I Rewatched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 & It Beats Every Other Superhero Movie In 1 Way

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might not be the best Spider-Man movie, but I firmly believe it beats every other Marvel or DC superhero film in one key way. I am a huge fan of Andrew Garfield"s Spider-Man, with the actor being the most comic book-accurate version of the wall-crawler, being every bit as sarcastic and heroic as Spider-Man is known to be in the comics. That said, I don"t think The Amazing Spider-Man franchise features the best entries among all Spider-Man movies, with Tobey Maguire"s Spider-Man 2 and Tom Holland"s Spider-Man: No Way Home being the very best in live-action.
Related I Still Have Hope For Andrew Garfield's MCU Return In Spider-Man 4 Despite His Recent Comments Andrew Garfield has addressed whether he will be in Tom Holland"s Spider-Man 4, and after a major MCU update, I"m confident he could still appear.
1 Still, there is a lot to love in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, and despite its multiple issues, I think The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is better than most people believe. After having rewatched Garfield"s second Spider-Man movie, I"m convinced that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reaches a level that no other superhero movie has managed to match or surpass in one regard. The rewatch only made me want the canceled The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to be revived even more than before, as it could continue the franchise"s most beloved and defining aspect.
The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 Have The Best Romance In A Superhero Movie Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy's Chemistry Is Electrifying Close When rewatching The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it became clear to me that no other superhero movie presents a romance that is better than the one Andrew Garfield"s Peter Parker and Emma Stone"s Gwen Stacy have in the sequel and the first movie. The Amazing Spider-Man did a great job of establishing the foundation of that romance, with Peter telling Gwen that he is Spider-Man, the duo finding out ways to save New York together, and Peter"s promise to Gwen"s dad that he would no longer see her in order to keep her safe.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees Peter struggling to keep his promise to Captain Stacy while wanting to be with Gwen.
I loved what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did with that relationship, which was the film"s driving force and remained excellent even when other parts of the movie fell flat. Gwen Stacy had agency, and her actions mattered in her own right, not necessarily just in connection to Peter as in other superhero adaptations. The sequel deepens the bond shared by the duo, with Spider-Man even deciding to move to England with Gwen so that she can follow her dreams and they can be together. Peter and Gwen were together through everything, and then tragedy struck.
I Was Heartbroken By Gwen Stacy’s Death Gwen's Death Scene Is The Saddest In A Superhero Movie Close After two movies depicted the loving bond between the characters and made Emma Stone"s Gwen Stacy a charming, funny, determined, intelligent, and charismatic character to follow, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brought everything to a halt in the most tragic way possible. The movie featured a perfect adaptation of Gwen Stacy"s shocking death from Marvel Comics, and the sequence is purely heartbreaking. Even now, a full decade later, Gwen"s death is every bit as sad as it was when I first watched the movie, having the same impact when rewatching The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
I would argue that Gwen Stacy"s death is the saddest in any superhero movie. The sequence brings the romance between Garfield"s Peter Parker and Stone"s Gwen Stacy to an utterly tragic ending that packs an enormous emotional punch. I don"t believe any other romance in a live-action superhero movie has managed to get closer to the level of love, emotion, laughs, and sadness that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did. While I wanted to see the franchise continue after the movie, I was happy in a way about its cancellation, as a future without Gwen would not have been the same.
I Hope Emma Stone’s Gwen And Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Reunite Somehow Spider-Man: No Way Home Brought The Actor Back Close I was very glad to see Andrew Garfield return as his version of Peter Parker in the MCU"s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actor was as great in the role as he has always been, and the movie managed to bring back the emotional connection Peter and Gwen had, even if Stone did not return. Peter telling the other Spider-Men about losing Gwen was already pretty emotional, but the hero being able to save Zendaya"s MJ from falling to her death in a similar way was the cherry on top, finally allowing Garfield"s Spider-Man to find redemption for Gwen"s death.
There is so much potential for a new Spider-Man movie led by Garfield, and using the multiverse to bring him and a version of Stone"s Gwen Stacy would be a must.
Since he came back, fans have been asking for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Garfield to be revived. I would love to see that happen, with Marvel Studios helping Sony with the creative side of the film. There is so much potential for a new Spider-Man movie led by Garfield, and using the multiverse to bring him and a version of Stone"s Gwen Stacy would be a must. That could also happen in a future MCU movie or even the animated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. I think Peter and Gwen deserve a happy ending after The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
