  • X-Men '97 continues the saga with a weighty season 1, leading to worldwide consequences and surprising twists.
Following a tease of Captain America showing up in X-Men '97, Marvel supervising producer Jake Castorena shares what that cameo may lead to this season. For long time viewers of X-Men: The Animated Series, the mythology went through one of its biggest events thanks to X-Men '97 season 1, episode 5. As Genosha was under attack by a Wild Sentinel, it led to the shocking death of various key characters from the original series.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Castorena, who works as the head director and supervising producer on X-Men '97, was asked about the introduction of other mutants and Marvel characters in X-Men '97 season 2, which is already confirmed to be on its way to Disney+. Without giving spoilers, Castorena stressed that there will be "some fan favorites," including ones who were and weren't on the original show, stating the following:
JAKE CASTORENA: Yes... [laughs] Unfortunately, I will leave it there because you need to get through season one first. But yes, an absolute yes, some personal favorite characters and some that may have been in the OG show and that we've seen before, maybe glimpses in some that we may not have seen animated before. But you will just have to stay tuned in to find out. But yes, I can confirm that there will be cameos and new characters and it will be good.

X-Men '97's Captain America Cameo Has The Perfect Explanation Marvel Does Something The MCU Has Ignored For More Than A Decade Screen Rant also asked Castorena about that Captain America tease in the X-Men '97 midseason trailer, and what this means for the larger Marvel universe at hand. While Castorena couldn't give away spoilers, the producer stressed the ending of X-Men '97 episode 5 may have a worldwide effect, which would naturally involve characters like Captain America. He stated that "you're gonna see cameos and while I will hesitate to confirm verbally who we will see, [I'll] let the footage speak for itself and let you ponder that how much you will but what I can say is, something that I spoke with earlier and a talking point that comes up with this episode in particular, are consequences."
As Castorena added that, "one of the biggest tonal things that we are introducing into the series into our characters, are real consequences," which suggests that someone like Captain America would naturally be able to fit into this X-Men '97 storyline, given how he serves as a political figure. With the events of Genosha being viewed as the "mutant 9/11 equivalent," Castorena also explained that "the act of something so shocking, something, that really can both bring people together and its core or divide them like they've never been before. That's what I would say is for fans to look forward to cameos or what characters may or may not come in."

In the end, the rest of X-Men '97 season 1 will feel a "physical weight," which explains how the rest of the world, including various Marvel characters, may get involved as the Genosha massacre will stir more divide, to say the least. With this being one of the largest tragedies to fall upon the X-Men, it will be intriguing to see who was actually behind this attack by the time the season comes to an end. But for now, the audience will have to wait and see what transpires in the final five episodes of X-Men '97 season 1.
