Summary
- Loki's involvement with the Kang variant makes him a key player in the developing Multiverse Saga, potentially leading to his return in the Avengers 5 & 6 films.
- Marvel Studios should capitalize on Loki's success by considering a third season of the show, as it has been a standout for the studio and one of the MCU's most popular characters.
- Loki's return could occur in Thor 5, providing closure for Thor's character and bringing the two brothers back together after an extended time apart.
Despite his fate in the
Loki season 2 finale, there are still plenty of ways that Loki could return to the MCU. The God of Mischief has been a beloved character in the MCU since the early days of Phase 1. Originally playing a more villainous role, Loki has since shifted into an anti-villain. The finale of Loki season 2 gave Loki one of his most important character arcs to date, yet it also seemingly marks the end of his time in the franchise.
In the Loki season 2 finale, the Loki becomes the living conduit of a multiversal life tree. Loki’s fate feels set in stone since he is now living an eternity of isolation at the End of Time, especially with how actor Tom Hiddleston has hinted that Loki season 2 is the conclusion of his MCU journey. However, if any character were to come back to the MCU after a seemingly final fate, it would be the God of Mischief. Loki has bounced back from death so many times that it wouldn’t be a surprise, and there are several logical ways for him to return.
RelatedWill Loki Return In The MCU?The Loki season 2 finale ends with Tom Hiddleston's character taking on a new role in the multiverse, but will he return to the MCU in the future? 10 Avengers 5 & 6 Offer A Great Explanation For A Loki Return These Films Are Concluding The Multiverse Saga
Now that Loki is physically holding the timelines together, he has essentially taken over the role of He Who Remains. Considering that Kang is the focal character of the developing Multiverse Saga, Loki’s involvement with the Kang variant actually now makes him a key player. To an extent,
the Multiverse Saga now revolves around Loki as the multiverses the Avengers will explore are basically under Loki’s control.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are set to be the concluding films of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Like the previous four films in the Avengers franchise, there are bound to be plenty of heroes crossing over from various films. A Hiddleston appearance as Loki would not be a surprise in the slightest, considering the possibilities of the multiverse combined with the star-studded nature of Avengers films. A Loki cameo would even make sense, as any talk of the multiverse now concerns him.
9 Loki Season 3 Would Be A Great Idea For The MCU Marvel Studios Should Capitalize on Loki’s Success
Loki is arguably one of the MCU’s most popular characters. Even though he has been a key part in several parts, he admittedly only became necessary because of the overwhelmingly positive audience reception. In fact, Loki’s death in Thor: The Dark World was supposed to be his exit from the franchise, but the decision was received poorly at test screenings. Loki likely wouldn’t have escaped death so many times without his popularity with the fans, and the existence of his solo series after his major Avengers: Infinity War death is proof of that.
Marvel Studios has been incredibly hit or miss with its Disney+ series. However, both
seasons 1 and 2 of Loki are standouts for the studio garnering some of the MCU’s biggest success in recent years. A third season of the show would be the obvious business decision for Marvel. Although they would have to be cautious in executing a third season so as not to make it seem forced, Loki’s return in the series would be a simple way for his character to return without having to jump through hoops in the film side of the franchise.
8 Thor 5 Could Be The Perfect Return For Loki A Fifth Film Can Conclude Thor’s MCU Journey Close Loki was first introduced in Thor, and a return for the character in Thor 5 would be the ultimate full-circle moment. The two brothers have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the MCU, but they have proven to care about each other. It was traumatic for Thor to witness Loki’s death at the hands of Thanos, and while that’s now in the past, seeing Loki for one final time may be the closure that Thor’s character needs.
While Thor 5 has not been confirmed, the film will likely happen, considering how Love & Thunder left off with Zeus wanting revenge. It’s also likely that the film will be the last for actor Chris Hemsworth in the MCU, considering his conditions on returning for another Thor film at all. Any project involving Thor would be a natural place to include Hiddleston’s Loki, and bringing the brothers back together after an extended time apart would be a fitting conclusion for both of the characters.
7 Doctor Strange Might Need Loki’s Help Doctor Strange Needs To Fix The Mess Of Multiverse Of Madness
While season 1 of Loki was the project that introduced the multiverse into the MCU, Doctor Strange has been one of the more greatly involved characters for better or for worse. His spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home caused a big disruption in the multiverse, and the events of Multiverse of Madness came at a huge price. The film ends with Clea recruiting Doctor Strange to help fix an incursion in her home, and Clea’s dimension is likely not the only one that needs fixing.
There’s likely plenty of damage in the MCU’s multiverse at the moment. Considering that Loki is essentially now at the center of it all, he would be a huge help to Doctor Strange in fixing this mess. Though no one outside of Loki knows about the God of Mischief’s current whereabouts, his position at the End of Time could allow him to connect with Strange. If Loki were to appear in a potential Doctor Strange 3, it could be because Strange and Clea knew to go to the End of Time as Loki and Sylvie did in Loki season 1.
6 One Of Loki’s Variants Can Take His Place In The MCU Loki Season 1 Introduced Several Variants Close Not only did season 1 of Loki introduce various multiversal topics, but it also showed off how variants worked. When Loki was pruned by Ravonna Renslayer, he was sent to the Void, where he came across various Loki variants. Classic Loki, Kid Loki, and President Loki were just some of the many Loki variants introduced, each offering their own characteristics while also echoing the core personality of a Loki.
Though Classic Loki sacrificed himself to Alioth and the rest of the Lokis’ exact whereabouts are unknown at the moment, it shows how many possibilities the MCU has with the concept of variants. Hiddleston’s version of Loki has already had a long run in the franchise, and though his variants aren’t the exact versions of the character that audiences know and love,
using one of his many variants as his MCU replacement is an easy solution for his absence.
5 Agatha Harkness Could Try And Reach Loki Loki Learned Sorcery From His Mother
Before Loki got involved with so many concepts larger than himself, he was a child raised by his adopted family. Considering that Odin didn’t pay much attention to him growing up, Loki has an especially close relationship with his mother, Frigga. An incredibly skilled sorcerer herself, Frigga taught Loki the basics of Asgardian magic on top of his innate Frost Giant magic. Since Loki’s first appearance, plenty of other forms of magic have been introduced in the MCU.
Agatha Harkness’ dark magic will be explored more in her upcoming solo series, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. While WandaVision showed a flashback to Agatha’s time as a witch in Salem, her solo series will definitely explore her history more. Not much is currently known about the premise of the show, but Agatha will have to work to get her powers back after being suppressed by Wanda at the end of WandaVision. With her coven of witches, Agatha might attempt to reach Loki in some way, as he’s a skilled sorcerer himself.
4 Loki Could Reunite With Mobius In Deadpool 3 Owen Wilson Is Confirmed To Make A Cameo
Many eyes will be on Deadpool 3, considering that it will be the MCU’s only film project released in 2024. It will also be the official introduction of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine into the main universe, alongside Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool. It will be a big moment for the X-Men in the MCU, but two Loki characters will also get a brief spotlight in the film.
Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Tara Strong’s Miss Minutes are confirmed to be making appearances in Deadpool 3. Though it’s unknown what role their characters will play exactly, it can be assumed that it will be a TVA-related plot. Even with Loki currently isolated at the End of Time, he will always have an association with the TVA, and Mobius could try and get ahold of Loki in one way or another.
3 An MCU Character Might Have A Flashback Involving Loki Loki Has Been Very Involved In The MCU’s History
Whenever a character dies or moves on from the MCU, the easiest way for the studio to get them back for a cameo is to feature a version of them from the past. This comes in the form of flashbacks most of the time, and flashbacks can simply just use past footage from previous projects. However, there is the occasional time when MCU actors have returned as past versions of themselves, which Hiddleston has already done as 2012 Loki in Avengers: Endgame.
If Hiddleston wanted to make a low-commitment cameo in the future MCU, the studio could simply feature him in another character's flashback or memories. There are plenty of people who this would make sense for, such as Mobius or Thor reminiscing on the good times. Some characters could also remember Loki as a villain, such as the MCU showing a memory of the Battle of New York once again.
2 Loki Can Play A Role Like The Watcher In The MCU The Watcher Is an Omnipresent Character Close The Watcher was first introduced as the narrator of What If…? season 1, but his role quickly became much more integral to the MCU. The character was first just an omnipresent observer of each multiverse, but soon, Ultron sensed his presence and attacked him. The Watcher had to eventually break his own rule of not interfering with the timelines to assemble the Guardians of the Multiverse.
Considering the spot that Loki is currently in,
he could play a similar omnipresent character to the Watcher going forward in the MCU. He is literally holding the timelines together and is essentially the protector of the multiverse. Just like He Who Remains had so much knowledge sitting at the End of Time, Loki will gain insight from watching the timelines. Making Loki a Watcher-like character would be an easy avenue for the studio to take if they wanted to include Loki in future MCU storylines.
1 Sylvie Won’t Give Up On Loki That Easily Sylvie Herself Is A Loki Variant
As a Loki variant herself, Sylvie has a lot of connection to Loki. Season 2 ended with Sylvie getting to live in the free multiverse that Loki sacrificed himself to achieve, but she was clearly still thinking about him along with Mobius. Sylvie and the friends Loki made at the TVA won’t forget Loki that quickly, and they probably won’t give up on him that easily, either. Knowing where he currently is, Sylvie could very possibly assemble a team to find an alternate ending to Loki’s fate.
Loki is such a beloved character in the MCU that no matter how many times he meets his end, he always finds a way back for the sake of MCU fans. While the God of Mischief’s fate seemed pretty much sealed in the season 2 finale of Loki, there is always a chance for Hiddleston’s Loki to return. Especially with how essential Loki now is to the Multiverse Saga, the MCU should capitalize on having a simple excuse to bring the character back after his
Loki fate.
