Live-Action Miles Morales Is Great News For The MCU’s Secret Wars

Sony have teased the development of a live-action project focused on Miles Morales, a.k.a. Spider-Man, which could be great news for the MCU's upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. The highly-anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse finally hit theaters on June 2, 2023, and quickly surpassed the success of its 2018 predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse. While Sony's live-action projects in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, including Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius, have been met with mixed receptions, the studio is blazing ahead in their animated franchise, with 2024 set to see the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse - but that isn't the end for Miles Morales.
Shameik Moore voices Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse films, which have seen the young Spider-Man embark on an epic adventure across the multiverse. While the Spider-Verse trilogy will be coming to an end in 2024, several new projects are planned at Sony that could continue Miles' story, and potentially connect further to Marvel Studios' MCU. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse referenced the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but now, a new tease from Sony producer Amy Pascal suggests that the two franchises could be getting one step closer to converging. This could play perfectly into the storyline for the MCU's Avengers: Secret Wars at the end of the Multiverse Saga.
Sony Is Producing A Live-Action Miles Morales Spider-Man Film Speaking to Variety at the premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Amy Pascal - the producer who allowed Tom Holland's Spider-Man to exist in the MCU - teased the development of two projects stemming from, or linked to, Across the Spider-Verse. One of these projects is the animated spinoff film Spider Women, which is set to focus on Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, and Jess Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman. The other, however, is arguably more exciting, as Pascal suggested that a Sony are developing a live-action Miles Morales film, mentioning that "you'll see all of it... it's all happening."
It's important to note that a live-action Miles Morales film hasn't actually been officially confirmed yet, but Pascal's tease suggests that ideas are being thrown around at Sony, which means it may not be too long before the project is announced. The prospect of a live-action film featuring Miles Morales' Spider-Man is exciting for Marvel fans, many of whom have been calling for the character to debut in live-action for a number of years, particularly after Donald Glover portrayed Aaron Davis, Miles' uncle, in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Miles Morales' introduction to live-action could also help to set up one major MCU Phase 6 project.
Miles Morales Has A Huge Role In Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars Event Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced the development of Avengers: Secret Wars at SDCC 2022, assumed to be based on Marvel Comics' 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars crossover events. With Avengers: Secret Wars set to conclude the MCU's Multiverse Saga, the film is expected to take more inspiration from the latter storyline in Marvel Comics, which dealt directly with an incursion destroying the Marvel Universe. Incursions were introduced to the MCU in Phase 4's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and pose a major threat to the status quo of the MCU, but could pose the perfect opportunity for a live-action Miles Morales to enter Marvel Studios' franchise.
Miles Morales debuted in Marvel Comics as part of the Ultimate Marvel universe (Earth-1610), but the incursion and the creation of Battleworld in 2015's Secret Wars saw him fight alongside Earth-616's Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, against Doctor Doom. After helping the Molecule Man, and following Doctor Doom's eventual ousting from the throne and the recreation of the multiverse, Miles realizes that his universe has been combined with the main Marvel continuity, allowing him to work side-by-side with Peter Parker. With the potential for Miles Morales to debut in live-action prior to the 2027 release of Avengers: Secret Wars, it's possible this storyline could be adapted for the MCU.
Marvel Studios & Sony Could Combine Their Franchises After Avengers: Secret Wars Since the announcement of Avengers: Secret Wars' production at Marvel Studios, many have been wondering which franchises might be combined in the film to accurately adapt the storyline from Marvel Comics. The most likely option would be to combine the MCU with the Sony Spider-Man Universe, particularly since Marvel Studios and Sony appear to have a strong relationship following Spider-Man's integration into the MCU. Spider-Man: No Way Home already saw these franchises converge, as Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock, a.k.a. Venom, was one of the villains brought into the MCU by Doctor Strange's spell, so it's possible something similar could happen in the MCU's Phase 6.
The Sony Spider-Man Universe currently features Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius, though several projects are scheduled for release in 2024. This means that, by the time Avengers: Secret Wars releases in 2027, Sony could have a fully-fledged franchise of characters ready to take part in the epic crossover event. Whether the live-action Miles Morales project is released as part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe, or is in fact a separate entity altogether, is yet to be confirmed. Even so, Avengers: Secret Wars could see several Spider-Man villains featured in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, as well as Miles Morales himself, make their way to the MCU.
