How Powerful The MCU"s Thor Is Compared To The Comics

Thor"s powers in the MCU are surprisingly quite different compared to the Thor of Marvel Comics. Thor has one of the most expansive timelines in the MCU, boasting four solo movies in addition to his Avengers movie appearances. Throughout that time, Thor has been established as one of the most powerful Avengers in the MCU, and even one of the MCU"s most powerful characters in general. Whether this compares to his comic book counterpart, however, is another story.
Given Thor is one of the most prolific Avengers in the MCU, there is a lot more room to assess his powers than those of his fellow founding Avengers like Hulk. Moreover, boasting four solo movies means that Thor has had ample space to develop his powers as well as his overall character, making him one of the most fleshed-out characters in the entire MCU. While Marvel is generally comic-accurate when it comes to its movies, however, there are some notable differences between the MCU"s Thor and his comic-book counterpart.
Thor's Powers In Marvel Comics Explained Thor Owes Much To His Asgardian Physiology Close Thor is Marvel Comics" God of Thunder, and he boasts a power set suited to the lofty title. Though he is not the omnipotent kind of god - a status typically reserved for such celestial beings as Eternity and the One-Above-All - Thor is among Marvel Comics" most powerful characters who can hold his own against the likes of the Hulk and Galactus. Like many Marvel heroes, there are a litany of powers at his disposal with some being more synonymous with his character than others.
Superhuman Strength Thor is physically one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe, being shown to be on par with Hulk on multiple occasions. Although Asgardians all boast a measure of superhuman physiology, Thor is the strongest among all of them, boasting the secondary title of the Norse God of Strength. He is often touted as the strongest being in the Marvel Universe, overshadowed only by aforementioned cosmic entities with unlimited power at their disposal. Some of his greatest feats of strength include:
  • Destroying multiple mountains
  • Lifting and destroying multiple celestial bodies
  • Throwing enemies across the cosmos
  • Throwing Earth out of orbit with an arm wrestling competition with Hercules
  • Crushing a tank with his bare hands
Like other heroes with similar power sets, Thor"s superhuman strength allows him to pull off several other feats. This includes super-speed granted by his abnormally powerful legs. His immense strength also allows him to hurl his hammer, Mjölnir, great distances, which is tantamount to flight. The fact that his muscle tissue, skin, and bones are about three times more dense than an average human also contributes to his strength and durability.
Weather Manipulation As the God of Thunder, Thor boasts absolute control over thunder and lightning as well as other extreme weather effects like hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes and tidal waves. His lightning can seemingly manifest in any environment, regardless of the natural ability for clouds to form. Lightning bolts summoned by Thor have destroyed entire moons and knocked out power on a global scale while he has also been seen wreathing his hands in lightning when using his fists to fight.
Wielding Mjolnir Thor"s legendary hammer, Mjolnir, is capable of a litany of powers itself. Many of Mjolnir"s feats are tied to Thor"s strength, such as his ability to throw the hammer at the speed of light or hard enough to cleave through a planet. Mjolnir will also always return to Thor regardless of the circumstances, having returned to him from within a black hole and even another dimension. It is also capable of the following powers:
  • Shooting beams of energy (including the immortal-slaying "God Blast")
  • Absorbing and redirecting energy
  • Creating portals to the same or other dimensions
  • Dispelling magic
Related Every Marvel Character Who's Lifted Mjolnir In The MCU Mjolnir has had a long and checkered past in the MCU, and throughout its time, many Marvel characters have lifted it, including these six.
As is the case in the MCU, Mjolnir is also enchanted so that only the worthy can lift it. This enchantment is strong enough to preclude the likes of Maestro (evil Hulk) and Juggernaut from lifting the hammer. Thor has been seen to be able to lift the enchantment momentarily, however, simply by commanding it.
Thor Has Godlike Physiology Thor and Asgardians, as clarified in the MCU, aren"t technically immortal. They can, however, live for millennia through the consumption of the Golden Apples of Idunn. This godlike physiology also grants Thor a measure of invulnerability, particularly against diseases and toxins that would fell a mortal. Being a warrior among his people, Thor is also especially agile and boasts an immense level of stamina.
Thor Is Sometimes Near-Omnipotent Thor"s father, Odin, is the most powerful of the Asgardians thanks to his possession of the Odin-force, a seemingly infinite power with untold potential. Thor has inherited this power on occasion, dubbing it the Thor-force when in his possession. With it, he has teleported Asgard across the cosmos, contained a nuclear explosion, and broken Captain America"s shield.
How The MCU's Thor's Powers Compare To The Comics The MCU's Thor Is Lacking In One Clear Department Close Thor"s MCU arc has seen him embrace his role as the God of Thunder, divesting himself from his previous dependence on Mjolnir after Hela destroyed it in Thor: Ragnarok. Thor was the only Avenger capable of besting Thanos on his own, with Stormbreaker breaking through a direct beam from Thanos" Infinity Gauntlet to bury in his chest. Thor would later be the one to behead an admittedly weakened Thanos after he had already claimed victory. Nevertheless, the MCU"s Thor has yet to demonstrate his greatest feats of power in Marvel Comics.

While Thor has demonstrated a certain measure of similar abilities to his comic-book counterpart, there are some significant gulfs in the limits of his power. While Thor has been able to go toe-to-toe with Hulk, he has yet to be seen lifting a mountain or destroying a moon, for instance. Furthermore, there is plenty of scope for him to inherit even greater godlike powers in Thor 5.
MCU Thor vs Comics Thor Who Is More Powerful? The Odin-Force Is Immensely Powerful Close Comparing the Thors of Marvel Comics and the MCU is dependent on circumstances. In the recent Avengers: Twilight comic, for instance, Hulk easily bested Thor (and it wasn"t even close). Yet in the MCU, a Mjolnir-deprived Thor gained the upper hand against Hulk in the Contest of Champions, with Hulk only winning thanks to the Grandmaster"s intervention. Then again, Marvel Comics Thor has bested Hulk multiple times in the past. MCU Thor, meanwhile, has just obtained an exploitable weakness in the form of Love.
Thor"s power levels in Marvel Comics tend to fluctuate depending on the narrative requirements.
Still, due to the MCU"s Thor being deprived of the Thor-force, it would seem that the Thor of Marvel Comics is generally more powerful. Now that Thor"s brother, Loki, is arguably more powerful than he is as the being responsible for giving the multiverse life and maintaining it in a space outside of time, Thor 5 could explore making Thor the new All-father on a par with his late father. Unfortunately, without confirmation of a sequel to Thor: Love & Thunder, the limits of Thor"s powers are constrained to the evidence seen in his previous MCU outings.
Thor Associated with the mythical realm of Asgard, Thor is a Marvel Comics hero who channels the power of thunder to slay their foes. Though the name is chiefly tied to Thor Odinson, several other characters also take on the role of God of Thunder, including Odinson's love interest, Jane Foster. Odin is portrayed as a physically imposing hero with incredible strength and typically wields the dwarven forged hammer, Mjolnir.
