Venom: The Last Dance Post-Credits Scenes Explained - Sony"s Spider-Man Universe Has Their Own Thanos

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance.
Six years after the first film premiered in theaters, Venom: The Last Dance serves as the ending of the Sony Marvel movie trilogy starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. Hardy, who has a Story By credit on the movie, teamed up with writer-director Kelly Marcel to deliver what might be the best Venom movie in the trilogy. The film offers a satisfying conclusion to Eddie and Venom"s story while additionally setting up a major villain for future Sony Spider-Man Universe movies.
As has become the norm in superhero movie franchises, Venom: The Last Dance includes post-credits scenes, specifically two: one at the mid-credits point and another at the very end of the credits. While the latter might, at first, seem like a throwaway tag, both credits scenes are important to the future of Sony"s Spider-Man Universe. Here, we break down what happens and what they mean for a potential Venom 4 and other Sony Marvel movies.
Quick Links What Happens In The Venom 3 Mid-Credits Scene The Venom 3 Mid-Credits Scene Sets Up Knull As Sony"s Major Villain The King In Black Meaning Explained When Will Knull Return? What Happens In The Venom 3 Post-Credits Scene The Venom 3 Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Venom"s Return The Cockroach"s Significance Explained Will Venom Return And, If So, When? What Happens In The Venom 3 Mid-Credits Scene Sony Is Setting Up Their Own Thanos-Level Villain Close The first post-credits scene returns viewers to Knull"s prison in the void, where he"s still trapped after the events of Venom: The Last Dance"s ending. In the credits scene, Knull appears to be talking to the citizens of Earth and, on a meta level, the audience themselves. Knull says, "Your champion has fallen," likely indicating Venom"s apparent death, before going on to say, "Your planet will be mine. The King in Black is awake, I will kill your world, everyone will burn, and you will watch."
The scene ends with a reveal of Knull"s face as he yells into the camera. It"s a terrifying performance given by Venom: Let There Be Carnage director and prolific mo-cap actor Andy Serkis.
The Venom 3 Mid-Credits Scene Sets Up Knull As Sony's Major Villain The Marvel Villain Was Created By Writer Donny Cates And Artist Ryan Stegman Close One criticism of Sony"s Spider-Man Universe has been a lack of cohesion between the movies released. While Tom Hardy"s Venom movies have largely been crowd-pleasers, the other films have been major box office bombs and critical duds. Morbius was savaged by critics in 2022, and failed to gain much traction with audiences besides becoming a meme. Earlier this year, Madame Web also failed to be a hit, despite it having the most overt references to Sony"s most popular character, Spider-Man himself, who hasn"t properly appeared in the franchise.
However, Sony introducing Knull, an Avengers-level threat of a villain, has the potential to finally unify the disparate corners of this Marvel universe. Because of Knull"s powers and comics history, he isn"t a villain that can or should be defeated in one movie, or by one superhero, even one as powerful as Spider-Man. This is a villain that will need multiple superheroes to defeat. So the question becomes, who exactly is in Sony"s version of the Avengers?
Sony may be setting up Knull as their franchise"s version of Thanos, but first they"ll need a team of heroes that"s worthy of facing such a powerful villain.
As far as we know, Spider-Man doesn"t exist in the Sony Marvel universe, though Madame Web did set up his appearance (if Sony decides to keep the movie canon). Morbius technically exists, but after his solo movie flopped, it"s unclear if Sony would want to bring back Jared Leto as the living vampire - same for the spider-heroes in Madame Web. With Venom dying at the end of The Last Dance, he doesn"t seem to be an option (though there are ways for him to return - more on that later).
That leaves Sony with Dr. Payne"s symbiote, Agony, as a possibility to replace Venom, and Kraven the Hunter, who is another hero set to be introduced to the franchise this year. Beyond them, Earth"s defenders are seemingly made up of superheroes from box office bombs, or new characters they"ll need to introduce in the coming years. Sony may be setting up Knull as their franchise"s version of Thanos, but first they"ll need a team of heroes that"s worthy of facing such a powerful villain. Unless there are plans to crossover with the MCU, though that remains to be seen.
The King In Black Meaning Explained Close In the Venom: The Last Dance mid-credits scene, Knull refers to himself as the King in Black. While this is, of course, a callback to him being a god of darkness, it"s also a direct reference to a major Marvel Comics crossover event that ran from 2020 to 2021. In that story, Knull and his symbiotes invade Earth, with members of the X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four needing to protect the planet alongside Eddie Brock, Venom, Spider-Man and other symbiotes.
The King in Black Marvel Comics event spanned numerous titles, including the main King in Black series, Spider-Woman, Daredevil and Fantastic Four.
Knull making reference to King in Black is a clear indication that Sony is planning to adapt this comics storyline. That said, how they"ll do it without the X-Men, Avengers or Fantastic Four remains to be seen. It"s possible Sony is playing the long game and is setting up Knull as a villain to become a major factor for the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. Or the studio may be keeping their movie event entirely separate.
When Will Knull Return? It"s unclear when Knull will return to the Sony Spider-Man Universe. As of now, only Kraven the Hunter has a release date, set to hit theaters in December. It"s possible Knull appears in some form, likely in a credits scene, but I wouldn"t put money on it. More likely, Sony has been keeping their plans for Knull close to the vest and will announce them after Kraven, once audiences have had a chance to see the villain"s introduction in Venom: The Last Dance. So, while we don"t know yet when Knull will return, hopefully it won"t be too long before we know more.
What Happens In The Venom 3 Post-Credits Scene A Character's Fate Is Confirmed And Another Is Teased Close In the second Venom: The Last Dance credits scene, audiences return to the decimated Area 51 location, where the unnamed bartender character played by Cristo Fernández emerges from the hole leading to Area 55 that was created during the battle with Knull"s Xenophage. He stumbles through the rubble, calling "Hello!?" and "Hola!?" as if looking for rescue, or any evidence of survivors.
Cristo Fernández plays the same bartender character in both the MCU and Venom universe, having appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home"s credits scene alongside Tom Hardy.
The camera then focuses on a cockroach, which is also still alive, and crawling toward a broken glass canister like the one Rex Strickland used to capture the small bit of Venom symbiote from the bar. Both the bartender and the cockroach"s appearance in the credits scene are proof that life survived the Xenophage"s attack on Area 55, while the glass canister could be a hint of another character"s return.
The Venom 3 Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Venom's Return The Symbiote Sacrificed Himself To Destroy The Codex In The Film's Climactic Moments Close By all accounts, Venom dies at the end of Venom: The Last Dance. He is doused with acid and blown up in an effort to finally destroy the seemingly indestructible Xenophages sent by Knull. His death is confirmed when Knull realizes the Codex is gone, which could only have happened if either Venom or Eddie died. Since Eddie survives, and he then wakes up in a hospital bed, the only conclusion is that Venom"s main symbiote form was killed.
However, the broken glass canister in the post-credits scene is a reminder that a bit of the Venom symbiote was left behind in the bar in Mexico and recovered by Strickland. That bit of symbiote isn"t seen again after he delivers it to Area 55, and it"s possible that it survived the Xenophage attack, which means Venom could possibly return. Of course, that raises the question of how Venom could destroy the Codex if he didn"t fully die, but it might be such a small bit of symbiote that it"s not enough to register. Or, it could be a Baby Groot situation, where it"s Venom"s spawn and not really Venom himself.
Related All Confirmed Symbiotes In Venom Movies Explained There"s a good number of alien symbiotes in the Venom movies beyond the one bonded to Tom Hardy"s Eddie Brock, and even more are coming in Venom 3.
1 It should also be noted that another, separate bit of Venom"s symbiote was left in the Mexican bar in the MCU. So, even if the sample collected by Strickland in Venom"s home universe was returned to the larger symbiote when it was captured in Las Vegas and brought back to Area 55, another bit of Venom remains out there in the multiverse. So long as bits of his symbiote are alive, there"s seemingly a way for Venom to return despite his death.
The Cockroach's Significance Explained The cockroach in the Venom: The Last Dance post-credits scene serves as a callback to Dr. Payne"s comment earlier in the film that the insect has been around for 280 million years and counting. However, it"s also thematically important when placed next to the canister that held a symbiote, even if it wasn"t Venom. Knull and the symbiotes have been around just as long, if not longer, than cockroaches, so the insect"s appearance in the credits scene seemingly implies symbiotes are just as hard to kill. This could be another indication that Venom will return in some form, hinting that he"s harder to kill than audiences might think.
Will Venom Return And, If So, When? Tom Hardy Has Said Venom 3 Is The End Close It"s difficult to say whether Venom will actually return after the events of Venom: The Last Dance. There are certain avenues through which Sony could revive the character if they wanted, but Tom Hardy has been adamant that this is the end of Eddie and Venom"s story. That said, the multiverse does exist, and we know a bit of Venom symbiote was left in the MCU, so it"s possible Hardy could play a different version of Eddie or that Marvel Studios could cast a different actor to play Eddie Brock in their universe.

It certainly seemed, based on the Spider-Man: No Way Home credits scene, that Marvel was setting up the fight between Venom and Spider-Man that fans have long-wanted to see. If it does come to pass in the MCU"s Spider-Man 4, audiences will no doubt be ecstatic, especially if the match-up features Tom Holland"s Peter Parker facing off against Tom Hardy"s Eddie Brock. Whether that happens, though, remains to be seen.
As of now, it"s unclear what Sony"s plans are for their Spider-Man Universe since the only other movie on their release slate is Kraven the Hunter. Like Knull, we don"t know yet what the studio has planned for Venom, Eddie Brock or Dr. Payne"s symbiote Agony. Hopefully, it isn"t too long before we know what"s next for this universe after Venom: The Last Dance set up Sony"s version of Thanos and concluded Venom"s story.
7/10 Venom: The Last Dance Not Yet Rated Adventure Sci-FiActionSuperhero Venom 3 is the third and final installment in Sony's symbiote trilogy starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. It follows the events of Let There Be Carnage, where the anti-hero fought serial killer Cletus Kasady, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Brock was briefly transported to the MCU through the multiverse.
