As the core Avengers’ time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming to an end, one member has yet to get an actual replacement. During the early stages of the MCU, six Marvel heroes were key in building up the franchise. Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye made their debut as a team in 2012’s The Avengers movie. The original core Avengers became pillars of the MCU, guiding the next generation of heroes and leaving a lasting legacy even almost two decades after their introduction.
The MCU’s shift from the Infinity Saga to the Multiverse Saga sparked plenty of changes in the franchise, most noticeably the original Avengers taking a backseat. Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff’s deaths in Avengers: Endgame were a full-circle moment for their character development, and Steve Rogers’ decision to go back in time is the happy ending that he deserved. Bruce Banner, Clint Barton, and Thor are all still around in the MCU in some capacity, but it’s clear that they won’t have to shoulder the same responsibilities as they have previously.

Every Original Avenger Besides Thor Has An Active Replacement In The MCU Close Several characters from the new generation of MCU heroes have already been set up as active Avengers replacements thanks to their personal ties to the core team. The earliest replacement introduced was Sam Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He wasn’t primed as Steve’s exact replacement at the time, but Endgame fittingly passed the shield to him. Hawkeye also explored a friendship between Kate Bishop and Clint, with Clint acting as her mentor. Though Tony never interacted with Riri Williams on-screen, she has been teed up as the Iron Man replacement due to his influence on her.

Yelena Belova was introduced in Black Widow and with fans already knowing Natasha’s fate, it was assumed that Yelena would be the one to carry on her sister’s legacy. Hulk’s MCU replacements also come in the form of his family, with his cousin Jennifer Walters becoming known as She-Hulk. Hulk even has a second potential replacement, as the details about his son Skaar have yet to be truly explored. Only Thor doesn’t have a clear active replacement in the MCU at the moment, but there are three potential candidates who would make sense.
Thor Has Three Potential Replacements In The MCU

Thor has already started fighting alongside his adopted daughter, Love. With Love being so young, there is plenty of time for the MCU to develop her into a full-fledged hero. Hercules could also fill the void differently, as his current mission is to hunt down Thor. Depending on how Thor 5 goes, Hercules could come face-to-face with Thor and realize that he wants to work with him rather than against him. Even Jane Foster is an option as, despite her death, she has been revived in the comics before and knows Thor’s duties as a hero extremely well.
The MCU is gradually shifting away from the Infinity Saga and, as a result, the original six Avengers. Their stories in the franchise have all wrapped up in their own ways, with some making a full exit and others taking a backseat. As a result, the MCU has been setting up some clear replacements to take up the Avengers’ mantles. Only Thor has yet to get an obvious replacement, though it makes sense as Thor is still mostly active. When the day comes that Thor does exit the MCU, there are clear candidates on standby to take over his mantle.
