Mark My Words, Spider-Man 4"s Action Scenes Are Going To Be Some Of The Best In The MCU

Now that Spider-Man 4 has found a new director, I'm certain that it will have some of the best fight scenes in the entire MCU. It was recently announced that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton will be directing Spider-Man 4, marking a big change for the Tom Holland-led series after Jon Watts directed the previous three installments. Spider-Man 4 is well under way, but not a ton is known about where Peter Parker's next adventure might go.
Cretton taking over for the next Spider-Man movie leaves me wondering what is happening with Shang-Chi 2, but nevertheless makes me very excited about the future of Peter Parker following where his story left off at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. If Cretton could translate the fantastic fight scenes in Shang-Chi into Spider-Man 4, this could honestly be my favorite installment yet. Hopefully, we will begin to learn who Spider-Man will be squaring off against as soon as possible.
Spider-Man 4's Director Update Has Me Convinced Its Action Scenes Will Be Top Notch Close Personally, Shang-Chi has my favorite fight scenes in the entirety of the MCU. It delivered on the martial arts promise of its characters, with the bus scene feeling like something that would be featured in a Jackie Chan film like Police Story. Leaning into the wuxia-inspired action throughout helped set the film apart from typical MCU fare. Destin Daniel Cretton and the entire stunt team worked magic on Shang-Chi, and it would be great to translate some of that stunt work over to the upcoming fourth installment in the MCU Spider-Man series.
You should definitely watch the Police Story series if you loved Shang-Chi's fight scenes, as well as films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
One of the reasons that I am so excited about Cretton directing Spider-Man 4 is that I feel there haven't been many standout action scenes featuring Tom Holland's Spider-Man. With Shang-Chi under his belt, I'm confident that the director can excel at bringing Spider-Man up a notch when it comes to the action department, and if it truly is a street-level film, then it could be something spectacular. The possibilities are endless and his work on Shang-Chi shows that Cretton is up to the challenge.
Tom Holland's Dedication To Spider-Man's Physicality Will Also Elevate The MCU Movie Tom Holland is a very athletic actor, which allows him to perform more of his own stunts than what is usually common for other actors. Add to the fact that he can flip around similar to Spider-Man and the character comes to life in ways that a CGI stand-in or stunt double just can't sometimes. Holland has shown dedication to the character over the years, and he deserves to be in another film that truly shows off what he is capable of athletically. Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man 4 could be the perfect vehicle for him to do just that.
It would be nice to return to more grounded, tangible fight scenes in a Spider-Man movie with actual actors and stunt performers doing the action.
The MCU so far has featured Spider-Man in a lot of massive, CGI-filled battle scenes, which can be fine, but it would be nice to return to more grounded, tangible fight scenes in a Spider-Man movie. Something reminiscent of Spider-Man's final confrontation with Green Goblin in Raimi's original Spider-Man film, but with the added polish of Shang-Chi's hand-to-hand combat, could be the perfect direction for this new installment.
The MCU Needs Better Action Scenes & I'm Certain Spider-Man 4 Can Deliver Honestly, I think the MCU can sometimes struggle with fight scenes throughout the franchise. Yes, they can be a lot of fun, but other times they are borderline incoherent with a lot of actual stunt work replaced by an over-reliance on VFX spectacle. That's why films like Captain America: The Winter Solider or Shang-Chi stand out in terms of fight choreography, because of the inherent practically of a lot of their fight scenes. Of course, there is plenty of VFX in those films as well, but the feel of actual people doing stunts can't be understated.
Spider-Man 4 has the chance to bring a bit more grit to the fight scenes in the Tom Holland-led franchise, which has largely focused on massive spectacle over more intimate action scenes. His fights with Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home highlight the importance of hand-to-hand combat in Spider-Man fight scenes, adding an extra layer of tension to them. Add a bit more flashiness to the choreography like in Shang-Chi, and Spider-Man 4 can be something truly special with its action.

I'm extremely excited about Destin Daniel Cretton directing Spider-Man 4, after Jon Watts directed the first three movies in the series. A change of pace was much needed, and adding the director of Shang-Chi opens up the film to have some of the best action scenes the MCU has ever had. Sometimes the MCU can struggle in that department, but with Cretton at the helm, I'm very confident Spider-Man 4 could stand out when it comes to a lot of the fight scenes in ways that some of Holland's Spider-Man films have sometimes been lacking.
