Miles Morales" Movie Story Will Continue Before Beyond The Spider-Verse... On YouTube?!

This article is part of a directory: What's Next For Miles Morales? Everything We Know About Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Summary
  • The YouTube short "The Spider Within" will make the wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse with a Miles-focused story.
  • More shorts could flesh out other Spider-Verse characters, test audience interest for possible spinoffs, and pave the way for new heroes in upcoming films.
  • The short is also a promising sign for Sony's future plans for the franchise, which includes a possible Spider-Women movie and the return of Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir in a live-action show.
While audiences eagerly await word on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's release date, Miles Morales' story will continue in a different format. The third installment in the animated webslinger franchise has endured some setbacks during its production and development, primarily due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike preventing the threequel's ensemble cast from doing any recording. Following the lifting of the strike, reports indicated that the cast were finally getting to work, though Sony has yet to add the movie back to their release slate.
Now, Variety has revealed that Miles' story is set to continue in a different way during the wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse with a YouTube short. Entitled "The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story", the animated short is set close to the events of Across the Spider-Verse and follows Miles as he struggles to "balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, student and Spider-Man." This ultimately results in a panic attack that manifests his anxieties around him, all while he tries to protect the city from an unspecified threat. The animated short hits YouTube on March 27 at 6 a.m. PST.
How Miles Morales' Spider-Verse Short Helps Set Up The Franchise's Future Close The Miles-focused short is not only an intriguing way to expand the character in between the two movies, but is also a promising sign for the Spider-Verse franchise's overall future. Since the first movie's release, there have been varying talks and reports about avenues Sony is exploring to expand the brand, which includes a Spider-Women-focused movie with Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen, Jessica Drew, introduced in Across the Spider-Verse and voiced by Issa Rae, and Cindy Moon/Silk, who has yet to appear. It was also recently reported that Nicolas Cage was in final talks to return for the live-action Spider-Man Noir show.
But more than indicating that the studio is keen to keep building the Spider-Verse franchise, Miles' short proves a promising path for Sony to determine how to best expand the universe. While Across the Spider-Verse finally offered some insight for Gwen's backstory, many of the other webslinging variants have yet to be given the same treatment in the mainline movies. The short format would be a good way for the creatives behind the franchise to properly flesh out each character rather than risk the movie feeling overstuffed.

As fun as a Spider-Ham-led project sounds to some audiences, the overall feasibility and chances at the same financial success as the first two movies would be impossible for the studio to determine without trying out a special short focused solely on him. Given Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is also expected to conclude the Miles-focused trilogy, future shorts could help set up other heroes to take the charge in future movies.
