Genius Avengers 2012 Scene Secretly Foreshadowed Every Phase 2 Movie According To Stunning MCU Theory

Summary
  • The Avengers' Helicarrier scene subtly foreshadowed Phase 2 of the Infinity Saga by having the titular team quiz Nick Fury on SHIELD's Phase 2.
  • Captain America's insult to Tony sets up his character arc in Iron Man 3 that the suit does not make Tony a hero.
  • Fury's words to Thor hint at the expansion of the MCU's cosmic stories in Thor 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, while Fury's attempts to stop wars before they happen foreshadow Ultron.
An MCU theory claims that The Avengers includes one genius scene that subtly foreshadowed every single project in Phase 2 of the Infinity Saga. When watching the Marvel movies in order, The Avengers is the sixth in release order. The film culminated Phase 1 of the MCU, with the franchise currently in the midst of Phase 5 over 10 years on from when the Avengers first assembled.
Many hold Phase 1 in high regard as one of the best-ranked Phases in the entire MCU alongside its two successors. While Phases 4 and 5 have been more divisive than those of the Infinity Saga, some individual projects still rank among the MCU's best movies. Regardless, when looking in retrospect, it is hard to argue against the sheer quality of Phase 1. This becomes evermore clear when realizing how well the early MCU movies foreshadowed what was to come, with one genius theory claiming a single scene from 2012's The Avengers set up the entire following Phase.

The Avengers’ Helicarrier Scene Has Iron Man, Hulk, & Captain America Asking “What Is Phase 2?” The film had an in-universe reason for bringing up the mystery of Phase 2. The scene from The Avengers in question is the argument aboard the Helicarrier midway through the film. The Avengers and Nick Fury converge on Bruce Banner and Tony Stark's lab with the duo wondering what SHIELD's mysterious Phase 2 is. Earlier in the movie, Phase 2 is mentioned to Captain America who becomes curious himself, searching the Helicarrier for answers. As Tony and Bruce uncover what Phase 2 is by hacking SHIELD's system, Cap enters the room and reveals that Phase 2 refers to the usage of the Tesseract to create weapons.
With what is known about the MCU in 2024, the dubbing of SHIELD's program as "Phase 2" is certainly humorous. Not only does Phase 2 make sense within the story of The Avengers but it is also the collective name of the proceeding six films after the 2012 team-up project. What makes the use of the term Phase 2 even better is the question Tony asks - "What is Phase 2?" - to Nick Fury, with the ensuing argument in the film subtly answering this question by foreshadowing the MCU’s future projects.
Captain America’s Insult to Tony Sets Up His Iron Man 3 Arc Captain America's words seemingly inspired the arc of Tony's next MCU solo outing. Close The first film released as part of the MCU's Phase 2 was Iron Man 3 in 2013. This film was teased in The Avengers' Helicarrier argument scene, specifically by an insult Steve Rogers says to Tony. Throughout the film, it is made clear that Tony and Captain America do not see eye-to-eye. The former dislikes the latter for his endless righteousness as well as the jealousy stemming from Tony's father's fondness for Cap, while Steve hates Tony for his selfishness and seeming lack of desire to sacrifice anything for anyone else.
Interestingly, this line typifies Tony's entire character arc in Iron Man 3.
This lack of friendliness comes to a head in The Avengers' Helicarrier scene, especially concerning Tony and Cap. At one point, Cap says to Tony "Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?" Interestingly, this line typifies Tony's entire character arc in Iron Man 3. In the 2013 film, Tony learns that he makes the suits of Iron Man armor, not that the suits make him. Tony Stark's entire journey in the film is about realizing that he himself is Iron Man, with or without the armor as foreshadowed by Steve's insult in The Avengers.
Fury’s Words To Thor Foreshadow Thor 2 & Guardians Of The Galaxy The Avengers' Helicarrier scene sets up the expansion of the MCU's cosmos. Shortly before Tony and Captain America come to blows, the fledgling Avengers question Nick Fury on why he is using the Tesseract to create weapons of mass destruction. Fury replies "Because of him." while pointing to Thor. Thor is taken aback by this, stating that the Asgardians want nothing but peace with the people of Earth. Fury explains that the threat Thor's planet unwittingly brought to Earth via Loki's actions involving the Destroyer from 2011's Thor caused SHIELD to begin preparing for otherworldly threats.
This is summed up in one line when Fury says to Thor "But you're not the only people out there, are you? And you're not the only threat." Besides Thor, this is the first time - at least in release order - that the MCU hints at aliens and otherworldly beings being part of the franchise. Concerning which Phase 2 projects this teases, Fury's insistence sets up Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. Both films, more notably the latter, massively broadened the MCU's cosmic stories, proving that Fury was right about the galaxy being much bigger than first thought.
Black Widow & Hulk’s Argument Teases The Winter Soldier’s HYDRA Plot The basis of the MCU's 2014 spy-thriller was teased by Natasha Romanoff's knowledge of SHIELD. Close As the scene in The Avengers becomes noticeably more tense, there is a section in which the various characters talk over one another in a heated debate. During this part of the scene, an exchange between Black Widow and Hulk teases what is to come in Phase 2 with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Widow can be heard saying "Are you boys really that naive? SHIELD monitors potential threats." to which Banner replies "Captain America is on threat watch?" Widow then states "We all are."
This expertly ties to the true nature of SHIELD that is revealed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In the Phase 2 film, it is revealed that SHIELD has been a cover for the return of HYDRA. HYDRA wished to enact Project Insight in which three giant Helicarriers would carry out an organized strike against anyone who could be deemed as a threat to the organization, including Captain America and the other Avengers. This ties back to the words of Black Widow in 2012's The Avengers which teased that, eventually, SHIELD's threat list would become much more dangerous.
Fury’s Attempts At Stopping Intergalactic Wars Before They Start Foreshadow Ultron The axis of The Avengers' argument informs their next team-up adventure in the MCU. The next Phase 2 film after Captain America: The Winter Soldier was Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, the sequel to 2012's The Avengers. This film was even teased in The Avengers' Helicarrier scene thanks to the central crux of the argument taking place. Tensions begin to rise in the scene because of Fury's usage of the Tesseract, with the superspy hoping to ward off intergalactic wars before they start by bolstering Earth's firepower.
The core plot of the 2015 film involved Tony and Bruce creating the titular Ultron to do the same thing as SHIELD's Tesseract weaponry and prevent wars from occurring...
Just as with the previous hints toward Phase 2 properties found in the scene, this theme sets up what happens in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The core plot of the 2015 film involved Tony and Bruce creating the titular Ultron to do the same thing as SHIELD's Tesseract weaponry and prevent wars from occurring and protect the world with ease so that the Avengers could retire from the fight. This naturally goes wrong, as Ultron sees the best way to protect the Earth is to remove the root of its problems: humanity.
Thor’s Avengers Insult Sets Up Phase 2’s Final Film: Ant-Man The MCU's smallest hero is teased by Thor's harsh words to his soon-to-be comrades. The sixth and final movie of the MCU's Phase 2 was 2015's Ant-Man which introduced Scott Lang to the franchise. In the film, Scott Lang is introduced as a petty thief who gets another shot at life when he is hired to become Ant-Man and stop a villainous businessman from creating weaponry that could endanger the world in the name of protecting it. Interestingly, Darren Cross' intentions as Ant-Man's villain link to the aforementioned point of Fury and Tony preventing wars before they happen, something Cross looks to do with the Ant-Man/Yellowjacket technology.
However, one other line from The Avengers' Helicarrier scene also subtly teases Ant-Man's introduction to the MCU. At one point during the argument, Thor utters the line "You people are so petty, and tiny." The word tiny naturally draws comparisons to Ant-Man, a hero from Marvel Comics who can shrink to the size of an insect. Similarly, Scott Lang's reputation as a petty thief could also be used as a link to Thor's words. As such, Ant-Man becomes the sixth and final film of Phase 2 to be foreshadowed in one genius scene from 2012's The Avengers.
