Warning! This episode contains SPOILERS for Agatha All Along episode 5
Agatha All Along episode 5 features an impressive collection of exciting Easter eggs and references, including a major first for the MCU. Featuring the coven"s third trial on the Witches" Road, this new test is all about Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and her dark past. To that end, this new episode features some pretty cool references and even an homage to a classic horror movie.
So far, Agatha Harkness" new coven has faced two trials in Agatha All Along, one designed for Jennifer Hale (Sasheer Zamata) and the other for Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn). Now, Agatha Harkness is forced to commune with the dead, all while the Salem Seven are closing in, having made their way to the Witches Road themselves. As such,
here are the biggest Easter eggs and reveals in Agatha All Along episode 5.
14 Animal Forms For The Salem Seven Classic Comics Powers Close Having been teased in earlier episodes,
the Salem Seven are initially shown as various animals on the Witches Road before transforming into witches clad all in black. This includes a fox, a crow, a snake, and more. To that end, the ability to shapeshift and transform into various creatures was an established power of the Salem Seven in the original Marvel Comics.
13 Hexenbesen The Witches' Broom Spell Close With the Salem Seven closing in on all sides,
Teen suggests a "hexenbesen" which is revealed to be a witches" broom spell, allowing the coven to temporarily fly above the Witches" Road. The term "hexenbesen" is an old German word for "witch"s broom", and it"s hilarious to see the coven resist the cliché practice and how it"s been "coopted by the holiday industrial complex" according to Patti LuPone"s Lilia. That said, there truly is a wonderfully haunting shot of the coven flying in front of a blood moon, bringing to mind classic media with witches like Disney"s Hocus Pocus.
12 Classic Witch Cackle Rio Lets Loose
Unfortunately, the broom flight only lasts for so long before the Witches" Road forces the coven to careen back down. While this results in plenty of screams,
Aubrey Plaza"s Rio gives a classic witches" cackle, truly enjoying the thrill as they all plummet to the ground. Clearly, Rio doesn"t seem to fear death (which is likely indicative of Rio"s heavily theorized true identity as Marvel"s Lady Death herself).
11 Summer Camp Horror Vibes Retainers and All Close Running into a cabin and their next trial before the Salem Seven can reach them, Agatha and her coven find themselves transformed once more, just as they have in previous episodes of Agatha All Along.
However, this time the vibes are full "summer camp horror movie". Not only are there plenty of scrunchies and headbands to go around, but Zamata"s Jennifer Kale is even wearing a retainer to fully complete the aesthetic.
10 Teen Evokes Billy Kaplan's Wiccan Red Shirt, Blue Headband Close The new clothes for Joe Locke"s "Teen" are particularly interesting and notable, just as they were when sequences from this episode were first featured in trailers for Agatha All Along.
Wearing a red shirt and a blue headband, the resemblance and color matching to Billy Kaplan"s Wiccan from Marvel Comics are easy to spot and were more than likely intentional. It also connects with young Billy Maximoff in WandaVision who wore similar colors and a headband for his Halloween costume. As such, it"s a pretty big blue that "Teen" is likely the reincarnated son of the Scarlet Witch.
9 Mrs. Hart A Decent Impression Close In Agatha All Along episode 5, the coven uses a Ouija board so Agatha can commune with the dead for the coven"s third trial.
However, Harkness initially pretends to be possessed by the ghost of the last Mrs. Hart in Agatha All Along episode 5. While the impression isn"t bad, it"s pretty disrespectful considering Mrs. Hart aka Sharon Davis only recently died earlier on the Road as seen in Agatha All Along episode 3.
8 "Death Is With Us" She Really Is...
Using the Ouija board for real,
the name "Death" appears before the coven and the command that Agatha must be punished. Interestingly enough, it"s more than likely that Death itself truly was with the coven, assuming the theories are correct and that Aubrey Plaza"s Rio Vidal really is Lady Death herself. There have certainly been enough clues and hints in the episodes of Agatha All Along thus far to suggest as much.
7 An MCU Exorcist Homage Agatha Gets Possessed Close Not long after using the Ouija board and the coven"s debate about whether Agatha should be punished or not, Harkness herself is possessed by a rogue spirit.
To that end, her possession looks incredibly like the possession seen in The Exorcist movies. The make-up is very similar, as is the way she moves and crawls around the cabin as she tries to kill her fellow witches.
6 Ghosts in the MCU Evanora Harkness Close
Eventually, it"s revealed that Agatha has been possessed by the ghost of her own mother, Evanora Harkness. As was seen in WandaVision"s flashback sequences, Agatha killed her mother and her fellow witches in her original coven, stealing all of their power for herself. Now, it"s revealed that Evanora"s ghost has unfinished business, wanting revenge on her daughter. Likewise, this also appears to be the very first appearance of ghosts in the MCU altogether.
5 “I Can Be Good” Same Quote From Agatha's WandaVision Flashback Close Not wanting her new coven to leave her with the ghost of her mother,
Agatha can be heard telling the witches that "she can be good" before Evanora possesses her once more. This is the same line Agatha used to convince her old con not to kill her before she killed them all and stole their power. As such, it"s a very dark point of symmetry between covens, especially seeing as how the episode ends with at least Alice"s death (if not more).
4 Nicholas Scratch From Beyond The Grave Close Teen realizes the spirit of Agatha"s deceased son is present in the cabin as well in Agatha All Along episode 5.
This confirms that the MCU"s Nicholas Scratch is indeed dead, rather than being an agent of Mephisto as was speculated in Agatha All Along episode 3. Furthermore, it also confirms that Teen himself isn"t Agatha"s son either, as was initially theorized.
3 “So Much Like Your Mother” Billy Maximoff Confirmed? Close Having drained Alice of her power when she tried to end her possession, Harkness shockingly kills the protection witch at the end of Agatha All Along episode 5 just like she killed her old coven and her mother. Teen in particular confronts Agatha at the episode"s end, telling her that if being a witch means killing people for their own agenda, then he doesn"t want to be one.
Agatha responds that he"s so much like his mother, teasing that Agatha has always known who he is, while further supporting the idea that Teen is indeed the son of the Scarlet Witch.
2 Teen's Crown Very Scarlet Witch/Wiccan Close In a major twist, Teen displays glowing blue magic of his own. Taking possession of both Lilia and Jennifer, Teen has Agatha thrown off the Witches" Road and into the mud before pushing the other two witches off the Road as well.
Furthermore, Agatha All Along episode 5 ends with Teen wearing his very own crown, one that very much resembles the tiara of the Scarlet Witch. As such, it certainly does seem as though Agatha All Along has finally confirmed that Teen is indeed Billy Kaplan"s Wiccan, the reincarnated son of the Scarlet Witch.
1 "You Should See Me In A Crown" - Billie Eilish A Perfect Mic Drop The final shot of Agatha All Along episode 5 is of Teen wearing his crown.
As such, the episode ends with an epic song for the credits, Billie Eilish"s "You Should See Me In A Crown". It truly is the perfect song considering the episode"s final reveal with Teen and his more than likely role as Wiccan, crown and all.
