Summary
- The Illuminati's appearance in Doctor Strange 2 felt disappointing and lacked substance.
- The superhero teams of Earth-838 will likely seek revenge for the deaths caused by Wanda.
- Avengers: Secret Wars can incorporate the Illuminati massacre into its plot, providing continuity and a larger role for the group in the Multiverse Saga.
There is still plenty of time until the slated release of
Avengers: Secret Wars, but the MCU may have already set up one of the film’s major threats. The arrival of the Illuminati superhero counsel in the MCU timeline garnered huge excitement for Marvel fans, but the group’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cameo left much to be desired. After Doctor Strange meets the group on Earth-838, a dreamwalking Wanda Maximoff breaches their compound and attacks. Though the Illuminati are powerful, Wanda is able to kill them relatively easily.
The Illuminati’s cameo felt disappointing because the group felt weak and brainless. From Mister Fantastic revealing Black Bolt’s ability upfront to the swiftness with which Wanda finished them off, the Illuminati felt like a one-off appearance for Multiverse of Madness that was meant to provide some fan service. However, the MCU still has the chance to make up for the lackluster Illuminati cameo and pay off the group’s fate in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars confrontation.

Here's everything to know about the sixth Avengers movie. Doctor Strange 2's Illuminati Deaths Set Up Many Possible Enemies For Avengers 6
Doctor Strange 2 introduced five main members of Earth-838’s Illuminati: Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic, Captain Marvel, Captain Carter, and Professor X. Though the cameo was short, it was interesting to see Marvel heroes crossover and form one unit. With so much focus on the Illuminati as a group, some might forget that these heroes had to have risen to prominence in their own right first. The existence of the Illuminati on Earth-838 means that
groups like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Inhumans, and X-Men are all seemingly established.

Now that Wanda has killed off individuals from these superhero teams, the groups that lost a member likely won’t take her actions lightly. Wanda was confirmed dead by Marvel, so the MCU won't necessarily see her return, but it’d make sense that the superhero teams of Earth-838 would come after her or anyone she was on a team with to try and avenge their fallen members. This sets up plenty of future MCU conflict for Avengers 6 to capitalize on.
Avengers: Secret Wars Can Make Doctor Strange 2's Illuminati Massacre A Part Of Its Plot
Avengers: Secret Wars will be the culmination of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, presumably leading to some form of multiversal war. Marvel will have to pivot with Kang as the villain, either recasting or recalibrating from his story, so the
final villain of the Multiverse Saga is currently up in the air. This leaves room for the conflict of Avengers 6 to truly be between Marvel variants, and the angered superhero teams of Earth-838 would fit right in. Making Doctor Strange 2’s Illuminati massacre a part of the
Avengers: Secret Wars plot would give some continuity to what felt like an otherwise one-off cameo, allowing the group to play a bigger role in the overall Multiverse Saga landscape, and tying the MCU's releases closer together on a narrative level.
