WandaVision Recap: 10 Things To Know From Previous Marvel Movies & Shows Before Agatha All Along

Agatha All Along is set to open the Marvel Cinematic Universe"s magic corner in an exciting way, following up on storylines set up by previous movies and shows. Kathryn Hahn is coming back to the MCU for her first project as a lead. The actress made her debut in the franchise in one of the MCU"s best TV shows. Hahn"s Agatha Harkness turned out to be the villain of Disney+"s WandaVision.
The show put her head to head with Elizabeth Olsen"s Scarlet Witch. WandaVision was such a major success for Marvel that the series" story continues in multiple ways. The Scarlet Witch returned in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with Agatha"s story continuing in Agatha All Along and Paul Bettany"s White Vision confirmed to come back in Marvel"s planned Vision TV show. To fully enjoy Agatha All Along, it is necessary to understand how Agatha Harkness got where she is and the role the Scarlet Witch played in it.
10 Wanda Was Forced To Kill Vision In Avengers: Infinity War Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Close Avengers: Infinity War was a major stepping stone for the Scarlet Witch"s MCU story. Olsen"s character had more to do in the MCU movie than in Avengers: Endgame and the actress managed to deliver a heartbreaking and compelling performance. Wanda Maximoff is one of the Avengers" most powerful members, which means that when everything seemed lost, she was the one who had to make a major sacrifice play in order to stop Thanos.
In the end, it was all for nothing, as Thanos used the Time Stone to bring Vision back to life and get the Mind Stone for himself before killing him again.
As the Mad Titan would stop at nothing to get the Mind Stone lodged on Vision"s forehead and complete his Infinity Gauntlet, the Scarlet Witch was forced to kill the love of her life. Wanda held Thanos back with one hand as she destroyed the Mind Stone — and Vision — with the other. In the end, it was all for nothing, as Thanos used the Time Stone to bring Vision back to life and get the Mind Stone for himself before killing him again.
9 The Scarlet Witch Put Westview Under A Hex Due To Her Grief WandaVision (2021) Close After the two Avengers movies closed out the MCU"s Infinity Saga, Wanda Maximoff"s story continued in her first project as a lead character. Olsen soared in Disney+"s WandaVision, with the Scarlet Witch"s grief over the death of Vision and the traumatic experience she went through as she tried to kill him to save the universe, leading to a major event. Wanda Maximoff"s grief and powers got mixed and led to her casting a hex over the city of Westview.
Wanda went to Westview after seeing Vision"s dead body at SWORD"s headquarters. Vision had bought a plot of land in Westview for them to live together.
WandaVision would explore many different eras of TV, as the Scarlet Witch created a reality that was similar to the TV shows she watched as a kid and brought her comfort. Wanda did not intend to trap all the residents of Westview under her spell, but her grief and chaos magic were so powerful that once she let them out, the whole town was engulfed.
8 Wanda Sacrificed Vision And Her Kids To Save Westview’s Residents WandaVision (2021) Close When she created the Hex, Wanda also brought a version of Paul Bettany"s Vision into existence. Later in WandaVision, the two would have twin sons, Billy and Tommy. The kids aged faster than normal, going from babies to 10-year-olds throughout the series. Sadly, in order to save the city of Westview and break free from the cycle she was in, Wanda had to make yet another major sacrifice.
Joe Locke"s "Teen" is heavily rumored to be Billy Kaplan, one of Wanda and Vision"s reincarnated sons, in Agatha All Along.
In WandaVision"s series finale, the Scarlet Witch had to let go of Vision and her kids so that she could free Westview and its citizens from the Hex. Understandably, the residents of the town were mad at Wanda for her actions. The Hex pulled back, returning things to how they were, with Wanda having a final emotional goodbye with her kids and Vision before they were gone.
7 Wanda Maximoff Trapped Agatha Harkness In Westview & Left Her Powerless WandaVision (2021) Close Over time, WandaVision revealed that the true villain of the series was Kathryn Hahn"s Agatha Harkness. The character was called to Westview due to the powerful energy coming from it. She disguised herself as the "nosy neighbor" Agnes, getting close to Wanda and manipulating many events, such as making Evan Peters" Ralph Bohner pretend to be Quicksilver. Agatha"s true intention was to harvest the Scarlet Witch"s powerful chaos magic for herself.
At the end of the series, Hahn"s Agatha is defeated by Wanda, who fully embraces her legacy as the Scarlet Witch, complete with a new superhero costume. As punishment, Wanda stripped Agatha of her magic and left her trapped in Westview as her Agnes persona. Agatha All Along"s trailers have revealed that the MCU series starts on that note, following Agatha as she continues to be trapped by Wanda"s spell.
6 Wanda Went On A Multiverse-Wide Rampage Until Her Kids Made Her See The Light Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) Close After WandaVision"s ending made Wanda"s pain worse, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sent the character on the path to becoming a full-on villain. The movie followed a Darkhold-corrupted Wanda"s attempt to find her kids across the multiverse. One of her goals included taking the multiverse-hopping powers of the young America Chavez for herself, which would mean Wanda had to kill the character, something Doctor Strange would not let happen.
The Scarlet Witch went on a multiverse-wide rampage that led to a lot of blood being spilled as Wanda killed characters left and right. Following her path of destruction, which included Wanda killing Earth-838"s Illuminati, which featured heroes like Patrick Stewart"s Charles Xavier and John Krasinski"s Reed Richards, she found multiverse versions of her kids. After she realized that her corrupted state was scaring her kids, Wanda saw the error in her ways.
5 Scarlet Witch Destroyed All Darkholds Across The Multiverse Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) Close Agatha Harkness brought the Darkhold with her to Westview, hoping to use the book of dark magic to control Wanda"s Hex and remain undetected in Westview. After Agatha was defeated by the Scarlet Witch, Wanda took over the Darkhold, reading the book and being corrupted by it the more she used it in both WandaVision"s series finale and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Related Every Marvel Character Who Has Used The Darkhold In Live-Action, Ranked By Power The plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness heavily revolves around the Darkhold, but who among its MCU users is the most powerful?
The Darkhold is what allowed Wanda and other characters to dreamwalk — take control of multiverse variants of themselves — in the Doctor Strange sequel. After a sorcerer destroyed the Darkhold and died doing so at Kamar-Taj, Wanda went to Mount Wundagore, where the Darkhold had been transcribed into the walls. Upon realizing that she was scaring her kids and what she was doing was wrong, the Scarlet Witch used her powers to destroy all copies of the Darkhold in the multiverse.
4 The Scarlet Witch Died At Mount Wundagore Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) Close Understanding all the pain and death she had led to, Wanda Maximoff sacrificed herself to destroy all versions of the Darkhold and Mount Wundagore. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness never showed the Scarlet Witch"s dead body, though a flash of red energy emerged as Wanda exploded Mount Wundagore from within. The Scarlet Witch"s death would later be confirmed in-universe through the first Agatha All Along trailer.
Related I Agree With Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch Criticisms & Think There's A Perfect Way For The MCU To Fix It Elizabeth Olsen has made her issues with how the MCU handled the Scarlet Witch clear, and I agree with her & I think they could be fixed in a project.
4 Aubrey Plaza"s Rio Vidal, a mysterious witch with ties to Hahn"s Agatha Harkness, tells her, "That witch is gone, leaving you trapped in her distorted spell." Now that Wanda Maximoff"s death has been confirmed, it remains to be seen when and where the MCU will bring about her return. The Scarlet Witch is reportedly a possible character for the Vision series, and Agatha All Along could see Wanda"s MCU return before then.
3 Agatha Harkness Betrayed Her Coven And Killed Her Mother WandaVision (2021) Close Agatha Harkness has a very dark backstory. WandaVision revealed that the witch has been active at least since the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s. Back then, Agatha was part of a coven that included her mother, Evanora Harkness. However, the MCU villain betrayed her coven by stealing knowledge she was not supposed to have access to and practicing dark magic. That led to Agatha being put on trial by her own coven.
Instead of letting the other witches kill her or take her magic, Agatha uses her dark magic to turn things around. Despite being bound to a wooden pole, the witch overpowered the others, eventually killing Evanora, her own mother, and flying away. Interestingly, Evanora will appear again in Agatha All Along, likely in a flashback. Evanora could also appear at the end of the Witches" Road.
2 Agatha Harkness Tried To Steal The Scarlet Witch’s Powers WandaVision (2021) Close WandaVision cemented that Agatha Harkness had a reputation for trying to steal other witches" powers. The Salem flashbacks were visible proof of that, with Agatha stealing the powers from her coven and her own mother before going out on her own. In WandaVision, the villain also told Elizabeth Olsen"s Wanda Maximoff that she took away the magic from "the undeserving." Agatha Harkness fully intended to add Wanda to the list of characters who lost their powers to her, but the Scarlet Witch had other plans.
In the WandaVision series finale, Agatha"s plans finally became clear, with the dark witch and Wanda going all out in a magic fight in the skies above Westview. With the aid of runes in the Hex, the Scarlet Witch was able to overpower Agatha, who was scared for having unleashed the Scarlet Witch"s full might. Wanda later cast the spell that made Agatha believe she was her fake Agnes persona.
1 The Multiverse Variants Of Scarlet Witch’s Sons Stayed In Their Universe Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) Close Finally, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended with Wanda"s quest to be reunited with her kids incomplete. The multiverse versions of them that the Scarlet Witch found remained with their mother, Earth-838"s Wanda, by the end of the film. No versions of Billy and Tommy have made their way onto the main Earth-616 of the MCU. However, Agatha All Along could be where that changes.
Marvel has been remarkably tight-lipped about the real name of Joe Locke"s mysterious "Teen." After the character was stopped short of revealing his name by magic in one of the Agatha All Along"s trailers, it sure seems like that will be a major reveal towards the end of the show"s nine episodes. With the most likely scenario being that Teen is Wanda"s son, Billy Kaplan, Agatha All Along should have many secrets in store that connect to past MCU movies and shows.
Agatha All Along Agatha Harkness, after the events of "WandaVision," seeks to regain her magical powers. Joining forces with unexpected allies, including the son of an old adversary, she battles new mystical threats while uncovering hidden secrets in the magical realm.

*Availability in US WandaVision, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first TV show on Disney+, first aired in 2021. The series kicked off the MCU’s Phase 4 and brought back Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, and Paul Bettany as Vision. WandaVision strayed away from Marvel’s typical formula, this time formatting itself more like a classic sitcom as Wanda struggles to cope with the death of Vision.
