in a damaged state that likely affects other universes, including possibly the MCU.
Theory: Spider-Verse 2 Explains Doctor Strange's No Way Home Problems Close In No Way Home, Doctor Strange’s reality-altering spell was only meant to make the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Peter’s repeated interruptions and subsequent spell alterations – with Peter’s last request being that everyone who knew he was Spider-Man before Mysterio’s broadcast remain unaffected – resulted in six beings from other universes entering the MCU reality, along with two alternate versions of Spider-Man. Given the esoteric nature of the MCU’s magic, a proper explanation is not given for why the multiverse was affected by Strange’s spell, but the events of the Spider-Verse films might be the answer.
The Sony Spider-Man Universe’s Venom is transported to the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to the symbiote’s knowledge of Spider-Man and Peter Parker in other realities.
Daniel Espinosa has already noted that Spider-Totems exist among the various Marvel film universes and the model of the multiverse as shown in Across the Spider-Verse – which resembles the Web of Life and Destiny – has demonstrably sustained damage. With this in mind, Doctor Strange’s spell was meant to alter the path of his universe’s Spider-Totem, dealing with a broken portion of the multiverse, perhaps dooming it even before Peter’s interruptions wreaked further havoc. Whatever the full implications of the spell are, it caught the attention of Miguel O’Hara, who references the events of No Way Home in Across the Spider-Verse.
All three live-action Spider-Man variants either appear or are referenced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
How This Spider-Verse 2 Theory Can Lead To A Much Bigger Multiverse The upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the conclusion to the Multiverse Saga in the Avengers: Secret Wars movie will likely see more Marvel realities colliding. The events of the Spider-Verse films, which could be the throughline that connects all Spider-Man universes – including the MCU – may account for a specific multiversal incursion that affects the various Spider-Totems of all realities. Fixing this incursion would be a natural way to connect Spider-Man: No Way Home to the Spider-Verse films and see various Spider-Man variants unite once more, perhaps even having animated characters like Miles Morals interact with live-action Spider-Man variants.
Spider-Man: No Way Home For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the trials and tribulations of being a superhero. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) asks for help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) when his identity becomes a problem for the ones he loves. Unfortunately, when the spell goes wrong, Spider-Man will now have to face off with villains such as Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) as Peter finally comes to terms that he can't run from being Spider-Man. Supported by his close friends and help from an unexpected place (or multiverse), Spider-Man will go toe-to-toe with some of the most legendary foes in his storied history.
