1 New Star Wars Movie Is Finally Delivering On The Biggest Promise Of Rian Johnson"s Trilogy

  • Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy promised to explore new characters and corners of the galaxy, offering a fresh perspective unburdened by nostalgia and lore.
  • The Star Wars universe has become heavily reliant on interconnected narratives, limiting the potential for bolder and fresher storytelling.
  • James Mangold's upcoming Star Wars film, Dawn of the Jedi, will delve into an entirely new era of the Star Wars timeline, allowing for an original story with new characters and lore. Johnson may still have the opportunity for a similar chance in the future.
One upcoming Star Wars movie will finally deliver what was promised when Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy was announced. Since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has had a tough time successfully producing another feature film. While the Disney+ corner of the Star Wars universe has grown at an unprecedented rate and found great success with shows like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor, the movie side of the franchise has been sorely lacking. While plenty of Star Wars features have been announced since 2019, most of those have since been shelved or pushed back indefinitely due to creative differences and other unforeseen circumstances.
One of the projects that has been delayed indefinitely is director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy. Even before Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, Lucasfilm announced that the director would helm an entire trilogy of new Star Wars films separate from the Skywalker saga. Though The Last Jedi proved divisive with audiences, it was an undeniable financial success and well-regarded by critics. And yet, Johnson’s trilogy is currently no longer in active development, reportedly due to his busy schedule – though, unlike other Star Wars movie projects, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has kept the door open for the trilogy to move forward. The main appeal of Johnson’s trilogy, however, could finally be utilized by another production entirely.
Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Promised Something Brand New For The Saga Per the original press release: "Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." One of the biggest criticisms that Star Wars has faced in recent years is that its productions have been too reliant on nostalgia and old characters, afraid to explore something entirely new. Despite telling a story that became an integral part of the Skywalker saga, it’s hard to deny that Johnson was willing to take narrative risks. That’s what made the prospect of a new movie trilogy with Johnson at the helm so exciting – perhaps audiences could finally discover an entirely original side of Star Wars, one unburdened by generational expectations.
