Echo Season 2 Chances Get Hopeful Response From MCU Show Writer: "I Could Watch The Maya-Kingpin Show All Day"

Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Echo!
Summary
  • Amy Rardin, the co-Head Writer of Echo, is enthusiastic about further exploring the dynamic between Maya and Kingpin in a potential season 2.
  • Echo has received positive reviews and has become the most-watched series premiere on Disney+ and Hulu.
  • While it is unclear if Echo will receive a season 2 renewal, there is still potential for Alaqua Cox's character to grow within the MCU.
While one of the show's characters already has their future confirmed, Amy Rardin addresses the chances of an Echo season 2. The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe followed Alaqua Cox's titular antihero as she began cutting ties with Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin and starting a war with his empire to forge one of her own, while also reconnecting with her family in Oklahoma. Also starring Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs and Cody Lightning, Echo has gotten off to a strong start, scoring solid reviews from critics and becoming the most-watched series premiere on both Disney+ and Hulu.
In honor of the show's premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Amy Rardin to break down Echo. When asked about what she would like to explore if season 2 is greenlit by Marvel, the co-Head Writer shared her enthusiasm about the possibility of further exploring the new dynamic between Maya and Kingpin, feeling that the titular antihero "is not done with him." Check out what Rardin said below:
Oh, gosh. I feel like if we're lucky enough to have a season 2, I think I could watch the Maya-Kingpin show all day. I think that story? She's not done with him, and he's not done with her, so I think there are unlimited storytelling possibilities there. Oh, gosh. I feel like what's interesting about these two characters is that they both know each other so well. And I think that Maya's power over Fisk is that she knows that he loves her, and that's a lot of power, and she knows him probably better than a lot of people, and vice versa. And so, I think to have these two emotional chess players manipulate each other could be really interesting.
How Echo Season 2 Can Fit Into The MCU's Future Close While most of the recent MCU releases have served as building blocks in the ongoing Multiverse Saga, Echo found a much better groove by taking a step back and focusing on the development of its central character. Part of this is thanks to its standing under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which was first announced in November 2023 and intended to serve as character-driven stories over intended for larger MCU worldbuilding. The Phase 5 Wonder Man show, which recently resumed shooting following rumors of its cancellation, is expected to be the second release under this banner.
Given Marvel has only handed out season 2 renewals to a handful of MCU shows thus far with Loki, What If...?, I Am Groot and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, it is unclear whether Echo could be given the same treatment. Its premiere viewership record proves promising for it to do so, though should the numbers not hold in subsequent weeks, it might not be enough to warrant the renewal. But even without a direct follow-up, there is still plenty of room for Alaqua Cox's antihero to grow within the MCU.
Related 10 Biggest Unanswered Questions After Marvel's Echo Marvel Studios released all five episodes of the Alaqua Cox-led Echo on January 9, 2024, but left many burning MCU questions unanswered. Between Echo and the in-production Daredevil: Born Again, it's clear that Marvel are interested in building up the street-level storytelling from the comics. With the series premiere initially pitting Maya against Daredevil, it would be interesting to see if her subsequent turn on him results in a rematch between the two, or if they instead find themselves on the same team should Fisk return to his criminal ways. Given there is plenty of territory left to go with Maya, particularly after the acquisition of her new powers, one can hope that Rardin and fellow Head Writer Marion Dayre get the chance to continue exploring the character.
All episodes of Echo are now available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu!
