X-Men ‘97 Shows How Easy It Is For The MCU To Fix A Mutant Fox Neglected Badly

Summary
  • After the live-action X-Men movies wasted his potential for years, Cyclops shines in X-Men '97, where he shows the full extent of his optic beams and his fighting skills.
  • X-Men '97 also highlights Scott Summer's leadership skills and his importance to the X-Men team.
  • The MCU can learn from X-Men '97 by honoring Cyclops' leader role without overshadowing other X-Men members.
Marvel's X-Men '97 proves how much Fox's X-Men movies wasted a top-tier mutant, but also how easy it will be for live-action MCU projects to fix that mistake. Years before the live-action X-Men movies existed, X-Men: The Animated Series adapted the famous Marvel comic books to a new medium, bringing Professor X's team to a wider audience. Thanks to X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men '97 mutant characters who were introduced back then, like Rogue, Storm, Gambit, and Cyclops, were able to reach the same level of popularity as Marvel icons as famous as Spider-Man and Captain America.
Then, throughout almost two decades, the thirteen films in Fox's X-Men movie franchise put most of their focus on Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Wolverine became the main star of nine of Fox's X-Men movies, including four team-up installments: X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Although Jackman's Wolverine played an important role in popularizing the superhero genre in Hollywood, having a single, well-defined protagonist is a departure from the X-Men comics and animated series. As such, Wolverine overshadowed other mutants who have his same potential to be Marvel stars.
X-Men ‘97 Proves How Powerful Cyclops Really Is X-Men '97's Cyclops Is Strategic With His Optic Beams Custom Image by Nicolas Ayala X-Men '97 doesn't waste a moment in showcasing the X-Men's true power. Storm weaponizes sand by turning it into glass with her lightning, Morph uses the abilities of powerful mutants like Colossus and Psylocke, and Cyclops uses his optic beams in multiple creative ways. Although Cyclops' energy blasts are concussive instead of heat-based, he knows exactly how to wield them. In the reference-filled X-Men '97 episodes 1 and 2, Cyclops slices Sentinel heads, uses his beams to push himself around the battlefield while fighting multiple enemies simultaneously, and shoots a huge beam into the ground to soften his landing.
The X-Men movies heavily downplayed Cyclops' abilities. James Marsden's Cyclops only used his optic beams in a handful of scenes, where he used them to break doors, ceilings, and shackles, or just to push enemies back. X-Men Origins: Wolverine featured Tim Pocock's young Scott Summers using a slightly more powerful version of his powers, but he still used them just to break objects. And while Tye Sheridan's Cyclops had more screentime than the previous two actors, his powers were also depicted just as bluntly.

X-Men ‘97 Respects Cyclops’ X-Men Field Leader Role X-Men '97's Cyclops Is The Mutant Team's Undeniable Leader Close In just two 30-minute episodes, X-Men '97 gives Cyclops a bigger role than the X-Men film franchise did with its live-action version of the character. In the animated series, Cyclops makes the team's strategic decisions as the X-Men's captain, telling each member where to go and what to do. All of his teammates trust him, and his feats of power prove why. Cyclops' responsibility also weighs on him, as he struggles to balance his job with the X-Men with his personal life when Jean Grey gives birth to his son Nathan Summers.
Reducing Cyclops to a regular member of the X-Men in live-action is a detriment to his comic book history
Cyclops' leadership has been a central aspect of his character ever since his comic book debut in 1963. He has commanded various iterations of the team throughout the decades in the source material, from Professor X's first-ever X-Men team to the X-Force and the Phoenix Five. Hence, reducing Cyclops to a regular member of the X-Men in live-action is a detriment to his comic book history, just as ignoring Jean Grey's Phoenix connection or Beast's genius-level intelligence would be substantial errors.
Cyclops is usually the first mutant Professor X recruits for the X-Men.
The MCU’s X-Men Movies Don’t Need To Repeat Wolverine’s Mistake With Cyclops All Member Of The MCU's X-Men Can Be Protagonists Despite Cyclops' Leader Role Custom Image by Nicolas Ayala X-Men '97 and its predecessor, X-Men: The Animated Series, can serve as guides for the MCU's live-action X-Men movies, with Cyclops as a powerful team leader. However, the MCU's X-Men projects don't need to overcompensate by turning Cyclops into the new sole protagonist. As evidenced by the comics and the animated shows, all members of the X-Men have the same importance, and every one of them can be the main character in each episode or comic book issue. In order to improve on what Fox's X-Men movies established, the MCU must ensure that its X-Men titles are true ensemble stories.

On the other hand, given the interconnected nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's possible for each member of the X-Men to be the main character in each mutant-related MCU movie or show, with the rest of the team as supporting characters. Similarly to X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men '97's episodic format, this dynamic would give each MCU mutant a fair chance to shine. Of course, it would also help the MCU's version of the X-Men stand out over all previous movies.
