Joker 2’s Harley Quinn Pays Off A 15-Year-Old The Dark Knight Tease

Joker: Folie à Deux’s Harley Quinn will deliver on a Dark Knight trilogy tease after more than 15 years. As successful as Joker (2019) was, both critically and commercially, the Joker 2 announcement was surprising. Joker was a self-contained film, but now Arthur Fleck’s story will be revisited in a sequel that also features Harley Quinn.
Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. Not much has been revealed about Joker 2’s story, but the Todd Phillips sequel is expected to be as grounded as the first film. There have been several live-action Jokers, but Joker and Harley Quinn have only been in one live-action film together.
Joker 2 Brings The Realistic Harley Quinn That The Dark Knight Trilogy Didn’t Joker (2019) reinvented the Clown Prince of Crime in a very unique adaptation. Now, Joker: Folie à Deux is set to do something similar to Harley Quinn. Like every DC character, especially the ones associated with Batman, Harley Quinn thrives on different interpretations. However, when it comes to live-action adaptations, there have only been two Harley Quinn iterations before Gaga’s. Mia Sara briefly played Harley in the short-lived Birds of Prey TV show, while Margot Robbie currently plays Harley Quinn in the DCEU. Robbie’s Harley Quinn dove into the fantastical side of the character, and it even incorporated the vat of acid origin story.
Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn can be the realistic take on Harley that The Dark Knight’s Joker teased. The Dark Knight did not necessarily set up Harley Quinn. However, Heath Ledger’s Joker portrayal raised the question of what would a realistic Harley Quinn be like. Christopher Nolan preferred not to revisit the Joker in any form following Ledger’s death in 2008. Still, the concept of a “Christopher Nolan Harley Quinn” has inspired fan art and cosplays for years. Harley Quinn eventually made her cinematic debut in Suicide Squad (2016), set in a fantastical, more stylized world. Joker 2’s Harley could be the closest thing to a “Dark Knight trilogy Harley.”
Why Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Will Be Radically Different From Margot Robbie’s Having a new live-action Harley Quinn in a DC movie when Margot Robbie has just reprised her role in The Suicide Squad (2021) can be confusing for the general audiences. That said, Joker: Folie à Deux’s Harley is expected to be radically different from Margot Robbie’s. Whereas the DCEU brought the DC Comics universe to the screen with aliens and magic, Todd Phillips’ Joker distanced itself from the DC lore. Instead, Joker reimagined its titular character as part of a grounded universe in which there were no superheroes. Even Batman’s mythos was completely changed for the movie, as Bruce Wayne was far younger than the Joker.
