Who Is Cyclops & Jean Grey’s Child In X-Men ‘97?

Summary
  • A hint at Scott and Jean's baby's identity in X-Men '97 is his name Nathan, which matches up with Marvel Comics.
  • Nathan Summers in X-Men '97 could be either Cable or Nate Grey, given the similarities in their origin stories.
  • X-Men '97 may follow the comics' Madelyne Pryor storyline, and if the Jean who had Scott's baby is Madelyn in disguise, their baby is most likely Cable.
Marvel's X-Men '97 featured the birth of Jean Grey and Scott Summers' child, but which version of their son this is has yet to be seen. Though X-Men '97 is not connected to the MCU, there is still a lot of excitement surrounding its premiere. Part of this stems from the mystery surrounding who Jean Grey's baby could be. While elements of its first two episodes make it clear that X-Men '97 is changing the comics' story, it is still likely that Scott and Jean's son will be a character from the comics, but which one isnt' clear.
The biggest hint at Scott and Jean's baby's identity is his name. They call their son Nathan, which is the name given to both versions of their son in Marvel Comics. While it doesn't help pin down exactly which version this is, it at least seemingly confirms that this isn't a completely new character made up for the show. However, it seems as though fans will need to wait for X-Men '97 to answer their questions definitively.

Nathan Summers Could Be 2 X-Men Characters Two Of Cyclops And Jean's Children Use The Name Nathan Close Nathan Summers origin as presented in X-Men ‘97 seems to be a mash-up of two existing Marvel characters: Nathan Summers aka Cable, and Nate Grey. Both characters share similarities in their origin. They are both the genetic children of Cyclops and Jean Grey, though neither are their natural-born children. They are also both the results of a plot by Mister Sinister, though the methods of their births are pretty different.
Cable was born to Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey who was married to Scott for a while in Marvel Comics. Nate on the other hand was a baby created by Mister Sinister using the DNA of both Jean Grey and Scott Summers. Nate aged rapidly thanks to Mister Sinister’s technology, meaning he exists alongside his parents as an adult. Nate Grey is also more powerful than Cable, being considered an Omega-Level Mutant.

This means that the Jean who had Scott's baby is most likely Madelyn in disguise. This also means that their baby is most likely Cable, and not Nate Grey, though it is still too early to tell. That said, X-Men '97 has already made some significant changes to the Madelyne Pryor story. Still, the show seems to be setting up its own version of it.
In the comics, Pryor didn't initially know she was Jean's clone, and she never pretended to be Jean. This seems to have been changed in the show, at least, if the Jean who gave birth to Nathan is in fact the clone. If she is, that would mean Madelyne intentionally took Jean's place, and is likely working with Mister Sinister. This is a change from the comics, where Madelyne was an unwitting pawn in his game. While this change makes her more of a villain, it also gives her more agency in the story, which is a nice change.
The Summers Grey Family Tree Explained Jean Grey And Scott Summers' Family Tree Spans Across Multiple Realities In Marvel Comics Cyclops and Jean Grey have one of the most complicated family trees in Marvel Comics. To keep things from getting out of hand, it’s best just to focus on the characters who are also superheroes or supervillains and play a larger role in the comics universe. This means including Scott’s dad, Christopher Summers aka Corsair of the Starjammers, but not including his mom, Katherine.
Scott and Jean have had one natural child in Marvel Comics, but only in the alternate reality created in the “Days of Future Past” storyline. This is Rachel Summers, aka Askani. Rachel inherited her mother’s control of the Phoenix Force and used it to become a key player in the fight against Apocalypse in the future. She, Nate Grey, and Nathan Summers are the main three children of Cyclops and Jean Grey.
If cloned children count, Jean and Scott are also parents to Stryfe, a villainous clone of Cable. Cable would go on to give Jean and Scott two grandchildren. One is his biological son, Tyler Dayspring, who he has with Aliya Dayspring aka Jenscot. Cable also adopts Hope Summers, a mutant who can absorb powers similar to Rogue. While X-Men ‘97’s depiction of the Summers-Grey family might seem complicated, it is nothing compared to the comic book version.
