How Deadpool 3 Can Redeem A $57M Marvel Box Office Flop 19 Years After It Released

Summary
  • Elektra's return in Deadpool & Wolverine could redeem the low box office numbers and critical reception from the 2005 film.
  • Deadpool's history of addressing controversial Marvel movies suggests Elektra may be lovingly joked about in the upcoming MCU installment.
  • Elektra's reappearance in the MCU is well-timed with the focus on Daredevil, potentially giving the character a much-needed redemption.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to bring a range of Marvel heroes from the franchise's past into the MCU - and the prospective return of Jennifer Garner's Elektra can redeem the 2005 Elektra years later. Elektra is one of Marvel's historically less successful movies, having a worldwide box office of around $57 million on a budget of $43-65 million. This might have been triaged by positive critical reception, but this was also not to be the case, and ultimately remains consistent to this day, given Elektra has a critic core of 11% and an audience score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Deadpool & Wolverine's release growing ever closer, reports that Garner's Elektra is set to appear in the cast of the upcoming MCU movie have been prevalent, with The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reporting in July 2023 that Garner would be part of the installment, and US Copyright Filling for the movie appearing to show the character and actor in a high billing within the cast. While neither Garner or Marvel have officially confirmed these details, this iteration of Elektra appearing in the 2024 Marvel release could redeem the $57 million box office flop all these years after its debut.

Deadpool & Wolverine Can Redeem Marvel's Elektra Movie Almost Two Decades After Its Release An Elektra Appearance In Deadpool & Wolverine Can Continue A Deadpool Movie Trend Close Deadpool is no stranger to retroactively addressing the more controversial aspects of Marvel's movie history. Deadpool 2 memorably saw the hero go back to kill his divisive depiction in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and also make jabs at the similarly unpopular Green Lantern movie, as the DC superhero movie also starred Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. As such, it stands to reason that Deadpool & Wolverine could acknowledge the mixed reception Elektra saw as well.
Ultimately, there are two ways the movie could approach this, and either would actually have a positive overall effect on the perception of the film for modern audiences. Either Elektra is lovingly lambasted and thus the critical reception it received can now be seen to have paved the way to some jokes for 2024's MCU movie, or the film will take pains to show that Elektra as a character is interesting, even if the 2005 movie proved less interesting to audiences.
It's arguably possible Deadpool & Wolverine could do both at the same time, since this is certainly in line with the franchise's decisions to joke about characters and their history even as they simultaneously show just how engrossing these more ignored characters - like Colossus and Cable - can be. Indeed, with Deadpool's movie history having a remarkable trend of making less fondly remembered releases part of a more well-regarded series, a Deadpool 3 appearance for Jennifer Garner's Elektra may well be the best future possible for the character.
MCU's Elektra Return Has Perfect Timeline Timing Daredevil Is More In Media Focus Now Than Perhaps Ever Custom Image by Debanjana Chowdhury Had Garner's Elektra reappeared without the other Daredevil MCU returns being in play, then it could've proved more confusing for broad audiences to understand exactly who she is. This is especially true given the Elektra movie itself came out many years ago now, and wasn't exactly a box office hit when it did initially release in the first place.
However, in the wake of the Netflix Daredevil revival with Daredevil: Born Again - which has brought back the majority of the original cast and seems set to continue on from the plot of Daredevil season 3 - Elektra is a more topical character for movie and TV audiences than she perhaps has been years, as the Daredevil lore once again comes back into the spotlight. Elektra herself may also be an important part of Daredevil: Born Again's plot despite her apparent death in The Defenders ending, as Matt Murdock's reaction to her death does make up an important part of his show characterization.
Why Elektra Deserves An MCU Redemption A 2024 Elektra Appearance Acknowledges Marvel's Movie History & The Character's Potential The lackluster reaction to Elektra - and the original Daredevil movie itself - was a shame given the acting potential of both Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. With the Multiverse Saga serving as such a prime point to look back at Marvel's cinematic history, it makes sense that this will also go hand in hand with a reconfiguration of some of said past.
Much in the way that Deadpool & Wolverine seems set to provide a last look at Fox's X-Men universe that may change aspects of it forever, the MCU movie can hopefully also showcase Elektra in a way that highlights the coolest parts of the character and further proves her potential in the live-action format. This would not only provide a positive final note for Elektra some decades later, but also serve to show Marvel accepting its cinematic past for better and for worse, making its delves into prior releases all the more poignant.
Deadpool & Wolverine A sequel to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first film in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Ryan Reynolds is returning to play the character, alongside Hugh Jackman, reprising his Wolverine role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.
