George Lucas's sequel trilogy plans involved, as expected, a later point in the timeline where Luke, Leia, and Han are older. Leia's storyline would feature her struggling to build a New Republic, which is not dissimilar to the struggling New Republic featured in Ahsoka. Luke, on the other hand, would be focused on rebuilding the Jedi Order with survivors of Order 66, which is vastly different from the canon sequel trilogy's handling of the character. But both Lucas's ideas and the real sequels involve a dark side presence, with Lucas' plans heavily featuring the deadly Twi'lek Darth Talon.

Darth Talon first appeared in Star Wars: Legacy #2, a series that followed Luke's descendant Cade Skywalker over 130 years after Return of the Jedi. The series is written by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema and is revered as one of the best series under the Star Wars name. Talon is part of a group called the One Sith, a hidden organization of Sith based in ancient Sith doctrine. She was an instantly popular character and featured on the cover of Legacy issue #1, despite not being in it. The first few issues of Legacy now fetch very high prices on the aftermarket.
Darth Talon was featured next to the line "The Future of Star Wars Begins Now!", with her set center page. She was especially eye-grabbing because of her somewhat dated scant wardrobe and Darth Maul-inspired full-body Sith tattoo markings. This, all on top of the iconicity of the Twi'lek species, made her a centerpiece of the now non-canon comic series. Legacy is part of the old Star Wars continuity dubbed Legends since the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm. Its sequel series even continued running up until the acquisition forced it to be canceled prematurely.

Information revealed years later would tell of Lucas's plan to scrap the previously canon Legacy series and put Talon in his sequel trilogy. He was apparently a big fan of her design, and intended for her to be a central character. Maybe because of their similar appearances, Lucas also planned for Talon to be an older Darth Maul's apprentice. Lucas wanted to use Maul as the main villain of his theoretical sequel trilogy, with the Sith Lord running the underworld. Talon then would've been his apprentice, and she was to be a thorn in the side of another main character, the son of Han and Leia Solo.
It's clear to see that the sequel trilogy deviated from Lucas's original plans for the movies in many ways, but it's not fair to say that they were ignored completely, as several concepts were absolutely carried over. Talon was intended to be the Darth Vader type role in the films, and that became Kylo Ren. There is also specific concept art of her being surrounded by a character simply called Uber, a concept that actually became Supreme Leader Snoke during pre-production of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

As Darth Maul's apprentice, Darth Talon would've been a source of a lot of the planned action in the unmade trilogy. Lucas would even go on to describe Talon as "the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her." Her role was present in Lucas's canon-altering sequel treatments, which were handed off to Disney after the acquisition. The idea of her character eventually morphed into Kylo Ren, though a dark side of Han and Leia created by JJ Abrams was also a Lucas idea. Even so, Talon as a potential villain for the sequels can be seen in early concept art in The Force Awakens's art book.
The featuring of Talon in the theoretical sequels means serious changes were always going to happen. Lucas did not always respect the Expanded Universe and could easily erase them from his universe while keeping what he liked. Darth Talon is an example of something that he visually liked, but by bringing her into a story 100 years before her original appearance, her Legacy appearance would not be canon. This was also the case for the fellow Twi'lek Aayla Secura, with her being pulled from the Republic comic series for an appearance in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, while Lucas' later The Clone Wars series retconned much of those comics.
