Samuel L. Jackson has been a significant player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since his first appearance in Iron Man. He has played the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Nick Fury, a character on which the Ultimate comic book line based their appearance of the hero in 2001. While the hero had a major focus in some films and has received his own series in Secret Invasion, there are some projects where the character was absent where he might have fit in.
Recently, Jackson spoke with GQ, where he outlined two major MCU projects where he did not have the opportunity to appear. Nick Fury did not appear in Captain America: Civil War, or in Black Panther. Jackson expressed some disappointment in not getting to go to Wakanda, but it was Civil War that seemed more significant to his character.
Jackson seemed quite disappointed that he did not appear in these films during the interview. He said to GQ, reflecting on the events of Civil War, "The kids are fighting, and I"m not going to make them go to their rooms? How does that make sense?!" Fortunately, the actor has gone on to appear in other major films with Marvel, including a central role in The Marvels.

Despite being an unpowered authority figure, Fury"s organization, insight, knowledge, and authority have elevated him in the eyes of the Avengers. It is true that there is something fatherly in his presence with the team, and noting this makes some of his absences feel odd. It is, therefore, strange that the character did not appear, especially in Civil War, which saw an enormous rift emerge between the characters he presided over.
