Marvel"s Newest X-Men Return Comments Have Raised My Hopes The MCU Can Finally Get 1 Hero Right After 18 Years

The possible return of another Fox X-Men actor gives me hope that Marvel can finally get a popular mutant right after 18 years. The X-Men likely won"t make their MCU debut until after Avengers: Secret Wars. However, several mutants have already appeared in the MCU, including Deadpool, Wolverine, Professor X, and Gambit. After Deadpool & Wolverine"s incredible box office performance, the demand for X-Men characters in the MCU is at an all-time high, especially legacy mutants from the Fox universe.
One shocking return was Kelsey Grammer"s Beast, who had a brief cameo in The Marvels" post-credit scene. Grammer"s Beast from 2006"s X-Men: The Last Stand is one of the better adaptations from the Fox universe. Nicholas Hoult also delivered a solid portrayal of Hank McCoy in the prequel X-Men timeline, but there are still some lingering aspects of Beast that Marvel can perfect. Marvel"s recent X-Men adaptations have been exceptional, and they give me hope that Marvel can give audiences the best version of Beast yet.
Beast's MCU Return Could Finally Let Marvel Get The Character's Design Totally Right In Live-Action Kelsey Grammer says there's a chance Beast could return to the MCU Close Audiences were surprised to see Grammer"s MCU debut as Beast in The Marvels. He didn"t have much screen time, but his brief performance showed the Frasier actor could get back into character as if no time had passed. Beast"s return left me and other viewers wanting more, and there is a chance that this isn"t his last appearance. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Grammer said he can"t talk about returning to the MCU, but there have been "conversations."
"What I do know is that there was a huge sort of outburst when I showed up at the end of The Marvels, I guess it was. The response was really almost... it wasn"t unexpected. There"d be some response, but it was pretty overwhelming, and so there are some conversations."
One thing I was impressed by during his brief cameo is how much closer Beast felt to the comics and X-Men: The Animated Series. Not only did he look closer to the Beast from X-Men comics, but his lab coat and glasses were closer to an outfit that Beast would wear. It may have only been a brief glimpse at what Beast looks like in the MCU, but I believe Marvel could adapt Beast perfectly if he returns in another project.
How The MCU Can Make Its Next Beast Design A Perfect Adaptation Marvel can improve upon its first attempt at Beast Close The one thing Marvel cannot do is make Beast CGI. The CGI was average for The Marvels, but it already looks outdated and is slightly distracting upon rewatch. It would look even worse in longer scenes, especially if Beast is in an acrobatic action sequence. While there are flaws in Beast"s design in Fox"s X-Men films, the practical makeup allows more of his humanity to shine, while he looks too much like a cartoon when done in full CGI.
Related Recasting Beast For The MCU’s X-Men Movie Despite Kelsey Grammer’s Return: 10 Perfect Actors Even though Kelsey Grammar returned as Hank McCoy in The Marvels, it"s likely Beast will still be recast for the MCU"s official X-Men reboot.
However, Marvel got one detail right that the Fox films never did. Beast isn"t wearing a shirt under his labcoat, a common part of his outfit in the comics and the animated series. Beast is proud to be a mutant and doesn"t want to hide under clothing. In The Last Stand, Grammer"s Beast was always in a suit or an X-Men suit. Hoult"s portrayal was mostly in his human form, rather than his Beast form. Marvel should let more of Hank"s Beast side shine through, as the character is never shy or ashamed of his mutant appearance or abilities.
Marvel Should Keep Making Its X-Men Characters Comic-Book Accurate Marvel's X-Men are closer to what comic book readers know Close Deadpool & Wolverine is an excellent tribute to the Fox universe, but it also stuck closer to the comics than the Fox movies ever did. Hugh Jackman"s Wolverine is great as always, yet there was something so special about seeing him finally wear the yellow and blue spandex. Wolverine putting on his iconic cowl delivered the biggest pop from the audience during my screening, even louder than the cameo-filled sequence in the middle.
It was also great to see Channing Tatum as Gambit, a role he"s wanted to play for over a decade. His Gambit outfit was ripped straight from the comics, and it was amazing to see him wield his staff and charge up his playing cards. It"s impossible to know what Marvel"s X-Men will look like, but if Wolverine and Gambit are early examples, then I have plenty of faith in what"s to come. Hopefully, Marvel gives Beast the same treatment it gave to the others.
