I"m Even More Excited For Tom Holland"s Spider-Man 4 After The Marvel Movie"s Latest Update

My excitement has hit new highs following Marvel's latest announcement about Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4. While it has been apparent for some time that Holland would be returning for another movie in the MCU, Marvel and Sony have been frustratingly coy about confirming any Spider-Man 4 details. This has given rise to rampant speculation over how the fourth solo outing for the MCU's Peter Parker will pan out following the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Peter obtained absolute anonymity and began fighting crime in New York City with a homemade costume.
These circumstances have led many to suppose that Spider-Man 4 will be a street-level return to form for the iconic Marvel mascot. Yet, with under two years to go before Avengers: Doomsday, the context of the decidedly more cosmic Multiverse Saga is impossible to ignore. There are decent arguments to be made for both eventualities, especially given that Spider-Man's last outing saw him embrace the multiverse to the tune of $1.9 billion. Whatever the case, recent announcements have indicated that the tone, at least, will emulate the three previous installments - and I think this is great news.
I'm Psyched Spider-Man 4 Has The Same Writers As The MCU's Home Trilogy Chris McKenna And Erik Sommers Are Returning Close The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the writers for Spider-Man's "Home" trilogy, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, are returning to write Spider-Man 4. The writing duo met while working on American Dad and continued their partnership to pen each of the MCU's Spider-Man installments, in addition to Ant-Man and the Wasp. Outside the MCU, the two worked on The LEG Batman Movie and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Related Spider-Man: 3 Ways Each Movie In The MCU's Homecoming Trilogy Is The Best Spider-Man arguably has the MCU"s strongest solo movie trilogy. Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home each have their own strengths.
Suffice it to say, McKenna and Sommers boast some stellar credentials. Spider-Man's Home trilogy is not only the third-highest-grossing franchise within the MCU (behind the Black Panther and Avengers movies), but counts some of the best MCU movies and the best Spider-Man movies ever made in its repertoire. There is no denying that the writers are proven talents, and their return to the franchise is a positive sign, no matter how you spin it.
The mind-blowing success of Spider-Man: No Way Home will be an exceptionally tough act to follow, so placing responsibility at the feet of the very people partly to thank for that success makes all kinds of sense.
At the very least, it means that Spider-Man 4 will be tonally consistent with its predecessors. The mind-blowing success of Spider-Man: No Way Home will be an exceptionally tough act to follow, so placing responsibility at the feet of the very people partly to thank for that success makes all kinds of sense. Admittedly, this same logic would dictate that Jon Watts' departure from the franchise after directing three movies is bad news - and that may have been the case had he not been replaced by the best possible choice.
Why I Believe Destin Daniel Cretton Is The Perfect Director For Spider-Man 4 Destin Daniel Cretton Directed Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Close Alongside the announcement that Sommers and McKenna would be reprising their writing roles, it was revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton is on board to direct Spider-Man 4. Cretton previously directed and co-wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is presumed to also be directing its sequel, though precious little has been revealed about Shang-Chi 2. Cretton was also on board to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before it was changed to become Avengers: Doomsday with the Russo Brothers at the helm.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of the MCU's most promising new properties when it helped launch the Multiverse Saga three years ago. Despite its $430 million global box office making it the MCU's sixth-lowest-grossing movie, it remains one of its highest-rated as it ventured into fresh narrative territories while delivering some of the best action sequences the MCU has seen. Notably, it also straddled two distinct tones as the early street-level scenes in San Francisco and Macau were juxtaposed with an unabashedly mystical final sequence.
Despite the lack of updates, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu has recently promised that Shang-Chi 2 is "definitely happening."
Cretton's proven ability to bridge these tones in the space of a single movie may be necessary for Spider-Man 4 as it may begin in street-level New York before launching into a distinctly multiversal climax. Spider-Man also boasts incredible fight sequences that Cretton's involvement will likely elevate even further. Furthermore, the depth and likability of Spider-Man's character is one of the most important features to pull off - something which Cretton proved capable of nurturing after debuting a host of new fan-favorites in Shang-Chi.
In fact, complex characters and their struggles typify Cretton's directorial style. Just Mercy, starring Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stephenson, is a grounded adaptation of a true story that centers on the real struggles and injustices faced by underprivileged defendants in Alabama. Short Term 12, meanwhile, focuses on a group of residents in a home for troubled teenagers with a focus on their complex backstories and characterization. With Peter Parker now confronted by the tragic challenges and loneliness that have arisen from his newfound anonymity, Cretton's expertise is the perfect fit.
Spider-Man 4's Filming Start Means It Could Release Sooner Than I Expected It Could Immediately Precede Or Follow Avengers: Doomsday Custom image by Ollie Bradley There was a two-year gap between each installment of the Home trilogy. Given Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in 2021, it means Spider-Man 4 is already one year past the typical release schedule, which is why I and other Spider-fans have recently been so eager for updates. Given there hasn't been so much as a crumb of information since Spider-Man: No Way Home, I was under the impression that Spider-Man 4 might even debut after the Multiverse Saga comes to an end.
Rumors suggest that the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga will launch a soft reboot of the entire MCU.
Recent developments have helped assuage these concerns, however. According to THR, Spider-Man 4 will begin filming in early 2025, around the same time that Captain America: Brave New World is released. All the MCU's Spider-Man movies have been released in theaters just over one year after principal photography began. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home, which began principal photography at the height of the pandemic in October 2020, overcame significant hurdles to hit its scheduled release date of December 2021.
With that in mind, it is safest to assume that Spider-Man 4 will be released in 2026. Given filming will commence in early 2025, Spider-Man 4 could release on Sony's slate in the late winter or early spring - or later, in the summer. With Avengers: Doomsday slated for release on May 1, 2026, whether Spider-Man 4 falls before or after the movie will be pivotal in attempting to ascertain which narrative direction the movie will head in, as it will either precede or follow a possible Doom-inflicted multiversal calamity.
Mostly, I'm Relieved To Finally Get A Proper Spider-Man 4 Update Any News Is Good News Close Whether Spider-Man 4 is a street-level romp featuring fellow New York heroes like Daredevil, or another multiverse-focused spectacle dealing with the aftermath of Doctor Doom's MCU debut, I'm honestly just happy it's moving forward at all. With a tumultuous 2023, Sony's shaky handling of the Spider-Man IP, and the MCU's very public shake-up of future plans, news that Spider-Man 4 is going ahead is a huge relief. The confirmation of those involved behind the scenes is just the icing on the cake.
Now that I am pretty confident that Spider-Man 4 will be released in 2026, it will have been five years between it and Peter Parker's most recent appearance in the MCU. This is a bigger gap than what sat between the release dates for 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Suffice it to say, then, that enthusiasm for Peter Parker's return - even if it does end up being all three live-action versions of Spider-Man once more - will be at a fever pitch.

Not Yet Rated Spider-Man: Homecoming 4 is the first sequel to the MCU's Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland as the titular wall-crawler. After wiping his identity for the public's memory in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker continues his crime-fighting adventures without the aid of Iron Man technology or the support of his former allies.
