Chris Evans' costume from
Fantastic Four was drastically updated in Deadpool & Wolverine, and I am still disappointed by it. By the time of Deadpool & Wolverine's ending, I had minimal complaints about the movie. More so than any Multiverse Saga film aside from Spider-Man: No Way Home, I thought Deadpool & Wolverine used the promise of variants and cameos most effectively. Not only were the cameos of Deadpool & Wolverine well-chosen from a purely exciting standpoint, but they also perfectly fit the themes of the film's story.
Perhaps the most surprised I was throughout the film was when Chris Evans was introduced. From the Deadpool & Wolverine Easter eggs to the Avengers to the ultimate reveal that Evans was back as Johnny Storm rather than Captain America, the cameo and how it was handled will live long in my memory. However, despite being overly exciting and stoking my excitement for the MCU's The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025, one aspect of Chris Evans' Johnny Storm return did disappoint me: his costume.
Deadpool & Wolverine Gave Johnny Storm An Updated Fantastic Four Costume Johnny Storm's Costume Was Notably Different From The 2005 Original While the costume in Deadpool & Wolverine for Johnny Storm still looks good, I was surprised to see how many changes it made to the original outfits from 2005's Fantastic Four. In Deadpool & Wolverine,
Johnny's costume is made from a material that is no longer the sleek blue of the original film, instead being more matte, a darker color, and textured. The black markings are also different, with more lines running down the arms, across his chest, and on either side of his midriff. The Fantastic Four logo is also centralized, marking a difference from the 2005 film and its sequel.
Most of these changes were likely made to give the suit a modernized update and differentiate it from what came before..,
Perhaps one of the biggest differences I noticed in Deadpool & Wolverine regarding Johnny's costume was the pants. Rather than be a unitard of spandex-like material, Evans was wearing dark blue combat pants. The reason for this was to sell the bait-and-switch that Evans had returned as Captain America. This is also why his forearms had red and white wrappings, another difference from the original Fantastic Four costumes. Overall, most of these changes were likely made to give the suit a modernized update and differentiate it from what came before.
The Fox Fantastic Four Costumes Were Great & Didn't Need To Be Changed 2005's Fantastic Four Costumes Were A Good Blend Of Classic & Original Close Again, it is worth noting that I mostly like how Johnny Storm looked in Deadpool & Wolverine. Regardless, this does not change the fact that Chris Evans' Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four looked excellent, as did the other team members, and had little need for updates. In the 2005 film, The Fantastic Four's outfits were all-in-one unitards. Johnny's suit was skin-tight and dark blue, offset with black chevrons, one on his midriff and two on either arm. The Fantastic Four logo is positioned to the left of his chest, and he wears black gloves and boots with a high black collar.

The design for this suit was perfect, mostly because it struck the right balance between classic Marvel Comics costumes and new updates. The MCU has often been criticized for modernizing suits too much, with unnecessary lines and additions, a criticism I am usually inclined to agree with. In Fantastic Four, however, the suits still gave the feel of old comic books, while the black chevrons and collar gave enough of a new flare to feel fresh while not being overbearing or overdesigned.
I'm Glad The MCU's Fantastic Four Costumes Are More Comics Accurate 2025's The Fantastic Four: First Steps Has Great Costumes From A Golden Age
Naturally, Evans' return in Deadpool & Wolverine drew comparisons not only to 2005's Fantastic Four, but the new 2025 movie from Marvel Studios. The first elements of marketing for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and its cast were shown at SDCC and D23 2024, both within a month of Deadpool & Wolverine's release date. At San Diego Comic-Con, early previsualization footage of the MCU's newest team was shown, as were some basic test shots of Reed Richards and his team members.
Filming for The Fantastic Four: First Steps began only a day after SDCC 2024, explaining the limited footage that was shown to attendees.
That said, this footage was shown for those only in attendance, meaning the biggest wide-release update came at D23 when The Fantastic Four's MCU costumes were revealed in a set video. The video showed the four cast members of the film on set, with Joseph Quinn - who plays Johnny Storm - wearing a classic Fantastic Four-inspired suit. The suit evokes the '60s setting of the film; a bright blue suit with white sleeves and a white turtleneck collar. The "4" is huge in the center of the chest, complete with white gloves and a belt.

1 More so than Evans' outfit in Deadpool & Wolverine and those from the 2005 movie, the suits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps feel like those from the Golden Age of Marvel Comics. More so than that, they perfectly fit the somewhat campy, pulpy vibe of the 1960s setting confirmed for the film. While the changes made to Evans' costume between Deadpool & Wolverine and
Fantastic Four both made sense and were disappointing to me, I am happy that Marvel is committing to a more classical look for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
